Uki Uki Japanese Lesson 24 Usagi Holmes 1: A Study in Verbs
Welcome to Uki Uki NihonGO! + Culture.
Today, we are focusing on verb groups in Japanese.
Japanese present-tense affirmative, present negative, past affirmative, and past negative conjugate like this.
Polite Japanese: verb endings (ますmasu, ません masen, ました mashita, ませんでした masendeshita).
Casual Japanese: verb endings (Dictionary form, ない, た, なかった)
In this video, we’ll focus on the dictionary form of verbs because it’s the easiest to identify.
All Japanese verbs are categorized into three verb groups: Irregular verbs, るverbs, and うverbs.
1. Irregular verbs: There are only 2 irregular verbs in Japanese.
する: to do (very versatile when combined with an action noun)
くる: to come (a few variations)
2. るverbs can only have 2 patterns:
eる ending (e.g. たべる taberu、ねる neru、かける kakeru)
iる ending (e.g. みる miru、できる dekiru, おちる ochiru)
3. うverbs are the biggest verb group. This includes:
All non る-ending verbs (e.g. のむ nomu, かく kaku)
aる, uる, and oる ending verbs (e.g. ある aru, おくる okuru, つもる tsumoru)
*Some exceptions
*Those exceptions are tricky うverbs that “sound like” a るverb because of eる or iる endings.
Luckily, there aren’t too many of those exceptions, so just memorize them and remember that they are うverbs.
e.g. はしる hashiru, しる shiru, かえる kaeru, しゃべる shaberu, etc.
Knowing how to identify verb groups correctly will come in handy when you use any verb expressions.
Hope you enjoyed this video. :)

elmar guadez Yes, I absolutely agree that particles are confusing yet extremely important. Because of their complexity, they cannot be easily explained in a short video. Fortunately, there are many websites and books that are helpful. Here's a nice quick summary of many of those particles: www.tofugu.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/japanese-particles-cheatsheet1.pdf

@kazuekurahara7986
@kazuekurahara7986 9 лет назад
Ignis Fowl Thank you for your comment. The present and future tenses are the same in Japanese. So we really only have two tenses (past tense and present/future tense.) For the polite speech, the present/future tense is 〜masu (affirmative) and 〜masen (negative). The past tense is 〜mashita (affirmative) and 〜masendeshita (negative). e.g. ikimasu (I go/I will go), ikimasen (I don't go/I won't go), ikimashita (I went), ikimasendeshita (I didn't go).

こんにちわ くらはらせんせい、 My question is, in Japanese, can you have multiple verbs? For example, "I will come to watch the show", or the past tense, "I came to watch the show." You probably can, right? So how does this work? I hope you can help me understand. Or, maybe it is in a future video I have not seen yet? よろしくお願いします! ーバンヂコ マウコ。
@kazuekurahara7986
@kazuekurahara7986 7 лет назад
You'll need a grammar point that expresses a purpose: PlaceにPurposeにいきます or きます. You can replace the ます ending with the purpose particle に. So "I'll come to watch the show" is ショーを見にきます and the past tense is ショーを見にきました。
