Really enjoyed this. You guys make great arguments for the ones you like and don't like. There's really a reason to love all these movies.

Thank you! And absolutely agree. Although its fun to debate the merits (and demerits) of the movies, I think they're all fun to watch. And I would never make fun of anyone who thinks my least favorite is their favorite. It's almost like debating ice cream flavors...If someone likes vanilla over chocolate, more power to em!

This was quite an enjoyable listen. Really loved all the presenters style, enthusiasm, and positivity. You all clearly have great respect for each other and each other's opinions, which made the commentary flow naturally and entertaining. Also liked how for even the worst films on the list you found positive qualities and vice versa. Well done all!

This is my third time coming back to rewatch this podcast, I love the diversity of opinion here! The discussion is so rich, as a lover of both Bond and Film, I hope to one day myself engage in a session as absorbing and refreshing as this. Please do more of these with possibly other franchises! I'm sure I'll come back a 4th time (and more) in the future!
@RetroCarsForever
@RetroCarsForever 5 лет назад
Wow, thanks! If you ever do something like this, please send it my way, would love to listen. I think the key to a fun discussion like this is three things- 1. Getting people together who are all respectful, mostly positive, fun, and passionate about whatever they're talking about 2. Making sure everyone's general thoughts are prepared beforehand so it doesn't run too long (you can hear they we all had pages of notes to reference) 3. Editing after recording- I actually went through and trimmed about an hour from this podcast in total (repeated information, long pauses, etc) so that it flowed nicely and kept the energy up. Would love to do this with another franchise, but tough to figure out something this vast that we all care so much about. Star Trek? Star Wars? Mission Impossible? Not sure!
@shmatts5269
@shmatts5269 5 лет назад
As you say, it's difficult to find something you all enjoy and that's additionally extensive enough. What makes this particular discussion so engaging is you're all Bond to the bone, and there are 25 entries to go through! Resulting in great and dynamic discussion. I would suggest that the franchises you enjoy, as evidenced by your marathons, best befitting of the Ultimate Cast treatment would probably be Mission Impossible, first and foremost. Its only downside; the limited number of installments. Star trek, Star Wars, the MCU, Pixar films all have the quantity nailed down, it's whether you're fan enough. It has to be said, I too am a huge Doctor Who fan, I can't help but endorse the idea of seeing you discuss; Doctors... Seasons or dare I say it; Episodes? ;) The other route to consider is directors with generally good portfolios: Tarantino, Spielberg, Nolan, Wright. However, I would currently push for Mission Impossible as a start. It might not be varied enough, but doing so would serve as a nice springboard that hopefully leads to further podcasts. I'd certainly tune in to watch them! Anyone with the determination to do those marathons clearly has the temperament for meaningful and creative discussion, I'd tune into that any day, and more than once of course. Please, let me know if and what you consider! You know, I do indeed have a close group of film friends, I might very well do something with them sometime! You've put a terrible idea in my head!

as someone who saw his first bond film in the theatre when it was released and that was the first bond film ever, 'dr. no', the series should have gone from 'diamonds are forever' straight to 'the living daylights'...that works as a bond continuity...the roger moore years were kind of embarrassing, especially if you read the fleming novels....and to put 'moonraker' and 'octopussy' over 'licence to kill' and 'tomorrow never dies' is just not right....
@RetroCarsForever
@RetroCarsForever 4 года назад
I dont we judged the Bond films solely on how closely they hew to the source material. I think 007 is much like Batman or Doctor Who...There is no ONE "correct" interpretation of the character and his world, and I would argue that the changes made throughout its long history of what makes it feel fresh and interesting throughout the decades.
@rocky-o

@@RetroCarsForever i understand what you're saying, but the moore years were just too silly...he's supposed to be a spy, not a spoof....even during 'goldeneye', a pierce movie i truly love, i cringe when he's driving the tank...that's definitely leftover moore type of bond...

