1) These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
2) These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
3) All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
4) Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
5) Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
6) Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
7) Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
8) All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
9) Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Since Russia annexed the Ukraine areas all use of military aid in these regions is use within Russia according to Russia. Conclusion: According to Russia there is no difference of using a missile on Moscow or Luhansk. Therefore why do we make a difference or think there is a difference?

Unfortunately this war has floated to the surface all the shit about europe and US. US is not reliable in helping its allies unless they fight banana republics. If they are attacked by a decently strong army power like Russia(and I am being generous) then they cower behind self imposed redlines. The Europeans have lived 80 years in peace and gotten idiotically weak behind their brunches and lattes. Russians are not like us, they are wired differently. The more you allow them to impose rules the more they will attack you. We need to fucking get our shit together for fuck's sake. Its enough! Two years of this bullshit behavior is really infuriating. People die. Its not Afghanistan. Ukraine is Europe and we need to defend them with everything we have!

Ukraine must buy the missiles, because whenever Russia uses missiles purchased from the belt and now they say they bought it from India, then the missiles purchased by Ukraine can be used in Russia. This is a war in which the aggressor attacks the territory of others but the self cannot be attacked.

Morning all. The reason that "shoot and scoot" is not baked into modern US military doctrine is that American always controls the skies wherever we go. Enemy long-range fires are suppressed by air power long before our troops go in. If you read some early accounts of former US soldiers fighting in the international legion, they would ask their Ukranian officers, why are they getting constant russian artillery strikes and why they just did not call in an air strike. Ukranian officers would just smile and say because we don't really have an air force. I heard a rumor that the coming US aid package will include F-16's directly from the US. I hope it's correct!

It’s not up to me of course, I say no negotiation. Russia gets out of all of Ukraine pre-2014. There’s nothing to negotiate otherwise except them getting out and stopping hostilities and taking on the cost of rebuilding Ukraine.

Shoot and scoot was a answer to anti battery artillery and still is, the problem now is they have to run the gauntlet of the the drones. However if the oppositions anti battery artillery is bad at aiming or unable to target the artillery then there's no need to move.

A Slinger is around $ 1,000,000 and can be mounted on almost anything . They never get a mention anywhere but AFAIK Ukraine has ordered 200 & Poland has ordered another 200 so I assume they work . Hopefully EOS will be able to get enough finance to build a new factory so they can produce at least 1,000 / year . Naturally the Australian government will not offer 1¢ of support to enable expansion unless a foreign company buys the company and no Australian banks will ever finance any manufacturing as they only finance land deals or stock market raids .

Its funny when armchair generals fight... like an army adapts according to terrain. Ukraine terrain is bad for everything except for air power, like they have tiny strips of cover here and there. If you have a mobile artillery driving in a forest I would say it has a bigger chance of it surviving if it moves after shooting because no camo will hide you after shooting 1 time and you only rely on luck of no one spotting you from the air. So even if its stpd to move its stpd to stay in place also thus saying one is better than the other is neglecting the terrain and how it affects a war. There will always be a counter to every weapon after a while, like bunker busters when people figured out hiding under concrete made em safe. Still people fight about wheeled or tracked, mobile or stationary... Like it depends on the terrain ffs but mobile will always be better in the end because when the enemy knows your location they will with a 100% chance hit you same with a normal soldier, you can sit forever in the same spot because sooner or later the enemy will fin a way to take you out and that is why they train you to move around a bit to be unpredictable even if the human eye sees movement better than stationary objects. Yes you might not wanna move around like a crazy headless chicken all the time but after that you open fire you are more likely to survive if you have mobility in the long run else the best soldiers in the army would be those without legs. So please stop saying stationary woud be superior to mobile and instead start talking about when to sit still and when to move. My point is that mobile will always be superior to stationary in the long run but it doesn't make a mobile target into a bulletdodging superhero that can't be targetted it only gives the mobile one the ability to change position after fireing thus avoiding counter fire. Also the stationary artillery has to get to that location at some point so its also "mobile". Once more, its not the stationary that are better its the users that doesn't adapt to the battlefield. Like if stationary would be so great then why did we even invent flying things when building a high tower would be superior!

Hi JP Gabions are wire cages filled with stones. I believe NATO use things called HESCO for a similar function. You will have no doubt seen these being used to create walls around our bases in Afghanistan.

