Good questions Wizzy! Boxy pixel puts some sort of clear coat on his button which I believe so prevent oxidation. I think the metal in metal contact isn’t much of an issue from my time using it. Haven’t notice any gouging. Hope this helps. Cheers!
My first ever Gameboy was a yellow Gameboy Color. I got it when I was 6 y/o from KC Toys in a shopping mall. It was that moment that my gaming life began. Thank you Tito for creating this and your level of detail of your production.
I have the brass buttons on my Boxy Pixel build as well. I recommend lacquering the the raw brass buttons to prevent oxidation, or at the very least slow down the process. Hit it with some alcohol (iso or denatured) to clean and then use a spray lacquer. I did three coats. They’ll stay shiny for a long time.
I'm so glad I found your channel - your videos are informative, gorgeous and really well laid out and designed. You deserve WAY more subs than you have, and I'll be sure to share links to your vids with others. I hope you're keeping well!
Watching this video convinced me to buy. Got the Aluminum GameBoy shell in the mail today. The shell feels so good and looks even better. Can't wait for my IPS screen to come in so I can put it all together.
Awesome David! It's a great shell. I'm a huge fan of Boxy Pixel! Would love to see how it comes out. If you have an instagram account, post a picutre and tag me in it so I can check it out. Cheers buddy!
Its so rare finding a small youtuber who puts so much effort on there videos the filming is great tbh the filming he does is something you would see on multi million subscriber channels good work
Looks incredible! I haven’t done any GBC mods yet. The only thing I would add is an amp to bring up the speaker volume. After seeing this, I’m really wanting to build one; I have to try out those brass buttons!
Macho Nacho Productions I’ve been trying to find a tutorial or even just basic info on adding Bluetooth audio to Gameboys. There’s one video I can find on RU-vid that shows one working but not much information on how it’s done beyond using a cheap Bluetooth transmitter board from eBay/AliExpress. I get that it’s not the most important mod-even the Switch doesn’t have Bluetooth audio-but one of the reasons I love modding is learning how these boards work. If you happen to read this (way too long) post and you’re up for it, I’d love to see a video involving adding Bluetooth audio to a Gameboy
That would be a great mod! I actually remember seeing that video a while ago. I'm surprised no one really made a kit for that. Unfortunately making something like that may be beyond my abilities. Cheers dude!
Tell me more about the buttons. I did a Funny Playing IPS mod on a standard plastic GBC with aftermarket buttons and the one thing I hate about it is how spongy and difficult-to-press the buttons are.
I really like my brass buttons! They work really well. A lot of the time the mushy feeling is due to the membranes. Sometimes the aftermarket ones aren't as good as the originals. Try swapping them out with original ones if you have them. Let me know if that helps. Cheers!
A beautiful video about a beautiful little machine, subbed and liked. Man, what an awesome build, I’m admittedly jealous. Wish they made these cases for the Advance SP, which is my favorite variant of the gameboy.
Dude! Where was this video yesterday?!? After watching all of your videos about the different GBC screen options I resigned myself to having to settle for the drop in screen option (39 mm width) and the $5 Mini USB charging board. I ordered everything last night!
Oh man sorry to hear that Joe! All the other screen are by no means bad, they are all excellent! Each have their strengths and weaknesses. I think you will be happy no matter what. Cheers dude and good luck on the install!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks! After looking at all of the items in your build for this video, I'm realizing it would be a pricey project. For my build, the screen, battery and charging board puts me at about $63 (including shipping). Trying to keep this on a budget! Thanks for your response and you're excellent videos. They are extremely helpful! Keep up the great work!
Wow that GBC is worth the money I'd say. Did you happen to get in on the pre-order for the Funnyplaying IPS for the Gameboy pocket? I can't wait till I get mine. An IPS on the pocket has always been on my wishlist.
ooohhh very nice! not as pricey as i thought it would be.now if someone would do a kit like this for a gba cm3 pi build that would be great!!! keep up the hard work tito
Got a CM3 build in the works. Just need to wrangle up all the parts. Some are on long lead production cycle, so don't know when that video will be made. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions I have a gpi case but find it's a little small.i love the form factor of the original Gameboy advance but the prices are just crazy
That's awesome, I really like the look of the GPI! I actually was able to get a Boxy Pixel CM3 shell, just waiting for the next production run of the Circuit Shield from Kite! Cheers dude!