Okay! Here it goes! (cracks knuckles) 1. From Russia With Love (Nearly flawless in my opinion and it helps owning the book too) 2. The Spy Who Loved Me (Appreciating this one more and more since Sir Roger's passing) 3. Goldeneye (A solid action film that is probably helped by the N64 game of the same name) 4. Goldfinger (A bit overrated but I still enjoy this one from time to time) 5. Casino Royale (One of the few Bond films I've seen in theaters but a great way to reboot the franchise) 6. Skyfall (A well balanced film and willing to overlook a few plot holes. Came close to tears) 7. For Your Eyes Only (A film of Roger's that also keeps getting better. Love the exploding car too) 8. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (The most important Bond film of all. The ending never gets easier) 9. Licence to Kill (A polarizing film that has many lovers and haters. Wish they didn't cut the film though) 10. Thunderball (You like or hate it. I enjoy it. Last Connery film to blow me out of the water...not literally) 11. Octopussy (This film soared up thanks to your countdown. It may still go up a few spots yet) 12. Dr. No (A great start but for some reason I think the next few Connery did were better. Still respectable) 13. The Man With the Golden Gun (Rag on me for this but I liked the build-up to Moore and Lee a lot) 14. Moonraker (I shouldn't like this film but I find it enjoyable. A guilty pleasure for sure) 15. The Living Daylights (A solid film but it seems to get lost in the shuffle. A little underrated I guess) 16. Live and Let Die (Time hasn't aged the best on this one but I still like it...even with J.W. Pepper too) 17. You Only Live Twice (Let down a bit but this is still a decent film. Donald is Blofeld to me) 18. The World is Not Enough (I admire the choices they took with this even though it falls a little short) 19. Tomorrow Never Dies (Hated the villain but he has grown on me. One of the best Bond girls too) 20. Never Say Never Again (Surreal Bond film but decent. Also saw this before Thunderball) 21. Spectre (Deceptive film. Not terrible but lacking in a few areas. Craig can't go out like this) 22. Die Another Day (Near the bottom but it has a few moments that make the film passable) 23.. Diamonds are Forever (Passable but quite flawed. How is NSNA better than this?) 24. A View to a Kill (Has a few decent qualities but I wonder how a different Bond actor would have done) 25. Quantum of Solace (The toughest Bond film to appreciate. They rushed the script on this one) And as an added bonus, my favorite Bonds: 1. Connery (The best actor portraying Bond but he deviated a bit from the original source material) 2. Craig (Probably the closest to the novel and with such passion and respect for the role. Do #5 please) 3. Moore (He may be ridiculous at times but I find his films to be quite enjoyable. Miss him) 4. Dalton (He was a dark Bond but I felt he was ahead of his time) 5. Brosnan (Lower of the list but it wasn't his fault. It came down to the material) 6. Lazenby (What could have been if he had done more than one film! Did all right I suppose)
@jamescarr3983
@jamescarr3983 7 лет назад
My ranking 24. Quantum of solace ( After Daniel Craig created a terrific millennial bond in casino royale, this fiasco of a follow-up damn near left him for dead. The theme song "another way to die" sucks. Thank goodness skyfall rode to the rescue. I blame Marc foster who does not know what action is and made this seem absurd. Bond is almost like Jason Bourne in this, leaping across rooftops in Bolivia and Haiti to get some MI6 agents. This loses its plot fast and is stupid. ) 23. Licence to kill ( Boredom. Licence to kill doesn't even feel like a bond film. The villain was good but the way bond chased him was absurd. And then no bond for six years. ) 22. The living daylights ( After Roger Moore's jokey films it came as a relief when Timothy dalton was new bond. He knew how to act and he looked good as bond. But he was dull as dirt. The Russian general is crap and the film is utterly humorous. Too much jokiness for Roger Moore was bad, but with none its deadly. ) 21. Tomorrow never dies ( Bond tries to stop World War III. Oh god. The video game was bad and this is considerably worse! ) 20. The world is not enough ( Denise Richards + Pierce Brosnan = No... ) 19. Goldeneye ( Pierce brosnan was crap in this... But the opening scene is awesome when he bungee-jumps into that Russian place. Sean bean is awesome! And Famke Janssen steals the show! It's also exciting when bond jumps into a plane and saves it. No Shakespeare, but that's a stunt. ) 18. Diamonds are forever ( After skipping OHMSS Sean Connery came back in with a $1.25 million salary. And despite Jill St. John and Lana Wood he looks bored. His worst. ) 17.
@Stealthborn
@Stealthborn 7 лет назад
Die Another Day to me was where things starting getting quite outrageous in terms of Bond. I wasn't the biggest fan of the invisible car (even though in real life that would be awesome), the wind surfing scene was a bit cringe worthy, the spoiler with Gustav Graves (not impossible but still out there) and Jinx kind of ruined the movie a bit (and I like Halle Berry in most of the things she's done). And yet despite all of that I still would watch the movie if it was on tv or something like that. It is a little bit of a guilty pleasure I suppose. The only real Bond film I have a dislike for is Quantum of Solace though I still think it is better than half of the films released today.

I stand by my ranking on Goldeneye (and I will admit it's Pierce's Best) and I hope I made my reasons clear enough. Although John actually articulated my problems with the plot and pacing probably better than I did! Maybe I was just too old at 18 coming Goldeneye unlike Bonds 1-16 where I was a kid and could embrace them all faults and all. Glad it saved the franchise but overrated.

18/17: call me a Bond snob but I don't include NSNA in my canon rankings haha nor do i consider CR 1954 either. While were at it CR 1967 I don't even consider a Bond film. So moving on, I at first didn't like LTK when I first saw it but it's grown on me. Timothy Dalton I believe is an amazing Bond but his supporting cast really is crapy B 80s actors. I love the ending though when Sanchez goes up in flames. I liked the Florida scenes but I just can't get over the horrible supporting cast which was unfortunate for Dalton. Sanchez home is awesome. Overall though it's an exciting action packed 80s police flick like Lethal Weapon, Miami Vice and Diehard. I do enjoy it a lot. I agree with you guys that it was ahead of its time. 16/15 ahhh Thunderball is my 2nd favorite Bond film of all time. Very underrated. It is the quintessential Bond. It has everything. Too much to say about how great this film is. I do agree I dislike the anticlimactic boat scene but has always been my top fave films since a kid. I love it's length and the score is phenomenal. The scene with largo and baccarat is legit. (good point in the revealing of Blofeld in Spectre agree 100%). It's the peak of Connerys Bond career. TB was the highest grossing Bond film adjusted for inflation until Skyfall. Tomorrow Never Dies: I like this film. I don't like the bond girl but i love the bad guy Elliot Carver. It's another cop drama from the 90s like lethal weapon and true lies and Rush Hour. Loved the car chase in the parking garage. Don't like the ending. Most Bond endings I don't like.