This Kharkov offensive feels similar to the bulge offensive in the WW2, not a lot left in reserve, one last big push to try and gain a position to make a difference. Let’s hope they can beheld and then next year reserve and win the war.

Excellent point re North Korean and Iranian weapons. I do think that the Biden government has said they are no longer restricting Ukraine. Just that it is frowned upon. Germany wants Russia not to be able to blame them after the 2nd World War and sent more Patriots after their earlier one was used.

Very interesting reason on northern offensive to get a chip on negotiating table. I think Russian fears of logics being cut to the south lets them have a point of contact that has solid logistics. This offensive also fixes forces that could push on Crimean.

Hi Jonathan, I would like to add/ask something to striking into Russia, because this really worries me. We soon hope to see F16’s defending Ukraine and attacking Russian positions. How restricted are these F16’s? Are they being provided with long range rockets by the US? In other words, are the F16’s in anyway useful to attack Russian planes that drop glide bombs from Russian airspace or can they only attack targets in Ukrainian territory? Strike from a (safe) distance is the best way to save Ukrainian troops. We can craft more rockets, but we cannot print Ukrainian troops. That being said, those countries that restrict certain usage of weapons, should rethink and remove the ball and chain. Don’t let Ukraine fight with one hand tight behind their back. Cheers, Rick

I wonder what those pills are. What makes sense would be Amphetamine ('Speed' today, 'Benzedrin' WW2), Methamphetamine ('Crystal Meth' today, 'Pervitin' in WW2) or Fenethylline (I think this was used by ISIS as well). Theoretically, Tilidine also makes sense ... there is this statement by a German policeman: 'If you need half a dozen adult policemen to get a rampaging 16-year-old under control, there is Tilidine in play.'

They were formed by recruiting volunteers from the National Guard and Territorial Defense who participated in the previous battles. They were never physically together.

With regard to the fear of escalation and Ukraine uses western weapons inside Russia: the point is not the use of foreign weapons, the point is that Ukraine is our proxy, whereas Russia doesn't have a proxy. Ukraine attacking Russia with western weapons would be equivalent to DPR forces attacking a NATO country (or it would have been, if Russia hadn't officially annexed the Donbass). It's about the proxy relations, not about where the weapons are from

Jonathan, the 7 month delay in receiving US aid has impacted Ukraine, and as you have stated, Ukraine's long delay in dealing with their manpower issues has been equally damaging to their current efforts at the front. But as reported in the US, the corruption in contracts with private firms to build lines of defense around Kharkiv is unforgivable, and will fuel more distrust in the US and EU among taxpayers who seem to be funding the corruption. Perhaps the mystery surrounding the motivation for Russia's offensive in the Kharkiv region is simple: Russians tracked money moving out of Ukraine back to the contractors, looked at the work that had not been completed, and saw an opportunity to gain some land. But whatever the strategy, they are going to move until they reach the Ukrainian lines of defense, wherever that is.

The right votes for the most corrupt person they can find and then insult the left for not being able to weed out every corrupt POS traitor that Russia has embedded in governments and militaries all over the world. Corruption is always a thing but it's almost never a reason not to act. It's a reason to have redundancy and a reason to develop and maintain good working relationships instead of thinking you can hide in your own country when expansionist countries start attacking their neighbors. Shoot and Scoot: I think, in context, Andrew's argument was that 'shoot and scoot' is not and has never been in US or UK military doctrines. Movement on the battlefield being the riskiest thing to do, especially with the prevalence of so many drones, staying still and digging bunkers for artillery is the safest option. In his opinion, 'shoot and scoot' is a marketing term, a possible feature / benefit used by manufacturers to sell the systems, although not used in military doctrinal practice.

this whole shoot and scoot argument is a tad silly. It was viable and is less so now but is not predominantly meant to be for unguided munitions.... the reduced viability can be made up for by combined arms tactics but again it is predominantly for high value platforms that launch guided munitions...

Possible emergency generators - retired locomotives from US & EU Train GRAVEYARD ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AY1CGnIB9AY.html I know they can’t be run on Ukraine rails, but I’m sure that the Engines and Generators from some should be reclaimable. Strip the engines and generators out, ship to Ukraine for use as emergency generators! Use these “small” generators as start of a distributed power grid.

