The M3 looks so much better and if you really care about track times, you can always improve the brakes and tighten the gap. Personally, I couldn't care less, I just love the sound of that V8.
The more you start looking around, the more you keep coming back to an M3. Just ticks so many boxes. Good to see Ben indulging his techy side and sharing thoughts through history
@@BenCollinsDrives I'm a bit upset that there was no mention of the E46 M3 GTR, as actually being the first M3 with a V8, but that one is such an unicorn, that I'm hardly surprised, despite that, it's one absolutely beautiful piece of engineering and it was the predecessor of the M3 GTS.

The shot of the E92 sideways on a track is absolutely iconic. The M4 is a waggy tailed monster, both driven properly as intended, no collectables in this video. Great video
The e46 vs e92 comments are absolutely spot on, Ben! Glad to hear that opinion voiced openly. Having owned an e46 CS and an e90 in the past and it was night and day between them. Even compared to the "sharper" CS, the standard e90 was the sharper tool - measurably more composed and predictable at speed and over rough B roads.

As a former E46 Comp owner, THANK YOU for your words about that car. Nobody else is saying it and everyone looks at me like I’m an idiot for not liking mine. The newest gen M3/4 is by far my favorite. BMW nailed it in every way. Not liking the red pinstripes but they’re probably removable and if not I’d be happy with a base model as long as the paint is non-metallic.

Excellent description of how the E92 was behaving, so many cannot verbalise the feeling and sensation off driving a well set up car and come up with some statements with no detail such as ‘amazing front end bite’ but then don’t tell you how that changes with weight transfer. Stumbled across your channel, keep them coming and please don’t focus on new cars they are quite dull in my opinion, more retro car comparisons would be great. 111R vs 4C, Sapphire Cosworth vs Impreza Turbo 2000, 996 Carrera 2 vs 996 C4S, E46 M3 CSL vs F80/82 M3/M4, Fiat Coupe Turbo 20v vs Alfa GTV V6 3.0, Mk1 Mx5 1.6 (the import Eunos model with lsd) vs 205 gti 1.6 etc etc

My Dream Build is 120d converted E92 M3 running gear with the 1M Body Kit and a Carbon Roof and a Shorter Ratio Diff!! Seen a few of these Conversions ( Apparently M Division built one but was put in Ice as it would take away from the M3) and would make for the Best M car BMW should have built!!
This video is perfect. Ben's a one man Top Gear show, would someone give him a fully funded car show already? Can you imagine him with a couple of mates doing car travel challenges and such? I loved the joke of the Stig being silent, but getting to know Ben through these videos, I think of all the times on Top Gear it would have been great to hear his thoughts on a car he'd taken round the circuit rather than some quick hearsay from the presenters. I'm also going to echo some other comments, thank you for showing the whole laps. The drifting at the end looked amazing. And honestly, I still love the Tango M3, even with it's ugly bars and bolt on looking spoiler, it's so sharp looking.

Now that’s what I call a review! Two points of improvement from me: 1) When doing the full lap I think we’d all prefer for there to be no background music 2) A full lap of drifting from the same perspective as the timed lap would be great Keep it up 🫡
Appreciate the feedback. First lap had no music, second lap had a bit of music - to keep things spicy. Didn't do a full lap drifting! The first set of corners are the best for it (rest of the circuit is much faster, not good for initiating slides), so we sessioned that first section. Also, we had 30 minutes to film the drifting segment so captured what we could...

Good video but would have loved to see the E46 M3 CSL in there also as a comparison being a CSL too. Totally different to the standard E46 M3 in my opinion and whilst I fully expect the new CSL to be faster I don’t think it would have been totally humiliated. And this E46 did have a lower centre of gravity due to being the 1st M3 to don a carbon roof ! Oh and thanks again for your tuition on the Top Gear track many years ago when I took part in the show !
Ben you have such a natural style of presenting...really really easy and enjoyable to watch, also helps that you actually know what you are talking about when it comes to driving unlike some major youtubers out there. Great cinematography in this video as well. Hope that this channel gets the views that it deserves.
Such great stuff, Ben. I know you've got to get tired of hearing this over and over, but this reminds me so much of the good old days of Top Gear automotive journalism when the boys would have head-to-head car shootouts. I really miss those days, and you're doing very well to keep that torch burning in its purest form.

I still have my humble 99 E36 M3 (Anniversary Edition) here in Australia Ben. It's nothing compared to these new giants of power and speed, but I still love it. Owned it for just over 15 years now.
Considering the CSL is the guts of a second quicker to 60mph and therefore gaining that second on the first straight, it shows how good the GTS is everywhere else on the track to only lose 2seconds on the total lap!!

My dad used to have E92 M3 with ECU tuned to 459 BHP, manual box and to this day he still struggles to cope with the fact he sold it. Now they cost more than what he sold it for... This car has a special place in my heart too

While the M4 might be the better car, my choice would be the M3. It still looks gorgeous to date while the M4 has a front end only a mother could love.

What a fantastic video. So technical and highly appreciated. I’ve had an E46 M3 in the past and it is true, it did have a higher centre of gravity which did compromise the handling but I never really thought about that as it was still a fantastic GT with an amazing engine. Can't believe I had to go looking for this channel after I spotted you in a vid with someone else. What the hell's wrong with RU-vids algorithm all the tripe it recommends me, and it missed The bloody Stig. Keep on sending it Ben, been a fan for a while now.
These videos by Ben are so special because he has such an articulate way of communicating his vast knowledge and experience. Most of the guys out there doing this stuff are just journos who in the main don’t know cars like Ben and Jason Plato who race them all the time. When these guys talk seriously about cars you just wanna listen and learn.
Great video! Ben Collins makes a fantastic presenter. Interesting the newer car was still quite a lot faster even though the older car had the Cup tyres. The only complaint I have is for the editor, the drone footage was very blurry and not colour graded to the same colours as the rest of the video. Looking forward to seeing more !
As an owner of thoroughly modified E92 N54 335i with 500hp plus & 450 lb-ft plus of torque now for over a decade. I can say one thing that steering feel/feedback is what I miss the most. When I have driven the previous F8x gen M4. It felt a lot more numb and isolated. I haven’t driven the new G8x M4/M3. But have auto crossed the M440i and even the i4 M50 and found them both isolated and numb when it came to steering feel/feedback in comparison. I know that the newer 3/4 series cars are more roomy, more high tech, more safer, more comfortable, more powerful, more cornering ability, more overall performance straight line wise or braking. And they are much better daily drivers. But they are lacking the steering feel/feedback and they are very isolated places to be. I just wish the steering feel and feedback was better in newer versions. If a driver can’t get excited by engine noise & note, steering feel/feedback, shifting of gears, then you might as well just buy a powerful EV car and be done.

Great video and driving! Impressive time for the CSL given that it's on the normal "sport tire", which is also unfortunate since the CSL chassis/suspension has been developed around the Cup 2 R. Without the Cup 2 R it's not really possible load the suspension and lean on the front axle (and rear axle) to get full use of the different kinematics. Also, on the CSL the traction control works differently (based on M4 GT4). Level 6-10 is for track use where 6 and 7 is for dry with tires in operating temperature. Level 6-10 is also optimized for the Cup 2 R tires. Nevertheless, two very cool and capable cars!
I feel a better comparison would be the E92 GTS vs the F82 GTS. I would imagine CSL follows a little bit of a different ethos to the GTS and you can recreate that comparison but with the F82 instead it would be very interesting. Great video and always a joy to see you in action.