I love the LOVE for Moonraker in this video. It probably wouldn't make my top 4, but despite some silliness, the formula is nearly perfected. Cinematography is beautiful, locations great, action scenes are good, and women are beautiful. Moore has improved in the role, and is even better than he was in "Spy." Drax has this hilarious dryness which makes him fun. Drax's lines are unbelievable but a total kick, such as when he tells Bond that he has the "inevitability of an unloved season," whatever the hell that means. Not sure if I have that line correct, but I love that over the top dialogue. Putting Moonraker aside, I remember very clearly that Athena Stamos had For Your Eyes Only at #1 on her Commander Bond profile over a decade ago. Well, we all change our rankings.

Your video was very enjoyable to watch and I love hearing other Bond fan’s opinions. (yours are in parenthesis) I’m a 40+ year fan, I just did another rewatch of all the films and these are my ratings. 1. The Spy who loved me (1) Congratulations, you choose well! When I think Bond this movie and the next one come to mind, in fact these are two I recommend new Bond watchers to watch first. 2. From Russia With Love (5) This is the best Connery film, great pacing, nice locales, this is a solid spy thriller that proves that you don't need tons of action. 3. Skyfall (6) I think I overate this film because it's sandwiched between the worst films in the franchise QoS and Spectre 4. License to Kill (17) Dark, edgy, realistic. 5. Goldeneye (7) Tank scene, need I say more, ok Sean Bean, need more, a perfectly paced film and one of the coolest opening scenes of the series. 6. A View to a Kill (22) I get the faults of this film but each time I watch it I enjoy it more and more. This is a classic Bond movie, great opening scene and final scene, nice locales, menacing villain, awesome hench-woman, great pacing and it has two of the most intense scenes of any Bond Film in it. 7. Live and Let Die (11) This is a classic and being an introduction to Roger Moore it was beautifully crafted. It has one of the best boat chases ever filmed. 8. Thunderball (16) I think this Connery’s best acted film and the groundbreaking underwater sequences are awesome, plus the Vargas kill scene is the most classic kill in the franchise. 9. The world is Not Enough (20) This has some of the best action sequences in it, very well paced and has Brosnan's best acting. Never understood the hate for this film. 10. Dr. No (12) 11. Die Another Day (23) This first half of this film is the best of any Bond films and then it goes off the rails but it doesn’t deserve last place as most people put it. The CGI is limited and not really that bad for that era and if you accept the sci-fi concept it is a very fun film to watch. Plus it has Jinx, one of the best Bond girls ever and Miranda Frost, wow. 12. Octopussy (14) Is also a fun film, campy but it hits all the right plot points. I find that people who put it near the bottom usually say they are confused by the plot. 13. For Your Eyes Only (8) 14. Diamonds are Forever (19) This filmed nailed 1970’s Vegas and how over the top Vegas actually was back then. I also love the fact that Connery is just having a fun time (some claim he looks bored, no that would be YOLT) Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd were great henchmen. 15. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (3) Lazenby's wooden acting and constant over-dubbing of his voice get's irritating, slow in the middle, poor rear projection work. However it's a great Bond Story and beautifully shot. 16. The Living Daylights (13) This film has two distinct parts to it and it seems disjointed. 17. Goldfinger (4) I used to rate this higher but each rewatch it drops, It’s slow paced (golf isn’t exactly exciting), the plot holes are immense. It also suffers that it is sandwiched between FRWL (Connery’s best film) and TB (Connery’s best acting) 18. Casino Royale (2) This is a decent Action/super-hero movie, highly predictable, but it’s not bond, in fact it comes off as a anti-Bond film. Craig is a dumbed-down brutish Jason Borne/superhero action star with mental stability issues. He would never be able to pass the tests to be a 00 (I know they tried to gloss over this later). Just like Goldfinger's golf scene, poker for 30 minutes isn’t exactly exciting so let’s drug him (everyone saw that coming but it makes no sense). Don’t get me going on the stupid torture scene. I didn’t find much chemistry between Bond and Vesper, the instant love affair was unbelievable and her death was comically unrealistic. 19. Tomorrow Never Dies (15) 2nd worst villain in the franchise, overly long superhero action sequences that are not very bondesque (NOTE: helicopters don't fly like that). The plot, which was full of holes already, has aged terribly, no chemistry between Wai Lin and Bond, the stupid side plot of Paris and a dull ending. 20. You only live twice (9) I find this Connery’s worst, the plot was stupid, the scenes seemed hodge-podged together, the action was choppy. Little Nellie was unbelievable back then and even worse now. And the volcano lair - sheesh, this movie has not aged well. And it was just made to appease the huge Japanese fan base, hence why it spent so much being an advertisement for Japan - a boring sellout. 21. The Man with the Golden Gun (21) The worlds greatest assassin lures other tops assassins' to his carnival fun house with his midget henchman. Top that with the worst Bond girl, Mary Goodnight and this film fails. Christopher Lee was great. 22. Moonraker (10) Has the best acted scene by Roger Moore - the centrifuge scene. Other than that it is a stinker. 23. Spectre (18) Boring car chase, Blofeld is reincarnated but he is boring as hell and the plot twist which was ridiculous. Highly unrealistic action sequences. Craig acted just like he did in CR and QOS but that is very different than his character acted in SF so there is absolutely no continuity here, as if M never died. 24. Quantum of Solace (24) This is the only “F” Bond film, I actually walked out of the theater half-way through it. Worst villain, horrible editing, goofs galore, boring and utterly untenable plot, unrealistic action sequences, schizophrenic bond girl.

