Hi! My name is Ms. B and I am a happy teacher working in Okinawa, Japan. I love technology, I love learning more about the ukulele, and I love helping beginners.
I hope you found value in my video. Please let me know if there is a video I can make that will help you.

This is not a fail video. It's a success video if you can still play it. You didn't break your Ukulele, just the nut. Nuts are meant to be lightly tacked on so they can be changed, fixed and modified. You can use a fingernail file to loosen the slot and nuts are cheap and easy enough to replace. 😁 I wish I was as good at playing as I am at building and fixing things. Working on that, thanks to your help. ❤️

Oh! I didn't know that they're meant to be lightly tacked on! Thank you SO MUCH for letting me know! As soon as it popped off and I saw the dry glue residue I thought I had messed everything up! You and I would make a GREAT RU-vid team... you build stuff and I play it!

I bought a little twelve inch scale soprano and after the bridge flew off I could not help but notice that they did not have the courage to remove the finish from the entire surface that the bridge covered. Al of the glue was still stuck to the rose wood bridge. Using a sharp blade I was able to remove the layer of glue. Measuring the thickness of this layer with my micrometers I saw that it was the same thickness as the laquer finish which was twenty thousants if an inch. Some one needs to lecture them about adhesion and cohesion. Also I found the same amount of glue between the end of the fret board and the nut which did not do wonders for the intonation either. This perplexed me because the workmanship was otherwise incredible.

Wow, this is the best video I’ve ever watched teaching how to switch the G string. You actually showed the real happening issues one would encounter and your audience would learn a log from this than some perfectly made highly structured tutorials! Love u!❤
@Markle2k
@Markle2k 6 лет назад
If the nut gets knocked off, that's OK. They are only put on with a minimum of glue. If you thin out Elmer's Glue (or the like) 1:1 with water, you can spread it thin enough to avoid squeeze out. Then use the strings to hold the nut down while the glue cures. Bone replacement nuts for your chipped one are less than $10 and it looks like a lot throw in a bridge saddle as well. It's the gauged nut slotting files that are sort of expensive. My concert uke has a compensated saddle, so the intonation would be way, way off for a wound low G. That's something else to consider.
@VeryBeri1
@VeryBeri1 6 лет назад
When I change the strings, I only change one at a time (starting with G). That way neither the nut nor the bridge will come off.

Thanks so much for this video. I have an Hola tenor ukulele that just didn't really do it for me. So I took the plunge and changed the strings to these and used the low G. I would have never had the courage to change the strings myself or try out the low G but I did it and it sounds great now! Thanks again Ms. B for being a great teacher and demo gal!

Besides the great sound, low G adds a few more notes, too. I really like your enthusiasm and excitement. You undoubtedly enjoy teaching and are a natural. Your videos are new and refreshing with some great animation. As to adding your own strings, I take mine to the shop and pay the $15, but hey, I'm an old geezer. :)

Generally nuts need to be modified to fit the low G. If you buy a new nut you may have to file ALL of the slots to fit. A file from a fingernail clipper works pretty good, it makes the groove wider but not deeper (file evenly on both sides of the slot so you don't change the string spacing). Whatever you use be careful not to make it too wide, file gradually. Sometimes the nuts are not glued or just barely glued. Use regular Titebond (not II or III) or hide glue to glue a nut so it's removable in the future if need be.

The main reason that the ukulele has re entrant tuning was because of the necesity of doing so in eighteen eighties Hawaii. They had everything they needed to make the unwound gut strings on the islands at the time. The string winding lathe is something that was far away in the industrial world. Since it would be economically unfeasible to import, they were not intending to play melody or scales, it did not matter at the time. It was about the same time that a lot of people wanted to play banjo by simply strumming like on the ukulele but decided to just remove the offending string and the plectrum banjo was born. These days you have all these five string banjo players that are discovering the wonders of the ukulele in that you can play it claw hammer style. I am waiting to see people discover that you can flat pick on nylon strings to, just like Django and Willy.

I wish I had watched this video when I went from a high G to a low G. I did the exact same thing: I tried to use a file to get the string to fit in the nut, and the outside half chipped off. It is comforting knowing that I'm not the only one that this happened to.

