Uki Uki Japanese Lesson 30 - Usagi Holmes 2: A Curious Case of Adjectives
www.japansociety.org/
Today, we are focusing on Adjectives in Japanese.
Basic Fact 1:
Japanese adjectives are largely categorized into 2 groups. They are called い adjectives that end with い, and な adjectives that end with な. There are a lot more い adjectives than な adjectives in Japanese.
Basic Fact 2:
い adjectives and な adjectives follow completely separate rules. So it’s important to know which group your adjective belongs to, so you can conjugate it correctly.
Present Tense:
い adjective: It is hot - あついです. (simply add です)
な adjective: It is convenient - べんりです. (drop な and addです)
Negative:
い adjective: It is not hot - あつくないです. (focus on く!)
な adjective: It is not convenient - ひまじゃないです. (focus on じゃ!)
Past Tense:
い adjective: It was hot - あつかったです. (note かった!)
な adjective: It was convenient - べんりでした. (drop な and add でした!)
Past Negative:
い adjective: It was not hot - あつくなかったです. (focus on く!)
な adjective: It was not convenient - ひまじゃなかったです. (focus on じゃ!)
Note:
Some な adjectives, after you drop the な, look like an い adjective.
きれい(な)
ていねい(な)
きらい(な)
しんぱい(な)
Note 2:
Some English adjectives have been incorporated into Japanese, as な adjectives.
ホットな
シャイな
ハンサムな
セクシーな
Note 3:
You can add adverbs to go along with adjectives to express varying degrees.
すごく extremely, totally
とても very
ちょっと a little bit
あまり (+ negative ending) not very…
ぜんぜん (+ negative ending) not at all…
Hope you enjoyed this video. :)

An interesting point that I noticed. Na adjectives in past tense use deshita, where as I adjectives in past tense use desu.

Thank you I manage to understand it but it was a bit hard since I didn't know what you were doing with the words since it's not mentioned. You just changed them and expected people to assume it.

I-Adjectives are kind of verbs. Na-Adjectives are more like nouns. The rules do not help to use them instinctively unless a clear grasp of the word nature, ie root, form, tense, negatives, affirmatives and, the particles to use in the situations. The difficult in using Ajectives is second to verbs!

Thank you for the nice examples. But I thought I-adjectives don't need the "desu" part, unless you want politeness.

I don't understand anything. I had to watch it several times because she doesn't explicitly says you must remove the na when adding the desu. She probably assumed people would notice because it is her native language.

I want to ask something, I learned that to make a な adjective negative, we only need to change です into ではありません while on this video we were taught to put じゃない after an adjective we want to make negative. Are these rules interchangeable?
@kazuekurahara7986
@kazuekurahara7986 8 лет назад
Yes, ではありません and じゃないです are interchangeable with a な-adjective negative.

7.08 Why is ga used? why not no particle?
@EmeraldZoneNetGMG
@EmeraldZoneNetGMG 6 лет назад
'no' makes it possessive. 'ga' is the topic marker and implies the listener doesn't know the proceeding info (i.e. that the jacket is black). If 'no' was used the sentence would say, "Jacket's black..." as in; there is missing information about the jacket's black (it does not make sense as-is). Does that make sense?