Love your vids, Tito! This is vital info I can't get as clearly elsewhere, and it's helping build a good mod for a gift. One question though: does the IPS screen have any dropped frames or tearing?
Thank you Albylion! I havent noticed any really, there may be a small hiccup here and there but nothing too distracting. Cheers dude and best of luck on the build, sounds like a really nice gift!
I picked up a current revision GBA shell and haven’t been happy with it. There were several blemishes on the black finish that I had to clean up. He also increased the tolerances around the screen lens so there’s a 2mm gap around the IPS lens. There’s also a notch in the shell around the gap that’s going to let dust in. Contacted Nick, from Boxypixel, and he said due to manufacturing inconsistencies with the glass lenses he chose to side with caution and increased the tolerances so that all lenses fit.... I get that, I just wish he made his own so it doesn’t look as bad as it currently does.
Sorry to hear that Corey. I've had pretty good luck with my Boxy Pixel products. I think we just need to understand that Boxy Pixel is a pretty boutique company with a niche market. His products continue to get better, but as a small company I think we need to except that not all products will be 100% perfect. Cheers buddy!
Loving the handheld series. I have my og GBA and a 100SP, but Ive been looking for more power and better features for emulating. Not to request here, but your suggested modern powerful (capable of at least PS1) handheld would be greatly appreciated. Also considering quality functionality and reliability etc. That would be awesome. New to the channel, but pretty cool! Also Im catchin either Cali or Philly off that accent.
Awesome picture production, awesome presentation and awesome mod. Two more cons of the mod in my opinion are: 1. No placeholder for the sticker 2. Side charging. Seems a bit annoying. Keep the good work man. You def deserve more subs.
Hi Tito! You have nice tools to work properly in everything you do. Love the background of your studio. I subscribe right now! I'm going to mod my old GBC with the help of your video tutorials.
Me gustó mucho la modificación, lo tendré mente ya que ya tengo el mod con esa pantalla. Y sobre la calidad de tus vídeos es fantástica, trabajo en esto así que lo digo con propiedad. Saludos
Is it possible to do this mod by just using the ips funny playing lcd with flex cable without using the boxy pixel Aluminum case, while also using the battery mod? I pretty much want everything besides the Aluminum case. I love this mod but want a custom case
Hello, Quick question Tito, the battery can it be used on an ips shell instead? I already got my materials before watching this metal shell mod! Anywho, great content as always cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I’ve got a funny playing IPS screen here, just waiting on the white shell/screen w gold font to come in! I will work on it this weekend.
This looked really cool. I still prefer the plastic for the nostalgic color and feel, but my IPS mod is in the mail and I'm considering modding the shell and getting the type c port and battery.
Haha, I’ve actually been thinking about building my own keyboard. It’s really hard to source the exact components that I want so I’m holding off for now. I really want mech keyboard. Currently using an Apple keyboard. Cheers buddy!
Bruh, Dragon Warrior 3 on GBC... love the mod, and I literally only looked up GBC mods because I specifically want to one day play that game properly back-lit
This is beautiful. Glad to subscribe to your channel. Great timing just got myself a gbpocket and would love to do some modifications. Thanks for such great videos.
Man I love those shells, I wanted to ask about if you think the gb micro shells are worth the install or wait till there might be something better cause I have an old beat up one that I was thinking of re shelling
really nice video,i have a FunnyPlaying DMG GB,i just saw your video to know how to switch retro pixel mode, really helpful!! thank you!!,and one more question, the FunnyPlaying DMG GB screen size is 44X48.5mm,do you know this GBC and GBP screen size? thx a lot!!