I fitted a US-made Fremont brand low G on the suggestion of the Koaloha factory in Hawaii. Wasn't sure my tenor Opio model would handle a wound string. Koaloha backed their instrument so I went ahead with a mail order to the US. The string is wound and polished. I love it's precision and clarity, and the easy way it plays. To my ear solid fluoro low G strings sound a little muddy by comparison, and prone to dead spots around the 6th-7th fret. My advice, first check your local music store for wound and polished options if you are thinking of going to a low G. Confess I also had some concerns fitting and tying it through the tie bar but with a little care it worked out fine. Happily the nut didn't need any work to accept the new string.

Hello Ms. B, By way of introduction, I had previously posted following your "Imagine" lesson, but still new to your videos and ukulele stuff overall. Love your videos, and yes, this one too. It was not only informative, but magical, and certainly not in a bad way. Longtime guitar player. Got my first ukulele last year (Kala STG tenor) but was making the mistake of transposing guitar stuff to ukulele. Now approaching it as a separate instrument and reaping some rewards. Basically learning new material for ukulele only. About the G string thing, I followed a different path, very recently (last week) getting a Kala ATP5 5 string tenor. It has a low G and a high g doubled in octave, in place of just a single g string. I have a 12 string guitar, so it made sense to me to try this route. I am very pleased with the sound of this instrument, almost like hearing a second voice to the mix when strummed. And the instrument itself sounds tremendous. Having seen your results, I will definitely pick up another tenor ukulele at some point (when I can next afford one) and string it with a low G like you did. So there's my story. I was wondering if you had considered trying a 5 string as a solution? Right now I'm loving mine. And I also noticed that when playing my traditionally tuned ukulele, I have often been semi-consciously claw-picking some other string with the high g string so it gets a harmonizing voice to go along with its higher pitch. (I mostly finger pick.) Thank you again for your videos. Sorry for this being a longish post.

I was undecided about ordering my first ukulele with a low G string, but after watching your video I decided to go ahead and order it that way. It has to be easier to switch to a high G string later on instead of the other way around. :-)

Your antics are so humorous Bernie, thanks for the laughs! I also like the sound of the Low G but I soon missed the High G sound; I then went out and bought another Ukulele to get my High G sound back. These days I only play the Low G Uke when a specific song requires the low notes like when playing chord melodies (finger style); otherwise I stick with my High G Ukes for most songs. I suspect you own several ukuleles and I am sure you will find a compromise also! I really do like your channel, thanks for posting regularly!

Hello Bernadette I have a question. I bought a used Baritone Ukulele. There a the strings defect. I think which strings i do on now. I still play sopran and concert ukulele and I am very happy with the sound. Would you do low g strings from tenor Ukulele used on baritone Ukulele or is it an bad idea? I hope you have time for an answer.

This was very hilarious to watch! I actually borrowed my girlfriend's soprano ukulele and thought about changing the strings myself because they don't sound very good (and I wanna learn how to do it). Would a low G make sense on a soprano at all? Cause I would love to try that, it sounds so beautiful in your demonstration.

You need to file the nut slot. You can get a music store to do it or get a nut file. I have switched my tenor uke over to low G and the string was ok as it was. They were fluorocarbon (Worth Brown) which I think are thinner than nylon which is why I think I got away with it. I love love love low G.
@BernadetteTeachesMusic

Hey Nick! Yes, I tried using the side of the scissors to file the sides of the nut (and failed at it!). I think once I started the video, I decided that I was going to push through it!
@NickMarotta
@NickMarotta 6 лет назад
Yeah they make tools specifically to widen the nuts. You have to be careful when doing so to keep the slot the right shape. :) Try fluorocarbon strings and maybe you won't have to worry about it at all. It also looks like your nut is detachable which is nice. Hey, can you give me a shoutout on your next video? I love watching your stuff and it would be cool :) :)

the beginning was so funny! !! a question: is it possible that a string gets old before the others? I kinda hear that the G gets out of tune immediately, while the others not...but I'm a beginner so I could be imagining it. (even if the tuner gives me reason). Could it be the tuning peg?? however how often do you change your strings? (for example I'm playing all days, 30-60'). sorry about the questions storm.

I want to try the Fluorocarbon ones in your video. I bought the low G set that is clear nylon and they weren't that great. They still didn't settle after 2 weeks, couldn't hold their tuning for more than a couple of minutes of playing. The G sounds way too overpowering compared to the other strings that came with it. I put the new fluorocarbon high g set on my concert and they sound great though so I'm thinking it's just the nylon ones that were the problem.

