1 - Scout the Buffet (observe before grabbing) 2 - Skip salads (not worth the money) 3 - Focus on seafood and crab legs (most bang for your buck) 4 - Do not get fried rice or lo mein noodles (fills you up too fast) 5 - Don't eat anything with broccoli (It's not real Chinese food) 6 - Avoid General Tso's chicken (terribly unhealthy) 7 - Drink tea not soda 8 - Eat for the fun of it 9 - Put down the egg drop soup (not worth the money) 10 - Don't bother with non-meat dishes Also, food is sometimes saved from dinner to tomorrow's lunch SO, avoid going to a buffet early in the day to try to avoid yesterday's leftovers.

#1 your doing it wrong at a chinese buffet:You paid $20.00-$30.00. Good god, I've been to ones that goes all the way down to $9.00-$10.00 and that's the fully loaded dinner, hibachi/sushi set up.

Serenitie3 Not true. Never heard of Myrtle Beach, but I live in an ultimate tourist destination, Miami, and Chinese buffets can be as cheap as $5. The more expensive ones, say $15-20, are Japanese seafoof buffets.

+MickyAvStickyHands THANK YOU! I watch these OTGW and Strictly Dumpling videos for information and tips and to learn about new things I might want to try, and I do try to keep an open mind - but more and more, I feel like I'm being judged and condemned by food snobs. Which leaves me less and less inclined to pay attention to their videos.
@shinyam75
@shinyam75 8 лет назад
+MickyAvStickyHands Exactly. Not everyone is the same. When you go to a buffet, you naturally eat what you like the most, and that's how you get your money's worth. Getting your money's worth by loading up on the most expensive items and enjoying the foods you like the most are two different things.
@ItsJustMilkISwear
@ItsJustMilkISwear 8 лет назад
+MickyAvStickyHands the things they said are objectively true. you can still like and eat things like fried rice and noodles that fill you up, but if you do it at a buffet you're wasting your money, because you could have just bought the fried rice and noodles at a restaurant and ate them and been full for less than the price of the buffet in most cases. this is a guide on how to get the most out of your money at a buffet, not a guide on what food you like the most at the buffet. the idea is that you can go to a buffet and eat unlimited crab or even lobster at high end places, that would cost you a ton of money if you had ordered it all at a restaurant. the video has good tips that not everyone knows, and it's not the bible so you don't need to abide by all 10 commandments of the youtube video you just watched.
@shinyam75
@shinyam75 8 лет назад
Yes, what you say is mainly true. However, part of the buffet experience is being able to eat many dishes that you like, not just one. Sure, you can order a plate of noodles for less if you like noodles, but it would be way too expensive to order the 10 other dishes you like as well. At a buffet, you can sample all of your favourite dishes.

I have no idea if anyone's ever done this before, but if you're ever at a Chinese buffet, and if they have these sugary biscuits, get some of those. then, just take a little bowl or something and fill it with this red sauce. it's sweet and kind of tangy, so it might be sweet and sour sauce ... I don't really remember. it's been awhile since I've been to a Chinese buffet. but anyway, I usually take the biscuits and dip them in it and eat that as a kind of dessert. this is probably another one of those things that I'm doing wrong, but it tastes soooo good.

In my experience, any good chef would tell you to never make fried rice with fresh rice unless you run out of leftover rice. Fresh rice has too much moisture to stirfry properly. The dryer leftover rice makes a much better fried rice. Absorb the soy sauce and not get soggy. Think of it like tiny sponges. ;-)
@tytyq2
@tytyq2 9 лет назад
Emely Corniel I am a Chinese I go to eat Chinese food in Chinese restaurant too, rice over night is ok as long as they are not the left over from what people eat on the table, I eat fried rice in Chinese restaurants all the time. Oil can not be changed for a month, if oil being cooked too long, the oil would get burnt and cause a big fire, in a very busy restaurant usually oil have to be changed within 3 days, in a very slow restaurant oil usually being changed within a week, that all depend on how much they cook, I worked in American hotel Holiday Inn before, a lot of time cooking oil being changed in 5-7 days. I am a Chinese I love broccoli, in a Chinese restaurant broccoli is cooked by the Chinese way, very delicious.

As a chef i can say that it is not only Chinese buffets that reuse leftover food from the day before. Almost all buffets are using left over food, not all but most. But there are reasons for it. First of, if we don't do this we will throw away lots of food which is a shame. And it is just leftovers, so they should be perfectly fine to eat... that is if the chefs are competent in what they are doing. Second thing is money, if we can reuse the leftover food from the week instead of throwing it away, we will save quiet a lot of money to, food aint cheap.
@Stubert222
@Stubert222 6 лет назад
If people come in and just eat the crab legs , or prawns then othee food gets neglected.... i agree sometimes you need to be able to reuse stuff due to this. Frankly if you ask me anyone who loads up on only one item at a buffet misses the point of a buffey all together and also makes ot harder for the restaurant to present a balanced buffey choice.

I pay about $35 for my family of three (2 adults and a 4 yr old) when we go to the Chinese buffet for dinner (and it's a good one with sushi and hibachi), less if we go at lunch time. Even if we pay the extra $5 per person for the all you can eat crab legs on the weekends it still is under $50.

When I go to a Chinese buffet, I eat what I like, and do not worry about being judged. For me money is not what it's about, its the quality of my dining experience. Oh and did you know most of the so-called Chinese food served here in America is actually a fusion of Southern Asian and French cooking. Early Americans thought that all Asians were Chinese.

