@Experiment Fantasy It can be used for both. Words can have different meanings, you know. Plus, in English, "American" is only really used for people living/who were born in the US. It doesn't usually refer to Latin Americans because we just call them Latinos. Plus America isn't one continent to us. It's two, North and South America.
For the people talking( in this comment section) about whether or not Japan is closer to California than Europe, it is both a yes and no answer. If we are talking about Mainland Europe, then yes Japan is closer to California by approximately 200 mi or approximately 322 km. However, if we are going by closest European country to California, it would be Greenland(we will exclude Canada from this equation), as they are approximately 2000 mi or approximately 3000 km closer to California.
