Joel Turner changed my shot process and going on my third year of total control!! I did that drill early on of coming to full draw, pulled away from my face and WATCHED my hinge go to the click AND fire!! It was INTENSE but now it gives me a better understanding of what is happening with the hinge and now I can "SEE" the release moving in every single shot!!

Yep im very honest with myself snd i have had issues with target panic on and off for years. I always had to go back steps of the process. This year i said goong back steps and getting over it again long enough to hunt and then get back to target panic isn't good enough. I am going all the way back to the beginning and working through it until i get to where i need to be

What broke me was switching to a back tension release. After a few months with it, even today, 30+ years later, I cannot pick any release. The back tension release broke me of that. Today, most of those same releases are called hinges. That’s because lost don’t or can’t use one properly. You don’t turn it in your hand. You squeeze you shoulder blades together until it fires. No matter a index trigger or thumb trigger, I cannot punch one today, all thanks to a 2 finger Stan back tension release. Scary in the beginning, but worth it in the end.

A very important aspect of getting/ having anxiety IMO is NOT BEING in bow shooting shape. For whatever reason if you can’t easily? draw the bow and hold against the back wall as needed ( with control) you will be fighting the entire process. This will instantly lead to punching and drive by shooting. You will become accustomed to very quickly punching because you can’t hold the draw and aim as needed. Sure, there are those physically able to draw heavy poundage but still hammer that trigger for all the reasons Joel explains. When learning how to overcome TP it may be necessary to reduce your DW so you CAN control the process. And you will need to have a release PROPERLY setup. So many have trigger releases that CAN NOT be adjusted short enough to set them up right. Those cheap barrel designs rarely will shorten enough. Get a trigger that is on an adjustable strap that can be set to hook your finger deeply over the trigger and you learn to pull thru the shot- not punch the trigger. Getting these two things done will help tremendously with anxiety BECAUSE YOU ARE IN CONTROL!

Agreed, best intro yet Dan. Hilarious. I do have a question though. I love the concept of a surprise release and clearly it works and you guys know what you’re talking about. My question is what about a hunting situation? Sometimes I need to know and “time” when the arrow is released. You may have a window to shoot through or a second or two to take the shot. Does this still apply?
@BigChedMeister
@BigChedMeister 4 месяца назад
That is the beauty of a closed loop. We can speed up the process and still have a surprise break on the shot (a faster "Here. We. Go"). There is a difference between speeding up the shot process and punching the trigger. This is no different from hunting with a firearm. The closed loop theory is that we are able to control the shot through a 'pure' mechanical process - taking out as much human influence to the system as possible. If we know when the shot will break, we will instinctively tense to control the bow/firearm. This tensing/torquing will cause a disturbance to the system potentially causing accuracy issues. Through practice, you can master your shot sequence and understand the average timing that it takes for the surprise break. If you are trying to shoot through a small gap with critical timing, high chance are you will punch the trigger - this is the challenge of hunting and only having few opportunities. practice does not make perfect... Only PERFECT practice makes perfect.
@johnarcher9480
@johnarcher9480 2 месяца назад
This is a better description of a surprise release than really target panic. I agree a surprise release is a great tool in curing TP, but I don’t believe its an aversion to an explosion. Its an aversion to imperfection, and as alluded to, trying to aim and shoot at the same time.
@The-Jokes-on-You
@The-Jokes-on-You 4 месяца назад
I recommend people using a release like Scott's Longhorn Hex. Its been out for a while & is almost like a strange hybrid of a trigger/hinge release. Its very adjustable, gives you 3 finger contact and allows you to rest them on the lever minimizing the chance of punching. Once your fingers make contact just slowly squeeze. Its a great & overlooked release that helps the punching problem IMO.

Great Information and content. I am struggling with an issue of when I aim, for some reason, I am rock steady 4-6" below the target. I feel like I am lifting up a cinder block to get my pins up that last 4" and cant hold it there so I end up smashing my thumb release on the way by. Is this target panic or something else like a misaligned peep or a form issue? Any replies would be appreciated.
@ajbholsters2035
@ajbholsters2035 4 месяца назад
I had a similar issue until I started extending my bow shoulder out and "pushing" toward the target while I hold against the back wall. Most people collapse or tuck in their bow shoulder and it relaxes the muscles that help hold the bow up. Now my pin just sits and floats around my intended impact point.

