when I first landed in ultima Thule yesterday, it felt really empty and the music sounded like if the last person alive on the planet was blasting a song on the radio

I’ve never seen another comment where someone has thought the same about the radio. When I first arrived, I had such a strange feeling and it was like 4am. It just his so different. It was like the last bastion, empty, futile but still hopeful.

@@ryanrushford7918 Shit, same here. I was thinking about a radio too. But for different reasons. I was thinking more like someone was listening to a song that they liked for the longest time, on an old radio. It has an "old memory, from long ago" vibe to it.

It's like what you would hear in your head leaving a diner at two in the morning. Standing in the chill night air, half-illuminated by the flickering neon lights of the signage. Fog playing in the pines just beyond the edge of the parking lot. A kind of momentary, ephemeral solitude. The kind of fleeting moment that makes you wish you smoked, so you'd have an excuse to linger there, even for a few minutes more.

Ultima Thule really gave off that "Final Fantasy ending zone" vibe. What I like most about it is that you always had "The nest" in mind as the final zone. But what does it actually look like? We never knew until we got there, and with "our friends" speech before the zone's reveal... it couldn't have been more perfect.
@ralk7048
@ralk7048 2 года назад
A subtle thing, but in Japanese they entertain some kind of wordplay with the words "Final Fantasy" themselves. For example, the trial "The Minstrel's Ballad: Ultima's Bane", which is "究極幻想 アルテマウェポン破壊作戦" in Japanese, can be translated to "Final Fantasy: Ultima Weapon Destruction Operation". The "final" here is about how the ultima weapon is the ultimate construct the mighty Allagans came up with. The Lv. 90 dungeon "Dead Ends" is "最終幻想 レムナント" in Japanese, and translates to "Final Fantasy: Remnant". The "final" here is more about the end of all these failed civilisations and "fantasy" alludes to how all of this is an illusion of the Meteia. Not to mention that every dungeon gets their own 4-word prefix description in Japanese like these do. The English translation team does a very good job preserving most of the meaning the Japanese version tries to convey, but there's still these small things that are neat but gets lost in translation; on the other hand, the English version does sometimes express official nuances that you don't find in the Japanese version. For example, after Lahabrea casts Ultima, Gaius said "What is this power?!" in Japanese, but the English version "Such devastation... This was not my intention..." actually fleshes Gaius out a bit more, very early into the game's story before we meet him again.

@@ralk7048 I kind of feel naming anything explicitely "Final Fantasy" in Ultima Thule would be a little too on the nose, even by FFXIV standards. I must admit the very first time I saw the quest name "You're Not Alone" I was expecting some sort of rendition of the classic FFIX track to play somewhere, but in hindsight the name was enough. Endwalker's story was a culmination of 10 years of XIV. It wouldn't feel right to have these last pivotal moments tie themselves too much to older entries and their legacy. FFXIV, especially in this final area, emulates them through its atmosphere and it's themes best. Hearing the Main Theme begin to play as the credits start was amazing though.
@lilporky8565
@lilporky8565 Год назад
@ralkuth7048 With what you said in mind, I'm thinking a better name for Dead Ends would be Fantasies of Finality or something to that end, partly, of course, because it ties in with the title, but also because it relates to meteions childlike nature and the way she romanticizes death.

Just so yall know, ultima thule is a real place. It is a space object beyond Neptune, it is 32 km long. It was the farthest object in the solar system visited by man-made craft in 2019, hence the name ultima thule (which means "farthest point" or "farthest location"). The name was changed to arrokoth

Thule doesn't mean farthest point. Thūlē is the most northerly location mentioned in ancient Greek and Roman literature and cartography. Modern interpretations have included Orkney, Shetland, Northern Scotland, the island of Saaremaa (Ösel) in Estonia, and the Norwegian island of Smøla. It's the combination of 'Ultima' AND 'Thule' that means farthest Thule.

ties well how the individuals that are ultima thule were in a state of despair, given up on the future cuz they see no way out themselves. the distorted theme is the accumulation of all their suffering until we arrived, giving them a resolution to keep on going as the theme cleared slowly one by one.

When I did the "Returning Home" quest, when you choose which character visits you at night (I choose G'raha btw) I wanted to know all other dialogues, and most of them revolve around the idea of being worried for you, or showing you support, or telling you their concerns, etc. Thancred is like "I trust you and the Scions with my life, and I'd like to think the feeling is at least occasionaly mutual", and being worried if his choices from now on could put the rest in danger and asking you to beat some sense into it and wanting to know if he has your back and your support, almost going completely opposite on the general idea of what the rest says. He's not asking you to show restraint, he's asking you to go beyond. He's asking you if you're willing to sacrifice yourself for him in the same way he's willing to do it for you and the rest of the Scions. Then Ultima Thule happens. The Ragnarok arrives, you meet Meteion once again, and what Thancred does? He does exactly what he wanted to know if you were willing to do: to sacrifice yourself for him and the rest of the Scions, but instead he takes it for the team, before you can even think about "beating some sense into him". He didn't need any kind words as proof that you would 100% do what he asked. It's almost as if all he did that night when he visited you, is to let you know that when the time comes, he's going to do what needed to be done. "I trust you and the Scions with my life, and I'd like to think the feeling is at least occasionaly mutual". Thancred is gone. Now this song plays.