Great videos, thanks so much for sharing. I have potentially a dumb question - I have a really hard time cutting kapton tape. The tape I got is crazy strong and adheres to any razor blade or scissors I use. Plus I get fingerprints all over it when I do it. Any tips for dealing with kapton?
Thank you Mr. Bawk! No such thing as a dumb question. I think that just the nature of kapton tape. I have the same issues. I also get finger prints all over it. I think this is perfectly normal. The more you deal with the kapton tape, the better you will become at handling it. I hope that helps a little. Cheers!
Would the USB C board and LiPo fit into a plastic GBC shell with some modding? I like the look of the Mcwill mini usb solution but.. USB-C everything 😅
Is it possible to use this housing with double A batteries and the original LCD? I think it's a slick housing, but I don't have the money for all the parts at once, and I don't want to leave my GBC open while I wait for parts.
Hey Lasky great question! Unfortunately the metal boxy pixel shell is not compatible with AA batteries because there is not battery door, it needs to have the lithium polymer battery and charging PCB installed. I do believe this kit is compatible with the original LCD, but you will need a 3D printed bracket so that it fits into the shell. I would double check the boxy pixel website, he has a lot of great information on there that should clear things up. I hope this helps answer your questions. Best of luck! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah I just saw the lack of door. Well I do hope to see what I can do. However in the mean time I'm going to install an AGS screen that I have into an AGB. So wish me luck, because my hands jitter a lot when working with small things like this.
So I am currently going through my own process of doing this to my old Color, ive connected the battery and when i went to test the screen, it is on but extremely dim. Though when I turn it off, it flashes for a moment and I can see that the backlight is working. Do you have any advice on how to remedy this issue?
Amazing video. I was just wondering though... is there any mod to show when battery life is getting low. (So you know when to plug it in) before losing a saved game.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not 100% sure but I think the battery indicator light on the gameboy still works. I think it’ll start to dim once the battery is low. The nice thing is that you can plug it in while playing just in case. Cheer buddy!
I actually just recently got Benn Venn's Aioli drop in LCD kit for the GBC. I haven't looked at it yet so, apologies I can yet answer your question. I am sure they will be quite similar but Benn Venn kits tend to be very power efficient. Not sure how the generic kits are in comparison. Perhaps one day I will get around to reviewing Benn Venn Aioli kit for the GBC. I haven't used any Jelly Bellys Customs products yet, but I hear great things about them, so again apologies, I can't speak to that. Cheers buddy!
Question. So My Life in gaming just did a video on this subject and mentioned that you lent him a gameboy with the best feeling and best responsive buttons, may I ask how you achieved this on an IPS modified gameboy advance, and gameboy color? is there a specific vendor to purchase the membranes, buttons and casing from?
Great question Lion Heart (love the name)! I find using the OEM Nintendo buttons and membranes to be the best option. I used the OEM membranes in the Game Boy color with brass buttons (from Boxy Pixel), as seen in the MLiG video. For the GBA SP, I actually used an after market shell and aftermarket buttons and membranes, they all came with the pre-milled shell I got from Retro Modding. I hope this helps answer your questions! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions It does help thanks! but it's also kind of bad news as it means there are no good 3rd party providers yet for those parts, which happen to be the most common parts to fail first, I'd have to look for near-new gameboys to modify in order to have the best. oh well, thanks for the info, maybe someone some day will take on the task to create AAA replacement parts for gameboy color/advance.
Haha, that would be awesome to manufacture great membranes! In my experience some aftermarket ones are good and some are really bad. I’d have to say in general I’ve been pretty happy with retro modding membranes, but I think part of it has to do with console we’re talking about. I think sp membranes are probably easier to produce than a gbc for example because of the style of membrane. Cheers dude!
Nice video! I plan to mod a gbc with the funnyplaying ips screen eventualy. Was the lens you installed at the end a lens made specificaly for the ips screen or a normal sized one? Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions That's cool! By the way, did you notice any screen ghosting when playing games with an ips screen? I heard that was a problem with gbc and gba screen mods.
If there is ghosting, it’s a very small amount. I don’t really notice it when I play. To me the over all benefits of the kit greatly outweigh any of the negatives. Cheers Telrac!