Diamonds are Forever (This film was old and tired like Sean Connery!) 25. Die Another Day (This film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. And that Madonna theme song is a travesty. Her cameo isn't much better. The only scene that's barely worth my time is the fight scene between Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike. Great discussion, but "Octopussy" wss never considered " a bad Bond." It was well received by critics and handedly beat Never Say Never Again at the box office (it played well throughout the summer of 1983). Most naysayers tend to be in the anti-Roger Moore camp who lazily think that Bond in a clown outfit proves Sir Roger's silliness in the role. It's actually great storytelling.
@RetroCarsForever
@RetroCarsForever 4 месяца назад
While Octopussy was reasonably well received when it came out, I think in later years it was derided as a too-silly Moore adventure. In recent years I think the general consensus has started to bring it back to good favor.

I didn't use nearly the scrutiny that you all did, my list is a lot more subjective and emotional: 25. On Her Majesty's Secret Service: without Lazenby, top-10. With... "The name's Bond, mate... Bruce Bond." A plank would have been better, so long as it came from Britain. 24. Never Say Never Again: yes, Connery, but all the familiar characters seem like parodies. Too goofy even for a Bond film 23. Die Another Day: I don't hate it, but not a great way to send off Brosnan. That CGI... Puke. 22. The Man With The Golden Gun: recently re-watched, liked it better than I remember. Still my least favorite Moore. 21. Diamonds Are Forever: there's something so unromantic and uncool about this one, really cheap feeling. 20. Live And Let Die: I like it, but Moore hadn't perfected the post-Connery Bond yet. 19. Dr. No: a simple, generic, fun Bond. 18. A View To A Kill: yes, Moore is like 80 years old, but a good note for him to bow out on. Perfectly mid-tier. 17. Octopussy: another one that I like better than I remember. This one continues to climb my list. 16. Quantum Of Solace: on its own, this movie is, well, less than stellar. I almost exclusively watch it while marathoning the Craig movies, so I enjoy it more and thus ranks higher than it probably should. 15. The World Is Not Enough: a definite feel-good Bond movie for me. As a child, Brosnan was my first exposure to Bond as a cinematic character. 14. Moonraker: love the locations and cinematography, goes a bit overboard at times for me. Still quite enjoyable. 13. License To Kill: I never understood the hate for Dalton, I think it's a shame he didn't get a couple more films in the role. An exciting film. 12. Tomorrow Never Dies: awesome action, great Bond girl, another feel-good Brosnan flick for me. 11. Goldfinger: Of course, a classic, I just find the last half a trifle boring. Call the police. 10. Thunderball: ranked so high because I think it's one of the most beautiful Bond films ever, slow and stupid plot be damned. 9. The Spy Who Loved Me: stone cold classic, but again a Bond film where I like the first half better. 8. The Living Daylights: yes, a Dalton film in my top 10. I find this one endlessly entertaining, and Dalton is too cool. 007. Spectre: everyone hates this one, and I can't disagree with their reasoning. Problem is, I enjoy this film an unreasonable amount. 6. For Your Eyes Only: peak Moore, in my opinion. Gorgeous Bond girl, sweet car, awesome villain-turned-ally... Love it. 5. GoldenEye: Brosnan seemed made for the role. An absolute classic, I'm always in the mood to watch it. 4. From Russia With Love: a movie whose flaws don't even register with me, such is my love for it. 3. Skyfall: I never hide the fact that I'm a Craig fan, but beyond that, this one is a film I can watch on repeat all day. Fantastic. 2. You Only Live Twice: shouldn't be this high, but it's my favorite Connery Bond. I'd say he's reached pinnacle cool cat. The climax is worth my ranking alone. 1. Casino Royale: the first Bond movie I saw in theaters, and the Bond movie I've watched the most. I don't know why, but this one does it for me more than any other. Pure escapist fantasy, and that Aston... Oof. I would eagerly watch any film in the series, though. I truly enjoy them all, just to varying degrees, of course. I probably won't agree with myself in a week, but here's where I stand as of this writing. Also, if I tried to be objective, my list would be wildly different.

Great to see Spy Who Loved Me at #1. It deserves it. Many critics and purists rank it high but seem to have a problem ranking it in the top 2 or 3....perhaps because its not a Connery film or dark and gritty enough. This film is the best of everything and Moore is terrific. I also think Octopussy should have been top 5..I love it but it sometimes gets ranked low for just a minute or two of corny slapstick in a two hour plus film that is unique and a great thrill ride.

