I bought my first pcp a week ago. ( an Avenge-x). I feel so blessed finding you on Utube. I’ve spent the last week trying to learn to tune by watching videos and reading everything I can find. Although I’ve learned a lot. 2 hours of frustration this afternoon taught me that I haven’t mastered this art yet. I came in for supper and saw that you posted a new tuning video. After watching this video, things really coming clear to me. I’ve already watched it twice. Can’t wait to start over fresh tomorrow with my new knowledge to execute! Thank you sir! BTW, as someone with a background in training people, I really appreciate your communication skills! Thanks again!

Steve Have been following you for years and have watched you grow as both as an air gun expert ,an educator and a producer and editor of videos. You have set a high bar for others to emulate .All industries need pioneers that become leaders. Your latest effort is by far and large, the best informational and instructional video on air rifles particularly on PCP’s that I have ever seen. And at 75 years old partner I’ve seen a lot of them! Don’t know where you go from from here as this is been like waiting for your favorite movie open up at the Multiplex! So I will now go and watch your video over and over again stopping and taking screenshots as well as taking notes. A lot to absorb relative to some of the tuning aspects. Glad I got the 25 instead of a 7:52 . Stay well

This video really helped get me started with my PCP adventure. I also bouht an Avenge-X 25 cal before watching this video, so it was extremely useful for me, and I can't thank you enough. I keep a "DOPE" book for my various tunes for different pellets and slugs now, and I track changes/updates over time as the springs lose tension and "settle". Mine have settled in now and stayed consistent, so now that data can help me track when/if the springs are starting to wear out and need replacement.

Thanks Steve. This is a great tuning class. There's one other adjustment that isn't mentioned. That's the exhaust valve return spring tension. I have watched Mr. Robert Lane's videos detailing how to balance a PCP air rifle's system and he's definite that the return spring tension, or pressure be increased, or decreased to work efficiently with the regulator's firing chamber pressure. He describes how the regulated pressure, the valve return spring tension, the hammer stroke length, transfer port diameter, and hammer spring pressure must be balanced to make the system work properly. His tuning videos are on RU-vid also. I'm not saying you're doing it wrong, I just noticed this difference between tuning techniques. My friend has a .177 Avenger and has started to retune his avenger after watching this video. I'm interested to see what he gets when he's done. I have a .177 Avenger that I bought before the X was released. I like it but, it's regulator doesn't refill quickly at the lower pressures ie. 1800-2000psi. I returned it to Air Venturi for service. Both PyramydAir and Air Venturi have been very helpful. R, Steve
@AEAC

In my experience Regulators in general don't refill as quickly as the bottle.pressure comes down. Not sure if that's what he's experiencing but I get what you're saying.

I find that the best, fastest and easiest way to tune is to first find out at what velocity your gun shoots your favorite pellet.. Most .22 will shoot 18 grain pellets accurately between 800-900 fps so with that said the first thing to do is degas the gun and set the regulator to a low pressure.. Max out your hammer and begin to shoot and turn your regulator up until you reach around 950-960 fps (5 -15 shots will do it).. then decrease your hammer until you reach 850 fps and make adjustments to your hammer (either up or down) until you reach max accuracy.. you are done.. As weather conditions change you can tweak for accuracy by making small adjustments to the hammer.. With a .22 you will probably find that the regulator is between 1800-2000 and velocity between 860-880 with 18 grain pellets.. My Avenge-X is set at 1900 on the regulator and shoots JSB 18.13 grain at 880-890 fps and pretty much will do hole in hole at 50 yards (5 shots well under 1/2 inch consistently)..

Thank you for this lesson on tuning the Aveng X. My Nova Vista Liberty is literally worn out and this platform is the perfect replacement. I like the tube version the best but want the gun as lightweight as possible. Wood stock or synthetic? Which will be the lightest sir? .22 cal. Having the H/L knob is a really nice feature that my Liberty has and is awesome when doing pest control inside buildings where I don’t need that full power shot. Mine drops from 900 fps on H to 725 fps on L power. Very handy. Stay blessed.

Just received my Avenge-X in 0.177 with a 210 cc Cylinder. Maybe obvious but... I want to shoot the H&N 16gr slugs. I set my reg to 140 bar and do not reach the velocity I want. After I increase the reg to say 150 bar do I need to reduce HS to 0 turns and start over or can I continue with the HS from where I left off when testing at 140 bar. It seems to me that at a higher pressure a higher HS is required. Keep them coming my friend. Thank you for what you offer to the AG community!
@AEAC
@AEAC 6 месяцев назад
No you don't need to back all the way off the hammer spring with each new regulator adjustment. After raising the regulator 10 bar you can leave the hammer where it is and work it slowly up from there. You are correct about a higher regulator pressure needing more hammer spring tension to balance out the valve. Steve

I never can tell with moderators and I'm blessed to have them all on hand here. Its always one of those goofy things where I've got to try them all to see which works best for the tune...Never any rhyme or reason to it. I know this probably isn't what you want to hear but it's what I've found. Probably the best way for a guy to go about it would be to buy a modular moderator so that one can tune its length to suit your tune. It's also a good practice to plus-size the moderator caliber one size larger than the barrel caliber. Steve