Detailed Summary Section 1 00:00:02 The speaker discusses the mental and physical aspects of archery, emphasizing the importance of mental concentration and control. They talk about the challenge of controlling the shot and how it can impact one's overall decision-making. They also address the issue of target panic and the need to consciously override the central nervous system. The speaker emphasizes the importance of mental reps in archery and the detrimental effects of punching the trigger. They also provide guidance on diagnosing and addressing target panic and anxiety in archery. ► Watch this video section Section 2 00:06:35 The speaker discusses the importance of proper trigger control in archery, emphasizing the need for a closed loop control system where the trigger pressure is applied slowly and the release is a surprise. They explain that shooting with an open loop control system, where the trigger pressure is too fast to stop or modify, can lead to poor shooting habits and ultimately hinder performance, especially in high-pressure situations like hunting. The speaker recommends videoing oneself to analyze the wrist movement during the release and emphasizes the importance of controlling one's thoughts and voice during the shooting process. They stress the need for proper strategy and instruction in order to improve shooting performance. ► Watch this video section Section 3 00:11:10 In this part of the video, the speaker emphasizes the importance of concentrating on the perfect shot and getting practice with a bow for concentration. They discuss different categories of release aids and specifically focus on tension-activated releases, cautioning that if set too lightly, it can deceive the shooter. The speaker advises setting the release aid with more tension to help the shooter focus on the movement and avoid distractions. They stress the need for self-diagnosis and honesty in improving shooting skills. The video also mentions a website for courses and an upcoming event in 2024. Additionally, the speaker provides tips for using an index finger release, emphasizing the importance of proper finger placement and pressure on the trigger. ► Watch this video section Section 4 00:15:58 In this part of the video, the speaker discusses the importance of maintaining control over the release when shooting a bow. They emphasize the need to focus on the release and trigger finger to avoid pre-ignition movements that can affect the point of impact. The speaker suggests a drill where the archer draws the bow, focuses on the release, and talks themselves through the trigger pull to understand the feeling of releasing the arrow. They highlight the importance of visualizing the trigger pressure increase and maintaining focus on the release to improve control and accuracy. ► Watch this video section

Ok. When shooting with a strap release, my hand never slips through it and can't do it. Shooting in this way is very inaccurate, thrust control is also needed so that the shot occurs at 75% of the maximum, as Dudley says, and this is not a surprise shot in any way. If you want to shoot like that, get used to the fact that you will always shoot past the target. Maybe you will start getting there someday, but no one knows how long it will take.

No such thing…PAN'IC, noun A sudden fright; particularly, a sudden fright without real cause, or terror inspired by a trifling cause or misapprehension of danger; as, the troops were seized with a panic; they fled in a panic. if there is a such thing as target panic, the problem is way before the bow, it has something to do with the mental stability with an individual. Is a person terrified of archery, arrows, a bow, a release, a paper target, a sight pin? Is anyone really terrify with these things in reality? No no no no. Should a person all of a sudden become terribly frightened about shooting a paper target with a simple bow and arrow the answer is no. I believe that there is no doubt people need help with form, making sure that they are setting their bows up correctly, and making sure they are coached properly, but I hear this target panic in archery today more than any other subject, and if something is put before a man enough in his eyes and ears, he suddenly becomes captivated by it. The Bible says as a man thinketh in his heart …so is he, I wouldn’t think too much on this subject I would enjoy archery in the natural ability that God has given one. The great archers of yesterday and bowhunters never dwelt on this, they built on perfecting, their approach to the game in which they were wanting to harvest. And if problems arose in their archery shooting, they personally identified the problem and work through it again to become better. One good thing about coaching is that it recognizes bad habits, a lot of archers may struggle more so with bad habits than anything else. Joel turner is a great teacher. He’s watched and watched and put a formula together off his observations which are good.

@jwild5360 4 месяца назад
@@jrhunt414 they all know what their shot timing is. If they know their shot timing their brain knows when the release is going to fire. Its inevitable. Most all the big names have came out and said in recent years they ain’t shooting “back tension” they ain’t shooting “surprise” shots. Plenty videos of guys like Levi floating around saying that. He goes as far to say “we all figured it out awhile ago” speaking of his peers on the circuit. The only way to be shooting a surprise release is by having zero shot timing. NOBODY making a living at this game has zero shot timing. You close yours eyes bend over and touch your toes 20 thousand times you will know exactly when your fingers will touch your toes. Even with your eyes closed just purely on timing alone. Brain is way to powerful not to know when a release will fire that you’ve shot 100s of thousands of arrows through. I shoot a closed circuit controlled shot myself. I know when the arrow is leaving.