Really enjoying listening to this - thank you. I can't class myself as a super-fan like your erudite panel but I have watched them all, although not for many years. I'll have to try and remedy that! I'd just like to champion Spectre and diss Skyfall. I think Skyfall is one of the most overrated Bond films. I have never been a fan of the increasingly large role taken by the office staff of MI6 in the movies. None of them are field operatives, nor are they meant to be. I really, really disliked the climax of Skyfall which someone I read astutely likened to James Bond meets Home Alone. As much as I loved Casino Royale (possibly my no. 1) I was beginning to grow weary of Craig's brooding Bond, always with a chip on his shoulder, going rogue, breaking into M's house - for goodness sake! As if! Spectre was like a breath of fresh air. Here was Craig's Bond finally reaching maturity, he looked more at ease in the role, more balanced in character. And the movie was a beautifully crafted homage to many of the great parts of Bond movies past, which were subtly evoked and not in an obvious of ham-fisted manner. It still has faults (office staff acting as field operatives, more insubordination from 007, too tight suits!) but i love all of the other parts so much - the sweep of Bond's journey, the excellent Bond women, the beauty of the cinematography, some absolutely outstanding action sequences including what I am certain is the best fist fight in any Bond film - that i can easily overlook these. And i like Madeleine Swann and find her connection with Bond convincing (although perhaps not drive off into the sunset together material). I think it deserves a ranking far, far higher on your list.

Hi Jason! Sorry this is late, but that's an excellent defense of Spectre. Can't say I really disagree...I think it's just valuing different things over the others. You def mention the things that work about Spectre for me. And YES I am so over Bond going rogue/M16 regulars having big roles in the plot. But I think until they recast those parts with lesser known actors, that's going to be the way it is for some time.

Sorry, couldn't remember your name, but I agree 100%. I especially love how Bond takes advantage of Sanchez' code of honor so to speak. I actually don't think that the violence is too much. 😀 Did Athena not rate both Live and Let Die and even Goldfinger higher than "Licence", even as both of aforemetioned films have women not fully consenting on-screen, in LALD by trickery and in Goldfinger by brute force (in LTK, there is no on-screen violation, and the remark by the lead henchman of Sanchez, well, that could have been just bluster, to provoke Felix Leiter) ? Even by the standards of today, the level of violence portrayed in "Licence" is noteworthy, arguably even surpassing those of the Craig films. To each one's own.

@@RetroCarsForever yeah I’ve tried to love it. I think that it had potential to be great and I’m not one of the people who think that Lazenby is terrible; the last scene shows that he is a capable actor. I actually think the overall plot is overrated, and that Tracey’s relationship with bond isn’t fleshed out enough. Plus Draco for some reason really annoys me. I feel like if it dragged less in the middle, had a better told love story , and built up the characters a bit more then it would definitely make for a top five Bond movie.

Putting License to Kill dead last makes no sense to me, objectively I would have it in my top 5. After having to put up with Moonraker, which is arguably the weakest (certainly one of) Bond film to date, For Your Eyes Only which is just middle of the road and samey, Octopussy which although I like more that most people, is still typically Moore cheesiness, Never Say Never Again which I don’t even consider a true Bond movie, A View To A Kill where Grandpa Moore is just too ridiculous it renders the rest of the movie worthless, The Living Daylights then started the change that was needed but still features a lot of the same tropes... I LOVE the grittiness to A License to Kill. It’s not about the Russians, there’s no submarines, no nuclear war heads, no plan to take over the world. It is simply Bond on a destructive rogue mission where revenge is his only reasoning. It offered the change which should have come much sooner into the saga!

I hear ya...I dig LTK (and put it further up my list than anyone), but also get why someone would put it dead last. I think the MAIN reason John put it there was it just doesn't look/feel like a Bond movie, or take him to that "special place" that all the other 007 films do for him. Its definitely different than the rest of the series, for better or for worse! And the beauty of OUR rankings (vs just about everyone elses) is that by having five of us vs just one, it can "balance out" those strikingly different ratings (LTK ended up higher up than most of the movies you mentioned in the final rankings).