Id be interested to know how you use the radar chronographs. I notice you use both the LBR and the new FX radar, in your opinion can the FX replace the LBR? I also have both and so far the fx radar has been kind of disappointing for data collection compared to the LBR. I also can appreciate that 99% of most people will never put the SD card from the LBR in there pc to look at the raw data. personally i think FX radar comes up short since you cant true the radar data or even see it all. great job explaining tuning though!
@AEAC
@AEAC 7 месяцев назад
Thanks, glad you liked the tunes. For me, I'll be using the FX TBC for all my field filming, 100% of the time. It's waaaay more user friendly than the Lab Radar to aim & track to 100 + yards, it's much easier to tote around, and it doesn't have a trigger-microphone that the wind constantly false trips. Love it for all that plus it's on screen BC readings. For home shot chart making, I like the Lab Radar better simply because of its removable SD card and because it doesn't erase the data each time it powers off....hate it that the TBC does this. Steve
@griffinairgunammo7518
@griffinairgunammo7518 7 месяцев назад
@@AEAC Thank you for the reply! I have been a fan of yours for many years, this is probably the best channel for newcomers to our sport to gain a good understanding of how things work. On the radar topic thanks again for your honest opinion. I agree with everything you said The TBC is definitely easier to use. As a ammo maker I spend a lot of time measuring and calculating BC and that's my big complaint with the TBC is there is no way to graph the data or even see the raw data at all. Also the onboard BC calculation is a little fishy to me since there is no atmospheric compensation used to calculate BC which is not how BC works. It works with there software because the app can correct for that but i think only there app can correct for that. I can also appreciate that less then 1% of people will even notice this lol Im just a little salty with it because I really wanted it to replace my LBR for my graphs and charts. keep the great work! Hopefully Ill get a chance to meat you one these days at a event or something just need to higher some help so i can take a day off lmao!

Nice to see you guys as well! I've been working on airgun projects on a regular basis without any breaks... just bigger longer taking ones... 11 weeks on the Avenge X, 2 weeks filming & organizing footage from the Pyramyd Air Cup... 3 weeks on the Diana XR200, etc. Adds up. But yeah, got lots of good things planned. On Sunday I head to Texas to film at the AirForce/RAW airgun factory, after that I'll edit the Pyramyd Air Cup video for us, then I've got an Avenge X hunting trip/video planned with Tyler Patner and Saber Tactical, then the new FX King comes for a review. My whole year is already booked with tons of RU-vid projects... so yeah man! Plenty regular, lol!! Steve

Steve excellent video ..thank you. Some questions from observations tuning my Ghost that I got late last Sept 1. It appears to me that the valve opening and closing happens before the regulator can come into play and maintain set pressure in the plenum and thus effect the shot ..I put a Sekhmet digital gauge on the plenum/regulator and it records the plenum pressure dropping depending on what caliber weight pellet I am shooting from >50 psi to >80 psi. 2. Regulator Set Pressure: At this point I have come to the conclusion the Regulator should be set based on how many shots you want to take before refilling...with the higher the set pressure the "snappier" the shot, and less time it takes for the shot action-pellet to leave the barrel...Since I refill at 200 bar bottle pressure, I have been using a set pressure of ~190 bar for the Regulator....and since the Ghost has 5 different hammer springs and an adjustable hammer spring preload...I am not seeing any downside to this...what are your vastly more experineced thoughts? [also the higher the plenum pressure, the faster the air flows and the more energy it has...so you should use less air per shot...]
@AEAC
@AEAC 6 месяцев назад
In my mind it's just a balancing act. The Regulator is the master flow control into the system and the valve meters the air pulse to the transfer port. They must be in balance with one another to achieve efficiency and accuracy. The way I get the valve to shut faster is to increase the regulator pressure on it, and back off the hammer spring tension just a tad. One can pick up a lot of accuracy and efficiency that way. Hope this helps, Steve

Ok so what would be the flattest trajectory in .25 JSB 34gr or JSB 26gr if they where both leaving the muzzle at 900 fps ? And better in wind

By 10: 00, the lesson is seen as Very Valuable and complete. The inside view of the air was a bit hurried tho, and Where do we get the blue air? 😁 19: 46. So in this quality gun the hammer spring settles, and many break-barrel coil springs break. Yet all 16 valve springs in your vehicle will easily last 200,000 miles, with the number of reciprocations being millions, and the number of stores fully compressed being many thousands. And not counting the cars that sit in barns for 30 years, then start and run fine. Who's the spring designer that can answer that riddle?

Tune to the Fpe you require to dispatch ur quarry if u r a Hunter!!! Ck a chart to see... fps will be watever at this point
@AEAC
@AEAC 7 месяцев назад
I prefer to prioritize accuracy & stability in the wind... especially for hunters. In my experience, pellets and slugs are VERY speed-sensitive... like within a 5-10 fps window for premium accuracy. But yeah, agreed, being humane is important. Steve

I was with u . Then u started on the slugs. If u dont know where the tune should be or what speed they want to be shot at. How do first start with a slug that likes your barrel. How will u know if u dont have a tune . Are u just shooting different slugs at whatever speed and tune and just looking for the best performance then tune after that to that slug to get it as accurate as possible?
@AEAC
@AEAC 6 месяцев назад
You are correct that the right way to go to about it is to find a slug and tune together that your gun likes. But you can also.do as I did and create a max power tune and then go in search of a slug that liked it. Steve

I'm confused by your graphs around 16:50. You talk about shot-to-shot consistency, which is usually standard deviation or maximum spread of fps. The graph itself is showing fps vs. spring turns. You show your numbers on the screen at 18:35 but there isn't a plateau like in the example and the slope is fairly consistent. Are we looking for a plateau in fps, or a plateau in standard deviation?
