Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
In 1952, Czechoslovakia adopted a whole new family of small arms, including the vz.52 pistol, vz.52 rifle, and vz.52 light machine gun. The rifle and LMG were both chambered in the Czech 7.62x45mm cartridge, and both would be adapted to the Soviet standard 7.62x39mm a few years later, in 1957. Very shortly thereafter, the Czechs would also introduce a heavier universal machine gun version in 7.62x54mmR under the designation UK vz.59 (universal machine gun model 59).
The UK 59 was basically a scaled up sibling of the vz.52 and vz.52/57 machine guns, although it fed from a belt only, where its smaller predecessors had allowed either belt or magazine feed. It used a pivoting locking block system much like the Walther P38 and Beretta pistols, in conjunction with a long stroke gas piston much like that of the vz.26 light machine gun.
The weapon did not see much interest outside of Czechoslovakia, although it does remain in service in that region in the modernized 7.62x51mm iteration.
Thanks to Marstar for letting me examine and shoot their UK vz.59!

I shot the UK 59 several times during my year long service as conscript in Czech Army in 2003/4. Its catridge was really powerful, going through brick wall or 1 cm of steel like it was paper. The issue Ian spoke of ("to have either a little less cartridge or a little more gun") was well known and the solution was this: When getting prone, you smash down the front end of the gun hard enough to bury the sharp ends of bipod legs an inch into the ground. After shouldering the buttstock you move your whole body few inches forward, so the bipod is not standing vertical, but slightly inclining forward. Then the recoil is transfered to the ground. I vividly remeber my surprise after the first shooting, that UK59 recoil was even smaller than from my beloved vz58, although the cartridge was twice the size.

Doesnt it use the old mosin style warsaw pact cartridge? The same as PKMs? The Czechs have been lucky with their weapons, they had the best AK variant and the Bren 2 is probably my favourite modern assault rifle. It's well liked in the ukrainian international legion who were donated thousands of them. I also saw czech troops still using vz58s in afghanistan around 2010. Crazy.

I think one of the key points in this weapons specification was not giving the operators position away...flash hider, downward ejection...even the cocking can be done without reaching for a cocking handle. You could really keep you head down and stay concealed.

(EDIT: corrected mixed up belgian MGs) Fun fact: In AČR (czech military), UK 59 is technically still in service, but for several years it's been not recomended to use on foreign missions, where AČR actually prefers FM MINIMIs in 7.62x51. Not because MINIMIs are better (even if they undoubtedly are) or because the standard NATO ammo supply lines are well established and 7.62R would cause some logistic problems (it wouldn't really, from cold war era, the army has stocked enough ammo for whole war and then some), but simply because the way UK 59 ejects spent cartridges, which causes dust and sand in desert envirorments to fly off the ground and, if the gun is fired from bipod, get into the weapon's internal friction areas and cause malfunctions. It's actually the very same feature shared by all of its predecesors, including LK vz. 26 (and its better known offspring, the Bren), but apart from Bren, no other gun in this family was ever extensively used in envirorment dusty enough to actually cause any problem. I heard somewhere Bren gunners in north africa were suggested to use rugs or fabric under their guns to protect them from dust, but even if it was true, it would still be unacceptable solution for modern army.
@Cinn357
@Cinn357 6 лет назад
Pavel Tobiáš That is a terrible reason, if that is the reason. The FN MAG also ejects casings downward, and has no dust cover there.
@johnfish3672
@johnfish3672 6 лет назад
AČR doesn't use FN MAG. But I see people from combat units walking aroun with FN MINIMIs all the time. Unfortunately being a military university we're the last ones who get the new stuff, so we are still stuck with UK 59s. And since most of them are close to 50 years old they are not in the best condition. My biggest problem with it is that you can't carry it as a traditional rifle since it has no foregrip and the carry handle is a pain in the ass to use.
@Sseltraeh89