My ranking and why each film has the corresponding spot: *#27 Licence To Kill:* Immediately kicking it off with a very controversial choice. Nowadays the most overrated film in the series. The brutality goes way too far. It feels like the filmmakers deliberately want to try to disgust the audience. Sent me straight to nightmares on the first watch. Talisa Soto is a bad actress. *#26 Casino Royale 1967:* This movie felt boring to me. Nothing else. Just like in 1983, 2 Bond films were released here. And this duel right here is easily won by "You Only Live Twice". *#25 Never Say Never Again:* This movie shouldn‘t have happened. Sean Connery did not deserve that bad. Wasted effort. The best thing here is without a doubt Fatima Blush. *#24 Quantum Of Solace:* The premise on Wikipedia is quite convincing and sounds very interesting. But the way it is executed in the film is absolutely terrible. There are a lot of useless and uninteresting back stories you don‘t care about. The editing is terrible. *#23 Casino Royale 1954* Exactly the same thing as the 1967 version. Definitely a film that shouldn‘t have been made. *#22 The Man With The Golden Gun:* This film has an excellent and memorable villain and also a very memorable henchman. The rest is completely forgettable and boring. Such a great villain did not deserve such a film. *#21 Die Another Day:* This one has terrible CGI that was already aged at the time of release. What really lifts this film up for me are the 2 Bond girls Jinx and Miranda Frost. I love them both. Otherwise unrealistic plot and a terrible villain. *#20 From Russia With Love:* Yep. That‘s extremely controversial. My main issue is the bad score as well as the entire train scene, which is way too long and I quickly get bored. *#19 Tomorrow Never Dies:* Maybe this is controversial again. This one is filled with great action but also with a weak villain and a bad plot that I don‘t really like. This movie‘s Bond girl is my all-time favourite though. Wai Lin is nothing but fantastic. *#18 Moonraker:* It‘s a full-on kids movie overfilled with way too many gags. But there are 2 scenes that are quite dark and disturbing. The centrifuge and the dogs. Although lookwise, this is without a doubt the best film in the series! It‘s filled up with beautiful cinematography and fantastic filmsets that are popping on one after the other. *#17 Skyfall:* Yet again a controversial choice. Bond dying and then living on pills like a zombie is not my thing. The villain is my favourite in the series but doesn‘t have enough screen time. I also didn‘t like to see M dying. Pretty overrated movie. *#16 A View To A Kill:* Along with Silva, Zorin is my favourite villain in the series. He really lifts this film up along with May Day. Roger Moore is really getting too old and he should have been done with Octopussy. I like the plot of this movie though. *#15 Dr. No:* It is a good way to start a franchise. But if this film would have been made in the 70s or the 80s it wouldn‘t have worked. The villain is great and Sean Connery is amazing. *#14 Diamonds Are Forever:* I think this movie is a bit underrated even though I still rank it low. Sean Connery looks very bored and has aged a lot since "You Only Live Twice". Although this movie features one of the best henchmen of the series with Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd. Charles Gray is terribly miscast as Blofeld. Bad plot and cheap effects. Comedy, title song and soundtrack are good though. *#13 Thunderball:* This movie somewhat feels darker than its 3 predecessors. The underwater scenes are so well made even though there are a lot of them. But that makes this movie independent and different. It gives me a summer feeling and I really like it. Also a bit underrated. *#12 The World Is Not Enough:* This movie is quite underrated. Bond beeing double crossed by Electra is a well written plot. Electra is period a fantastic villain! The score and the title song are awesome too! Renard is a great henchman as well. *#11 SPECTRE:* Now that is what I call underrated! Most fans say that this doesn‘t feel like a Bond film. Well this is a lame, lazy and dumb excuse! This movie has a lot of things that you would excpect from a Bond film ranging from a classic henchman through Blofeld, his white cat, a great villain lair all the way to humor! Unfairly hated movie. I like the step brother thing but it was indeed done with the wrong character. It shouldn‘t have been done with Blofeld. *#10 The Spy Who Loved Me:* The ski jump is the most incredible stunt of the series! This film makes you proud to be a Bond fan! Roger Moore is at his best here! Barbara Bach is an underrated Bond girl and Stromberg and underrated villain! Great title song and soundtrack make this film really amazing! *#9 Goldfinger:* To some of of you this film might still be ranked pretty low. But I feel like this is the perfect spot to where it belongs! This is the all-time classic, the film that invented everything that you would expect from all the future Bond films! A part of it has been shot in Switzerland, my home country! I‘ve been to all the Swiss locations of Goldfinger! Everything is memorable! The villain, the henchman, the girl, the plot, the title song, the soundtrack, everything! This is truly a 24-carat masterpiece. *#8 You Only Live Twice:* That‘s my favourite Connery film! Along with Moonraker the film with the best looks! The filmsets and the areal shots of Japan are absolutely incredible! Pure 60s fantasy! Great soundtrack yet again! We‘re introduced to Blofeld. The Japanese atmosphere is done extremely well and brilliantly make this feel like a vacation film. It‘s also one of the best in the series in terms of escapism. *#7 GoldenEye:* This is the film with my favourite pre-title sequence! The dam jump was also made in Ticino, Switzerland! Xenya Onatopp is an incredible henchwoman with too little screen time. Alec is only an average villain though. The cinematography is great! The soundtrack is absolutely underrated! It‘s fantastic! Plot wise it‘s over the top but yet so entertaining and that‘s why this was the last true classic film before the release of "SPECTRE". All of the films in between were not really filled with classic Bond stuff. *#6 Live And Let Die:* What puts this flick so high is mainly the soundtrack! We also have an excellent top 3 worthy title song! Music wise, "Live And Let Die" is without a doubt the king of the series! The villains are good and memorable! Tee Hee is a great henchman and Solitaire an equally great main girl! The blaxploitation theme also make this an independent, different and fantastic entry! Great, great film. *#5 The Living Daylights:* We‘ve now reached what I think are the very, very, very best films in the franchise! The Living Daylights has been my all-time favourite for a while! As you can see it barely changed! Apart from the main villain, everything is done absolutely right and make this one an incredible flick! Kara Milovy is surely an underrated Bond girl! The locations are great! Everything is just great. *#4 For Your Eyes Only:* We‘ve been through my favourite villain and girl, this is my favourite title song! Sheena Easton is absolutely mesmarizing. Otherwise this film has a great girl too. Great cinematography is present. Thank god they went easier on the humor after the way overdone Moonraker. Roger Moore is getting the age but is still very good! This film brilliantly proves it! The only weak thing are perhaps the villains. Otherwise, absolutely brilliant entry. *#3 On Her Majesty‘s Secret Service:* Almost reached the top! A major part of this film has been made all over my home country. And of course, I gotta love this film for mainly this reason. I also went to all the Swiss locations of this film. I‘m so proud that it is considered as one of the best in the series to many people. I‘m also a huge fan of this movie and I‘m proud of it. George Lazenby had only one film but at least this one film was absolutely fantastic. *#2 Casino Royale 2006:* Every Bond actor to date had a strong start to the series! But Daniel Craig absolutely had the best start! It‘s a ridiculously entertaining and awesome film all the way through from A to Z with mainly only 2 flaws. The first one being a complicated plot that is quite hard to follow and the second one being that this movie did not include Q and Moneypenny. That‘s about it. One of my top 10 all-time favourite movies ever. *#1 Octopussy:* Here we are! My all-time favourite Bond film! The name of the title song fits it! This is truly an all-time high in the franchise! The filmmakers did absolutely everything right in this film! We have a great villain, dangerous henchmen, a realistic and contemporary plot, an interesting main girl, exotic locations, awesome stunts, a good title song, a great pre-title sequence, funny humor and a great score. To me, this represents every Bond movie‘s fantasy. You can‘t possibly add more classic stuff to a Bond film in the way that Octopussy did it. It‘s by far the most underrated film in the series. My love for this flick is beyond unreal! This movie is truly an unforgettable rollercoaster ride!

