@@johnsmith-ir1neThat’s a bit harsh - saying she stopped caring? I believe she found it difficult to cope in the spotlight; especially after her family home was broken into by a crazed fan. She probably suffered a great deal of misogyny and sexism in the industry because of looks, and of course she was pitted against her own sister regarding their vocals and looks. THAT alone must’ve been hard.
She didn't suffer misogyny; in reality, her Scandinavian blonde looks gave her an unfair privilege/advantage over more average looking men, or black and brown women/men who struggled to gain equal support despite having similar talents. Let's not engage in culture war or speculation please. What she had, was integrity and a very healthy distaste for fame. Unlike most of her peers, she treasured privacy and family over fame and fortune. She rightfully got sick of infatuated fans, journalists, and record companies. She made the right decision: apathy. Unfortunately some of her fans never got the message, and continue with their enamoration. We should respect her wishes and let her be.
In the beginning Ace of Base had problems to strike in Sweden. This is probably because journalists are generally leftist in Sweden. Everything in music should be based on criticism against something or a protest about something. ABBA and Roxette became so big in just a couple of months so that nobody listened to irrelevant swedish journalist. The music critics had time in Sweden to affect people´s minds, how uncool it would be to like Ace of Base, that it took some time to get passed this...But this swedish naivity, happy-go lucky was in tune what most of the world population imagined of Sweden. They thought it was true, that it was genuine, and they LOVED IT....