It is the most stable gun i have ever fired from the standing position using the vertical fore grip . The tripod for this Weapon is state of the art and the Weapon hangs under the tripod and is even more smooth than the mg 42 tripod is . With this Belt feed you must fire it differently understanding the pulse recoil it has and like a fire man would absorb the push back from his hose so you must do the same with this Weapon . One of the best Belt feeds i have ever fielded and i must say the most positive and reliable ones . You can adjust your rate of fire on the gas block as well .. I've shot one of these and it's quite the beast. It is possible to shoot it from the shoulder, at least for me, but it definitely grays out your line of sight when firing. It's not necessarily a huge problem as long as you line your sights up in between shots and only do relatively short bursts before it climbs too much. I get what Ian is saying in terms of the gun not having enough mass to mitigate the recoil but to be honest if it was much heavier it wouldn't be very feasible as a shoulder fired weapon. That definitely wasn't the intended use of the gun, but I presume the Czechs wanted to leave some of these options open when designing it, specifically the ability to hip-fire in close quarters. If you flip that carry handle over and rotate it downwards it acts as a grip for your left hand to stabilize it if you choose to fire from hip or shoulder, just like a BREN or ZB-30. I also shot an MG-34 and MG-42 and while it is physically possible to shoulder them I imagine that would be more than useless on a battlefield. They are really too heavy to be fired in any way other than prone or from a mount or if you absolutely had to from the hip, using the sling to stabilize it and the bipod as a grip. I think the Czechs were playing with the idea of the American SAW though they didn't get the handling quite right. This gun is too heavy to be used as a SAW and is still a weapon that should only be fired from the bipod, but since it's so much lighter than something like the 34 it suffers from accuracy and other recoil related issues. Basically, the worst of both worlds. Still a really nice collectors peace tho, especially if you get the proprietary sight for it.

I really hope that Ian gets his hands on a KGK machine gun, which is a Hungarian adaptation of the SGM Goryunov medium machine gun. The SGM is a stationary gun, spade grip only, it was meant to replace the aging Maxim M1910 water cooled heavy machinegun. The KGK, on the other hand, has a pistol grip, shoulder stock and an integral bipod. Compared to the PKM, is much heavier due to the milled receiver and longer barrel. It has the same rate of fire as the PKM, but it's probably much more controllable due to the heavier weight. The PKM has a similar barrel detachment method, which similar to the SGM, it's a locking wedge, but in the PKM, the barrel retaining wedge or piece, is easier to detach, it doesn't require tools. Dunno about the KGK, but the SGM requires pulling with an empty cartridge, or tapping it with a tool if it's sticky.

As dumb as this may sound (and someone else in the comments probably suggested this (I’m just to lazy to check for myself) I can see one short term solution to tackling the problem Ian brought up about the spent casings at the 3:51 mark is to attach a brass catching bag under the gun. The trade off would be increasing the weight of the gun when full and prevent the user from going prone depending on the size of the bag, but you could, potentially, bring back the casing to be refitted and have an easier time menuvorvng and using the vz.59 without the worry of burning oneself on a heated case lying next to them and shooting while mounted on a moving vehicle.

The simplicity of the push-through belt looks great, what, if any, are the downsides? Why isn't every modern LMG using such a system? Belt standardisation?

It is mostly belt standardization. There aren't significant enough practical problems with using a pull system belt, so most countries that adopted one continued to use them if they haven't changed caliber. For example, it's been useful to Ukraine. Modern PKM belts are the same as the old metal Maxim 1910 belts, so the Ukrainian military officially reactivated their Maxim stock for use at fortified emplacements at the Donbass front. Water cooled Maxims are great at defending stationary emplacements and they have the logistics to be able to use them.

So, I wonder how many pounds of skin that ejection port cover has claimed during the charging process...

Hey Ian! Just heard RU-vid is starting to ban gun focused channels and removing videos tutoring and giving overall weapons information. Is it true? Have you been informed of anything?

Jesus what grain were those 54r rounds?! They looked 2 inches long! I've never fired 54r but damn, .308 rounds must be seated deeper or something.
