Ukraine won independence from the Soviet Union - Russia in 1991. This is a short segment from the English language video Ukraine - Third Journey to Independence which was in limited circulation in 1992. The entire video is worth seeing but this clip explains one of the reasons and events in Kyiv, to an English speaking audience, why the Ukrainians will not go back to the days prior to 1991.

The entire movie is on this channel also which is worth seeing. Lots more rare Ukrainian material here. The channel is nonprofit sharing our archival films which would otherwise be lost.

It from USSR, not from ruzzia

Yes. Independence from Soviet Union (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, USSR with Mikhail Gorbachev as President), not from Russia (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Russian SFSR/RSFSR; then Russian Federation with Boris Yeltsin as President). Ukraine (Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Ukrainian SSR) and Russia (Russian SFSR) at this context (1991) and 13 Soviet Socialist Republic other were equal in Soviet Union.

4:55 and there we see the Russian mindset... the preceding feeling that led to the current invasion. If the Russians want to talk borders, it seems quite a few people in the Kuban and Lower Don speak Russian with a strong Ukrainian accent... food for thought.

I wish I could tell them to keep their nukes.

Giving up nukes was a precondition for the US to recognise Ukraine's independence. It's unfortunate that along that Ukraine was not invited to join NATO. The bitter truth is though that the majority of Ukrainians at the time would not support joining the alliance.

потеряло почти всё производство, кроме добывающего, как и россия. эти страны ничего не приобрели от развала союза, но многое потеряли. хотя я согласен, что союз был вовсе не раем, можно было устроить его гораздо лучше.