Hm, had NSNA been viewed between "Diamonds" and LALD, the group score might well have been lower (perhaps much lower), if for no other reason than sheer monotony. Either that or the participants of this "Bondathon" had been rather unswayed by the identity of the forces behind it (many other YTers are to this day outright dismissive of this film solely or mainly because EON did not produce it).
@RetroCarsForever
@RetroCarsForever 3 года назад
I don’t think any of us are personally swayed by EONs involvement or not. However, they clearly are better at crafting a Bond movie. We actually held a party before this where a bunch of us watched Octopussy and NSNA back to back. While both play well to a crowd, there’s a level of polish to the production of EON Bond films that NSNA clearly lacks.

Decided to revisit this ranking. Here's my ranking with reasons. I'm going to rank the official ones only: 24. Die Another Day: What else can honestly be said about this one that hasn't already been said? Absolute absurd plot. Even for Bond standards. Jinx is the worst Bond girl for me and the most obnoxious. All of the villains are terrible. Gustav Graves feels like a 60s Batman villain more than a modern day Bond villain. Zao sucks. Miranda Frost is meh. I don't understand why there is a henchman in this called Mr Kil. What's next? Urma Badguy? The Madonna song is shit but it's not the worst Bond song for me. Brosnan gives his worst performance as Bond here. He is just like Connery was in You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever. Going through the motions and not giving a crap. Shame that this terrible film was his swansong. 23. Diamonds Are Forever: Easily Connerys weakest. The dude looks way out of shape in this one and bored out of his mind. Even more so than he was in You Only Live Twice. The film is a downright shlocky and shitty insult to the timeless classic known as On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Charles Gray is a bad Blofeld. Not as terrible as Christoph Waltz though. 22: A View to a Kill: A fascinatingly and bizarrely bad film. Moore has definitely outstayed his welcome here. No wonder even he himself said that he shouldn't have been in the movie. Christopher Walken just about saves it. The Duran Duran theme song is fucking dope too!!!! Dance into the fire baby!!!! 21: Spectre: I am pretty much with you guys on everything that you all said about this one. Athena saying that "Sam Smith is having puberty problems" certainly is the best way to sum up why Writings on the Wall is a terrible song. And don't even get me started on Brofeld. Why did they even do that? Did they honestly think that that was a good idea? I don't understand it. 20: The Man With the Golden Gun: Agree with Brad (or at least I think he said it) with everyone being dicks to one another in this for no reason. Especially Roger Moore himself. Definetly Moore's worst performance as Bond. 19: Quantum of Solace: Not as terrible as people make it out to be but not exactly a good film either. The abysmal editing just stops me from enjoying it tbh. 18: The World is Not Enough: A mixed bag. The 2nd Bond film that I watched when I was a kid funnily enough. Has some good stuff in it like Brosnans performance (his best Bond performance imo), Desmond Llewellyn's send off as Q, the entire pre title sequence, the criminally underrated Garbage theme song and the torture chair sequence but the film also has a lot of goofy shit in it too like the Parahawks and a lot of stupid throwaway characters like Dr Molly Warmflash, Mr Bullion and Gabor. John Cleese's inclusion in this also feels strange. Denise Richards is not in any way convincing as a nuclear scientist. 17: Moonraker: Great Ken Adams set design. Great John Barry score. One of his best if you ask me. Well shot. Dull rehash of the TSWLM plot. Blatant rip off of Star Wars and other 70s Sci fi films. The character of Jaws was completely destroyed in this film. Whatever threat and fear that he had in the previous Bond film is gone. Why do they give Jaws a midget girlfriend in this for goodness sakes? Are they trying to get rid of any dignity for this character? Unpopular opinion but the Shirley Bassey song is her worst Bond song. The amount of times she repeats the words "moon" and "love" in during the song is so silly you would swear that George Lucas wrote it. 16: You Only Live Twice: Feels more like a self indulgent style over substance travelogue of Japan more than a film with an actually good story and good characters. Connery looks like he is about to fall asleep in this. 15: Thunderball: A film that I used to hate but I now really like. Even though I still have some issues with it. 14: Live and Let Die: Tbh all of the blackexplotation stuff never really bothered me. People say that it's a blackexplotation film just because all of the villains are black but Bond's allies (Harold Strutter Snr and Quarrel Jr) are also black too. If anything the Live and Let Die book is more racist. I definitely do agree with the Solitaire stuff that most of you mentioned. That stuff bothers me too. 13: Dr No: A good film but a very vanilla one. The Monty Norman score is awful and is one of the worst Bond scores. 12: Tomorrow Never Dies: The first Bond film that I ever saw and the film that got me into the series. Yeah. I like this one and Elliot Carver rules!!!! Sue me!!!!!! 11: Octopussy: A lot more serious than people give it credit for. 10: For Your Eyes Only: Glad to see this one in your top ten. Moore's most underrated film as Bond. 9: The Living Daylights: Great performance by Dalton (my favourite Bond actor), great action set pieces, awesome theme song by A-ha (one of my all time fav Bond songs), a terrific score by John Barry and a pretty decent spy story. Even if it does get overly convoluted and confusing in the end. Whitaker and Koskov are lame villains. Kara is a mixed Bond girl for me. Saunders is one of my favourite Bond allies. I like how they give him a bit of an arc. 8: Goldfinger: A classic and iconic in every way. 7: The Spy Who Loved Me: Sir Rog at his very best. Nobody Does it Better. 6: On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Bond at his most human. Telly Savalas is my favourite Blofeld. Diana Rigg (RIP) is one of the very best Bond girls. 5: From Russia With Love: Hitchcockian Bond at his finest. The Bond VS Red Grant brutal and intense train fight still holds up remarkably well today. 4: Licence to Kill: definetly disagree with a lot of you on this one. Dalton's superior Bond film with his own personal stamp on it. The Living Daylights was good but it did feel like it was still in Roger Moore territory a lot of the time rather than be its own original film. Robert Davi plays one of the very best Bond villains in Franz Sanchez. Carey Lowell plays a great Bond girl in Pam Bouvier. My only issues are the silly bar fight, all of the Wayne Newton stuff, the bizarrely overly happy ending and some of Dalton's Miami Vice fashion in this does leave a lot to be desired. 3: Goldeneye: I don't know what Bob was smoking putting this at number 21. An overall great film and honestly my number 1 favourite Bond film for a very long time. I agree with Brad on how it's the only Pierce Brosnan Bond film that starts strongly and ends strongly. My only real criticisms are with the incredibly distracting Eric Serra 90s score, a lot of Alec's storyline not adding up and making sense like some of you already mentioned and the BMW Z3 being horrendously wasted. I'm also not that invested in the Bond and Natalya romance. Even though Natalya is an awesome character and one of my all time favourite Bond girls, I feel that it just comes out of nowhere, just feels forced and brings the pacing to a bit of a halt. I was also never that mad about Boris either. The only weak link in an otherwise brilliant ensemble of villains. 2: Casino Royale: My number 2 but I can definetly see why most people would have this as their number 1. 1: Skyfall: This film really does a great job of delving deep into Bond's past a lot more than the other films do.