Well said, Jonathan. It is indeed infuriating that Ukraine is restricted from hitting legitimate military targets with ally-provided weapons just because they happen to be sitting even just a short distance across the border from Kharkiv or anywhere else. What are the Ukrainians to do but fall back and allow Russia further inside Ukraine's borders if they're not allowed to hit military targets on the Russian side of the border, but only after they've crossed into Ukrainian territory? Hopefully, Ukraine has MUCH more carefully & extensively prepared the ground behind them as they pull back.

I don’t believe that the Ukrainian missile forces would use 10 300km ATCMs on the airfield attack seems like way too many to me! But hey what do I know 🇺🇦🇬🇧✌️

I guess it depends on the intel, amount of live targets, dud rates and the ability of russians to intercept a couple. Not forgetting how many long range atacms the US have handed or promised.

Ukraine has thousands of UAVs . The same plane packed with explosives that just got shot down in Tartisan could have been used to attack concentrations inside russia This is a very very lame excuse that we get from Ukraine all the time As for Kharkiv , Ukraine continually braggs about having 20 km, 30 km, 40 km 50 km 60 km 70 km 80 km 90 km 100km fpv drones all of which could have been peppering the russian troop concentrations for the last year.

RUSI is spot on. Plus, to compound effects the Russians don't necessarily need to take Kharkiv city. Any land grab is welcome for them but if they can push at least half of the 1.4 mln inhabitants out of their homes it will create a very serious burden for the Ukrainian administration. Putin doesn't have any reason to start negotiations. He will keep going until Ukraine sues for peace and would impose crushing conditions for the Ukrainians. Tough spot for Ukraine.

An economist in charge of a pointless invasion that is destroying the economy seems much more like an off ramp than getting serious. The idea that you have to replace the leader of your military with a bookkeeper in the middle of a war to be more thrifty is honestly funny. When the only way something even sounds possible is to call the previous leader an enemy in disguise and the new guy a magician who can somehow win a game he's never played...by saving some money???😂

Agreed that U.S. should remove all restrictions on using their provided weapon systems in and on russian territories. It is logical and in line with the use of russian weapons on Ukraine territories supplier by its allies. However, the suggestion that "because" Ukraine could not use U.S. weapon systems on russian territories, it resulted in the effective push of russian troop into Ukraine northern territories is unfounded. Agreed that using the weapons in Russian territory would have been useful, but if the Ukrainians were truthy aware of the russian plans, they would have targeted the russian troops once the crossed the border. This would have effectively created a massive kill-zone. The truth is, the Ukrainians were taken a bit by surprise, and some of the fortifications were not finished though they were funded. This is not the first time that Ukraine has paid for the construction of fortifications and the work has not produced results. Corruption is killing Ukrainians. It should be dealt. And yes, the U.S. should remove the restrictions as well.

Jonathan... the "new tactic" of small groups of Russian soldiers attacking in the Kharkiv area, then attempting to consolidate with other small groups, is most probably a strategy of probing Ukraine defenses. A tactic intent on reducing the initial costs of their actions. That type of action usually implies a much heavier offensive is planned and being prepared for. An offensive involving a push of a very significant number of tanks, and other heavy firepower on the grouond and in the air would typically be expected. It is also possible that Russia will seek to open several such fronts, knowing that Ukraine forces are severely strained and believed to be unable to respond to that type of action. It is very likely that Russia considers itself capable of maintaining its push in other areas along the front line, following the pattern there in recent months. The question is where is the Ukraine intel concerning Russian military movements and build up of forces. Of course that might be being held back as part of operational security concerns, but indications are strong that there ought to be some intel indicating how the Russian action is planned to develop. You cannot hide those types of movements very easily if at all. Russian convoys, traiins and redeployments of mustered assets, on the Russian side of the border would provide the necessary clues. We have to keep in mind that a large new crop of cannon fodder is either deployed or ready for deployment, and is likely to be bolstered by some additional utilization of some regular forces. Particularly in light of the recent changes at the Kremlin. We see a cluster of anti western hawks rising in power, increasing their control there. Expect some major moves in regards to the war. Russia is most probably going too escalate and intensify its military actions in its intent to subjugate all off Ukraine, with the intent to gain control and to maintain control under Soviet style rule.

Russia seems to have a lot of these fires even before the war, you only have to google it and there seem to be several a year lol. So I would guess half of them at least are accidents, they just don't seem too competent.

The money/weapons going to Ukraine is about 3% of just the Defense Budget. Plus, it's all equipment that your parents or grandparents paid for. 😊