If you listen to this version and the next iteration, you can hear the same thing in both, but the part it plays is totally different. Here it sounds like a mechanical beeping that's not related to the rhythm of the song - like a medical device - but once you have the beat and the clarity in the next version, you can hear that it's a repeated piano note that's actually a syncopated part of the main rhythm. That one repeated note goes from invoking ideas of life barely clinging on in the first version to contributing a liveliness to the rhythm of the second version, which is the sort of combination of storytelling and music that I'd normally assume was me reading too much into it if this wasn't FFXIV.

it's absolutely the feeling of resignation, of a bitter end, but one you can't help being nostalgic for; of lying down and giving up and falling into a long sleep that you never wake up from. I really enjoy the way that the "skies clear" with this track so to speak as our Warrior carries forward with hope and literally warps the fabric of this place into "a way through". even though it's sad, even though we're saying our goodbyes, there is always the promise of a new beginning around the corner if you just have the courage to see it through..

The way I interpreted the dragons when first entering Ultima Thule: They have no home, their offsprings are either born mutated from the environment or not born at all. They have no reasons to sing, so when I read their dialog it's with hopeless whispers of elders in mourning. I still feel immense sorrow for them, they fought to save their homeworld from the Omicron civilization, and by the time they were defeated the same conquerors moved on seeing the expenditure of resources to have been a costly war but left them unhindered for the next world, leaving the dragons with nothing to rebuild.

When I arrived in this zone, I was captivated by the scenery and the music. The landscape is desolate and eerie, yet still somehow beautiful in this multitude of dark shades, all floating around the most alien skies a space setting could muster. All the while, you have this theme playing, somewhat looping wrongly and droning on and on, like a broken radio still echoing from the corner of a large disaffected warehouse. You're not supposed to be here - nobody is - in this place where time itself comes to die, yet there's still so much (tragic?) beauty all around, and nobody to experience it; much less appreciate it. Still, both provided a welcome distraction from the ambiant... depression of the place, in a way. The music in peculiar reminded me of other works structured around loops and sound degradation, such as Basinski's "Disintegration Loops" or Hecker's "Ravedeath". Meanwhile the nebulae and other objects in the skies lighted up again my incredible appreciation for the care that goes into crafting even the most basic details as a skybox in this game. Great work all around.

A place where the hopeless dreams of the dead linger and play back endlessly. But amidst all that there is still a sense of hope in the song, an ironic sense of hope that grows despite the loss of those who came with us.

I always thought Echoes in the Distance is weird as hell, and I didn't realized why until the end of Ultima Thule. Only read on if you finished Endwalker. It is very unique, but at the same time doesn't make sense as a standalone soundtrack. It is the complete opposite of the full soundtrack at the end with the singing voice (which is hopeful and bright). Right when you enter Ultima Thule for the first time you are instantly greeted with this unholy abomination of a soundtrack, something is terribly wrong in this place. It feels like you are walking through a mass graveyard, while shadows of long gone creatures are idly watching you. Neither death or undeath, but in a uncanny stasis inbetween, they dont even exist anymore. Echoes in the Distance represents pure chaos and fear of the unknown, the whole spooky atmosphere of the zone which are death planets and long extinguished races which still give you the feeling as if you are being watched for every step you make. Ultima Thule sounds very sad and the various races you encounter confirm the existential nihilism they all have and share. The instrumental is incomplete, I am not a musician, but you can tell there are some core elements missing, it sounds shallow and hollow, it sounds muffled, various notes that are extremely off. A giant veil of shadow is over the entire zone and it's story. Until you progress in the zone itself. Then you realise it's all a big lie, or to be more precise: we didn't saw the whole picture. It is easy to get lost in the negative and become essencially nihilistic, you think "what's the point?" even. To say it in the words of the legendary Littlefinger: "Chaos is a Ladder", to live is to suffer and to suffer is to live. So much to the philosophy and the soundtrack, I love Endwalker especially for it, it went even deeper than Shadowbringers.

This is NOT something you should listen to while depressed.

Endwalker was an experience. Sure, I almost quit halfway because of the drag out in the first 30 quests and some parts of it really felt like it was all over the place thanks to the many writers, but i liked the atmosphere of it. Felt natural once you got to garlemald and beyond. Minus the stuff in thavnair. Maybe I'm a harsh critic

Nah, you're not that harsh. I had similar complaints about the opening act of the game. Up until Garlemald, it felt really slow in places. The Labyrinthos section at the start really irked me. But I figured that the feeling of sluggishness there was partially because of the frantic pace established by the prior 2 patches before EW launched, with Fandaniel's arrival on the stage and all that came after and all that. It was a sudden and stark contrast that kinda made things feel like a slog for the first few hours. But yeah, once it picked up, it PICKED UP.

Was kind of the same for me, the set up while I think was necessary to make all the doom that happens later have more of an impact did kinda drag a bit till Garlemald then the game went into overdrive and kept smacking me with the feels right until the final battle.

I completely understand. I think the pacing of some parts was a little underwhelming or exhausting - I'm still kinda sad the Moon ended up not being as important as I had imagined it was - but the overall product was great FF14 is a game I love more and more with each passing day. In a few years, this expansion will be as iconic as something like Heavensward was

It feels like that because it literally is all over the place. It unites and bundles everything into one ultimate expansion. It doesn't have that gripping focus, like Shadowbringers for example. Which further is confirmed by the fact that the finale of the whole saga was originally for 7.0, they decided to put it on 6.0. Which is in no means necessarily bad, but yeah. It truly speaks volumes that the writers still managed to make it all feel logical and smooth, even tho we went from A to Z real quick. With that being said I wholeheartedly love this expansion and think it is atleast on par with Shadowbringers and trumps it even in some regards imho.