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah I did both of my ips builds a month ago silver boxy pixel gbc and blue boxy pixel gba your videos are awesome you deserve more subs
Love the Videos man, started watching a few days ago and cant stop. I noticed you sometime show your 3D printer in use. What brand is it and do you recommend a certain model? I am thinking about purchasing one soon. Any help would appreciated. Thanks!!!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man. Can you do an affiliate link so you can make some money on it. I just bought the circuit board holder through your link, received and used it already. Think makes working on boards so much easier!
Can it link to other gameboy color? i mean, the mod changes the game link port for a usb-C port... looks like you can't be able to use the game boy printer anymore... not as perfect as it looks. Just asking
The link port is still there and it works! You can still use the Game Boy Printer and connect to other Game Boys! The USB-C is only for charging the internal battery. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Cheers!
That's a great question. I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it but I imagine it is going to be really hindered by the touch sensor. If you really want the IR functionality, I would recommend not installing the sensor. I actually find that the default brightness is plenty bright. Cheers!
You don’t need a custom shell, but it makes the process a whole lot easier. Modding the shell is quite challenging. HHL sell some great cheaper customs shells for this mod. Cheers!
Great question! In my video I’m actually using the boxy pixel shell which does a pretty good job at keeping the lcd in place. Are you also using a boxy pixel shell?
Macho Nacho Productions Yea I’m using the latest boxypixel shell. When it’s all assembled my screen has a slight angle to it. Like it’s crooked to the body of the gameboy.
Macho Nacho Productions thanks I reached out to him, and he gave me some pointers keeping it held down with kapton tape and some foam. It’s perfectly aligned now.
Thank you Justin! That’s a really good question. I’m not sure since I’ve only done the IPs mod with a boxy pixel kit and rechargeable lithium battery. I think it’d be very reasonable. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions Cool! Been watching your videos trying to figure out what screen I want to drop in my GBC. I'm comfortable soldering & trimming so I will probably be going the funnyplaying (or comparable clone) IPS screen route as I love the clarity/quality of image you get from them. Maybe be worth doing a video on a regular GBC console for someone wanting to just do the IPS mod only and running some benchmarks on the battery life for AA batteries vs rechargeable lipo batteries etc. Thanks again!
@@MachoNachoProductions Also, just found this drop in kit that looks super simple. Worth checking out. console5.com/store/modern-ips-lcd-upgrade-kit-for-nintendo-game-boy-color-gbc.html
That’s true! I would recommend the IPS kit hands down. I think your really like it. And the battery life I’m sure will be more than adequate. Best of luck dude!
Where can I get a glass lens for the ips screen for the GBC? I bought a foil one from jelly belly and it doesn’t fit. It’s too small for the ips screen. I thought it was the correct size. Oops lol 🤦🏽♂️
A normal original size glass screen lens should fit the IPS panel. It sounds like you got a custom lens for the older TFT lcd mods like the benn venn/McWill/Midwest embedded. Just a normal glass screen lens is what you need. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Hey man, awesome video! I’m going to attempt this exact mod at some point. I have most of the materials already, but I was wondering if it’s possible to include a pam8302a amp somewhere as well. Is there any extra space in the shell?
Perhaps a dab of hot glue may work. Nice thing about hot glue is that it’s removable. I think that’s what I would do. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Best of luck!! Cheers!
Great vid. I built one a couple of months back with the V2 Funnyplaying kit and an Atomic Purple GBC. Only issue is it has a bit of screen tearing but otherwise it's great!
That’s awesome dude! Yeah screen tearing is a bit of an issue but it’s supposedly way better than the V1. I heard that (the V1) had a lot of screen tearing issues. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yeah I don't know if I was sent a GBC V1 by mistake or if it's still an issue with GBC V2 but hopefully if there's a V3 it's corrected. GBA V2 has no screen tearing for me =)
Perhaps I should do a video running some test on how long these batteries last! Unfortunately, I don't know currently. Sorry for not being helpful. Cheers!