To each their own! For me personally, Bond is like Batman...There's a place for Adam West just as much as there's a place for Christian Bale. I'm happy that Bond can come in all flavors, and camp (if done right) doesn't bother me one bit.
@MysticSpoonAttack
@MysticSpoonAttack 7 лет назад
Right, exactly. And it's not that I don't like campy Bond, I have The Spy Who Loved Me in my top 5 and that also has plenty of campy moments, and Tomorrow Never Dies is actually my favorite of the Brosnan films despite its silly moments (if you're interested, here's my ranking: boxd .it/5Yf2). Moonraker doesn't do it for me because its plot is so far in the background, it goes from campy action setpiece to campy action setpiece but it's all so boring to me, and when it's not it's cringeworthy. Diamonds are Forever is ridiculously annoying (and / or annoyingly ridiculous), plus Bond has never looked so out of shape. You make a very good point that Moore's age is more of an issue in A View to a Kill because it's kind of creepy in that film, but Connery aged so distractingly much and gained so much weight between YOLT and DaF that, from an action standpoint, it bothers me more. Plus, Connery just seemed he didn't care in his last two EON films. He was pretty good in Never Say Never Again though (the movie, eh, not so much)!

@@RetroCarsForever Yes by recently I mean something like span of 10 years. The funny thing is I did not really mind Lazenby. He was not terrible but the script and storyline were. The first hour is just Bond falling in love with Tracy... Her father offers Bond his daughter like it was cow or whatever and people complain about Bond in Thunderball? I could watch some romantic movie instead. When the spy story starts it turns out to be really silly. I mean it is right up there with Moonraker! Then Bond sleeps with every girl he meets (the positive is he had to take of that atrocious costume they gave him) and thus the movie denies its own premise of Bond falling in love with Tracy. Few moments later he happens to run into her and falls in love with her again. Ok... There is also some kind of arty camerawork I did not like here and there. The beginning is like that and reminded me of that awful art western with Peter Fonda from the early 70's. I liked just the car chase and the skying scene but it was too little too late.
