Jonathan... the "new tactic" of small groups of Russian soldiers attacking in the Kharkiv area, then attempting to consolidate with other small groups, is most probably a strategy of probing Ukraine defenses. A tactic intent on reducing the initial costs of their actions. That type of action usually implies a much heavier offensive is planned and being prepared for. An offensive involving a push of a very significant number of tanks, and other heavy firepower on the grouond and in the air would typically be expected. It is also possible that Russia will seek to open several such fronts, knowing that Ukraine forces are severely strained and believed to be unable to respond to that type of action. It is very likely that Russia considers itself capable of maintaining its push in other areas along the front line, following the pattern there in recent months. The question is where is the Ukraine intel concerning Russian military movements and build up of forces. Of course that might be being held back as part of operational security concerns, but indications are strong that there ought to be some intel indicating how the Russian action is planned to develop. You cannot hide those types of movements very easily if at all. Russian convoys, traiins and redeployments of mustered assets, on the Russian side of the border would provide the necessary clues. We have to keep in mind that a large new crop of cannon fodder is either deployed or ready for deployment, and is likely to be bolstered by some additional utilization of some regular forces. Particularly in light of the recent changes at the Kremlin. We see a cluster of anti western hawks rising in power, increasing their control there. Expect some major moves in regards to the war. Russia is most probably going too escalate and intensify its military actions in its intent to subjugate all off Ukraine, with the intent to gain control and to maintain control under Soviet style rule.

Ukraine has fought for over 2 years with one hand tied behind their back and blind in one eye. Hitting russia inside russia, as well as getting modern aircraft and modern equipment are long overdue. Ukraine is fighting our enemy as we speak, so why are we not giving them the very best equipment we have for Ukraine to do the job properly.

It's a shame this statement concerning using US weapons outside of UA territory came today rather than a few weeks ago, that would have been a game-changer for sure. I'm glad though Blinken implicitly delegated these important decisions to the ones that are fighting for their sheer land and existence.

Hi Jonathan, thank you for this update. I hope Ukraine will put it to good use and hit key positions where troops are being assembled. If I am not mistaken, the US is famous for leaving behind tons of armor/vehicles after a war, because it is not worth the cost shipping them back. Maybe the US could do a full scale training operation with Ukrainian troops in Rumania and Poland with tons and tons of material and leave them for Ukraine, being too expensive to take back home. The US might sell a few Bradley’s, Abraham’s and F16’s here and there, but most of them will never leave storage, until they will be scrapped or dumped into a huge hole in the dessert. It is a lot cheaper to buy the ammo and that ammo can be send to their destination much faster than the few dozen of armored vehiclesi being send in a batch as is currently done. I understand there are rules about selling weapons and it might be impossible to give them away (per a penny) by law, but maybe one could be creative. Probably my naive, wishful thinking though. Cheers, Rick

It’s a pity Blinken’s concession didn’t come a couple of weeks ago. The US is not alone in seeming to be constantly behind the curve. But the AFU has questions to answer. In relation to a long-anticipated attack on the Kharkiv axis, they appear to have dropped the ball. It is to be hoped that the senior command changes there have not come too late.

I’m glad to see Blinken’s trip to Ukraine was productive. More aid, expedited aid and using this aid to strike military targets inside russia. Better late than never I suppose. Maybe this is part of the boiling frog/lobster strategy? Whew, I was worried Blinken was just in Ukraine touring the nightclubs in Kyiv😉

Jonathan, the US have vast stocks of military equipment, but does Ukraine have enough manpower to use it? Do they have enough time to train their recruits to use that equipment before they are overrun by superior numbers of Russians? It takes months to train on the use of mobile artillery, M1 tanks, HIMARS, Patriots, F16s, etc. If you don't know how to turn on the engine of an M1, it isn't much use to you.

Now stop and have a think about what you are saying. There is no point in sending Ukraine more of anything than it can use RIGHT NOW In manufacturing we call it "just in time" Now being on time is fairly critical part of just in time so that needs to be looked at but if Ukraine got 1,000 bradleys then the 800 they do not have a driver for right now will be stored at a depot some where until an Iskander or 10 finds them then they are scrap metal . With a totally transparent battle ground the last thing Ukraine needs is more ammunition or armour than it can distribute right now unless they do a HAMAS and dig massive underground warehouses with lots of tunnels . Remember there is not a square millimeter of Ukraine that russia can not hit with a missile of some sort so any large military warehouse is a no no In fact a train load of military goods is a big target as we have seen twice to date . Now more transport routes would help. No reason why a lot more could not come in via Romania or even Moldova . From there it could be delivered by smaller aircraft using the touch & go technique where the pallets of ammo get dragged / pushed out out of the aircraft while it is landing or just off the runway so by the time the last one comes off the plane has already throttled up to take off . As the plane never actually stops it makes it very hard to hit . Same story with the cargo as it is sort of strewn along the entire length of the runway a single missile will rarely get the lot and of course 10 to 20 pallets can be grabbed by 10 to 20 forks then raced into safe storage

I wonder what those pills are. What makes sense would be Amphetamine ('Speed' today, 'Benzedrin' WW2), Methamphetamine ('Crystal Meth' today, 'Pervitin' in WW2) or Fenethylline (I think this was used by ISIS as well). Theoretically, Tilidine also makes sense ... there is this statement by a German policeman: 'If you need half a dozen adult policemen to get a rampaging 16-year-old under control, there is Tilidine in play.'

The US should start placing orders and pre paying for post war weapons deliveries from Ukraine as a way to fund start ups in Ukraine.