I've been using a concert ukulele for nearly a year so far but what annoy me is the high g so tinny and thin sound....what I love the most in the low g is the bass and the richness of the sound ...After practicing for a long time I found out that there are some notes that can't be played on high G as it doesn't provide a wide range in playing as in Jazz music and classical music.... So my question is can I switch the high g with the low g on concert ukulele.?

Haha, as I was changing strings last time... my cat got crazy to ^^. Do you use your low-G uke often? Or do you prefer high-G after the trying?

So, luthiers are a thing, right? A stringed instrument from the hands of skilled luthier is a dream to play. A chop job like we've tried to do is a great lesson.

Me fascinan tus videos! Could I use the tenor with the "normal" high G strings (at least think those are the normal ones!) to play generic uke songs from chords/tabs found online? Also, since you say we can request vids, I would love to see a review on Yousician for ukuleles. RU-vid and other places advertise it nonstop but their aren't many youtube reviews from youtubers I trust, mostly just a handful of random kids that have about as much experience as me! ;-)

Cómo se llama esta cosita? ! 😁it sounds so sweet with the new strings !! La “cosita” viene pegada? O sólo queda ahí por la fuerza de las cuerdas? No desarme nunca mi ukelele...

La "cosita" viene pegada pero con lo humedo y caliente que es okinawa, la goma se secó :'( pero parece que con la fuerza de las cuerdas es suficiente ❤️

Hey? Can you tell me? What will happen if i replace my high G string from my soprano Ukulele and attach a low G tenor string to my soprano! What can happen? Please tell me I'm clueless and confused... Cause I'm not able to get the low g soprano near by neither anywhere on the internet in a bit less costly!!

I have a tenor that I would like to try a low G on. Do you recommend opening the nut for a low G or buy another ukulele?.. I really don't want to do anything permanent...
@BernadetteTeachesMusic
@BernadetteTeachesMusic 6 лет назад
that is a good question. If I only had one ukulele, I would buy a separate nut and not glue it on... I would just let the tension of the strings hold it down.

Yeah you don't have to change all of them unless you want to. You can just switch the G string.

Very funny!😂 Last week I also tried to change my uke for a low G. But tried to change my soprano, I know normally only tenors come in low G but I read in some forums people that changed sopranos successfully, so I went for it! I use Fremont strings, so I bought just a low G one and as they are not that thick I didn't need to change the nut, however, it sounded horrible! I guess it only works well on concerts or tenors... But hey! Now I have an excuse to buy a tenor! 😁

0:19 hahahaha, the first time I changed a low G on my Tenor the hole in the bridge wasn't big enough... it took me a long long long long time just for 4 notes (G-B).... but the first time I played "The Joker" on it it was worth it!

Muy buen video y cómico jeje , I just put a guitar G string on my Concert size, so far I love the heavier sound, waiting for my new tenor tomorrow with Aquila’s low G. I’m a fluorocarbon guy, love the sound and how easy on the fingers they are! This video came at a perfect time and please do a high vs low g type of video. BENDICIONES!!!

Bernadette Teaches Music You're welcome! :) Perhaps you can advise me a little? I'm not a player although I intend to make more effort hence why I'm looking at these video's. I bought a Kala PWT mainly because it had a wound string on the 'C'. It broke sometime after even though I hadn't used it and that's when I found out that a wound C is unusual. I bought this Uke as I liked the sound better than the others I heard. Guess I like a guitar sound more than the standard hawaiian soft sound. The shop even denied selling me the Kala with this string setup and called me a liar which pleased me no end. Hobgoblin Music in Canterbury found me a suitable replacement (although now I think the C is too prominent). The other Canterbury shop insult there customers so high five to Hobgoblin for being really decent nice guys! Have you come cross such a setup before? Low G and I guess it's a low C. I will probably replace the C with a normal string even though it did sound nice with the shop fitted wound C. As for the guy with the bad sounding Uke I mentioned, his video is good and he did a good comparison but urghh, his two Ukuleles sound poor. Thanks to you again :) I now have an Aquila set with a low G which I will fit soon. I was thinking of trying the wound G and also the wound C.

@@BernadetteTeachesMusic Your ukulele with the low g sounds great. Unfortunately however, myself and others have experienced a boomy or overpowering sound (I don't mean these specific strings necessarily..its across a few brands.). I guess it's down to a combo of how both the strings and ukulele are made.