I haven't been to China Town in years but I'm sure there are a lot of them .. (Chicago) There are quite a few in the nw burbs where it can be $25-35 for the weekend dinners. Which would include sometimes lobster, crab legs, prime rib, and just about any type of shrimp you can think of .... as well as several other types of seafood. I'll usually crab a small bowl of hot n sour soup , then jump into several plates of the various seafoods .. Maybe a little rice at the end ...

I dont think you understand, you can buy as much as you want at stores and fill up faster with those, but then your just eating things that are not chinese. In fact you could get that stuff at hometown buffet and not be judged, then do it. But not in a Chinese restaurant, your be getting judgmental looks. and pluse why come to a Chinese restaurant I mean buffet when I could just go to an American restaurant and get that stuff that are chinese.

My tactics, pick a chinese buffet with actual sushi. Nigiri, rolls, handrolls that all use salmon, tuna, eel and other high quality fish. I won't mention the Buffet I go to in California, but all I do is eat the sushi. I get plate after plate full of sushi till I am wicked stuffed. By the end of the night, I ate well over 60 dollars worth of sushi and only paid 30 bucks. I can also spend the same amount and just go to all you can eat sushi bar, but the tips bring the price up to around 40 bucks. Well worth it in my opinion, cause at the sushi bar I can get all the specialty rolls I want, all the nigiri I want and other various rolls. Do your homework on sushi prices, you will never pay per roll again once you learn the all you can eat sushi restaurants. Location is key. No restaurant tips from me for Orange County, I keep them to myself. These places are jewels, super clean, super friendly staff and excellent food. At the end of the night, you go home stuffed and ate over 100 dollars worth of sushi for 40 bucks. When I go with a friend, just imagine 2 large guys eating till they can't eat no more. We highly believe we were the reason for a restaurant closing in Brea,CA. Can't say for sure. We just know we went there every Wednesday, ate 100's of dollars of sushi for 20 bucks each and by the third or fourth week they closed the restaurant and changed to just a bar. Sad day for us at the time, but we found other jewels. Happy Buffet eating. :)

They also have a hot bar with some standard things (some extra neat stuff) but I have learned from a lot of experience there to go for the gold and stick almost with the sushi. If I go there on a weekday for the lunch buffet, I can get unlimited sushi (and hot bar) for about thirteen bucks. It is heavenly. Glad to know there are other places out there like this :).

Hey Mike, sorry to tell you that you're partially wrong about the very last (secret) tip. If you have had very good fried rice, chances are the rice was actually cooked the day before. There are lots of higher end restaurants that actually precook rice and store them in the fridge to be used the next day for their fried rice.

here are my tips... 1.) first round is light. one or two of the things you WANT to eat. This allows you to decide is its good or if you need to pass on that particular item. one day the crab ragoon is delicious then the next visit it is a bad batch. no sense piling your plate with bad food. 2.) for shelled foods like shrimp or crab legs or anything you have to work at to get to the edible parts remove the shell of all of the legs prior to eating. This will give more time for you to continuously eat before your body gets the full feeling. 3.) I have made it a habit of eating shrimp (the ones chilling on the ice) with the shell. The tail also provides a natural handle. 4.) learn to pile your plate(s) while you are up at the buffet. pick the smaller items first, work your way around the edge then fill in the middle. repeat on the next level and so on and so forth. 5.) you only have so much room in your stomach so its good to know your limits and always strive to expand said limits... I hope these tips are useful to someone out there!!

Everytime I plan on going to a chinese beffet I make sure I workout a lot before hand. Not only does this make me able to eat more, but it also helps me digest the food much easier. So I dont get an upset stomach from eating a lot. I am not sure if this works for others, but it works for me. :D thanks for the info btw. I didnt know some of that stuff. The beffet here only serves caffeinated drinks so their customers would eat less, because of the caffeine so I dont drink anything when I go there. However if they serve lemonade then you must get that. Its better than tea because it helps you digest food much better and it stimulates your appetite. So you eat more. Stay away from the caffeine drinks!!! Caffeine is known to make people not want to eat. That is why some buffets only serve drinks with caffeine in it... Its also good to drink a glass of water before you go there. It may make you eat less, but it will help with digesting the food. Well thats all I know...

The ultimate tip to a chinese buffet... Go for the lunch. Usually $15 and you pretty much have the same menu items there from lunch to dinner anyways.
@JennyEverywhere
@JennyEverywhere 9 лет назад
My favorite trick with a chinese buffet is, find the one that's in its "Grand Opening". Chinese buffets and restaurants suffer from what I call "Six Month Syndrome". They put all of their money and effort into that first six months that they're open. The food will be the best quality, cooked by people they're paying very well, who are new to that restaurant and haven't developed any problems yet. After six months, the cashflow problems start, because they've been shoveling cash into the place hoping to build a clientele. Now the scrimping starts, and the first things to go are -- those attentive servers who come often to replenish your tea (they get their hours cut back and some get fired), the really good cook they're paying enough to buy a Tesla (if he hasn't already quit because of some real or imagined slight), and the food quality will slide. The oil gets changed less often, the grills cleaned less often or less well, and the grease traps are let slide longer. They don't buy that prime cut of meat, they buy the next grade down. They switch the fried chicken dishes like General Tso's (sorry, I love it so much I make it at home now) from the white meat Americans love to dark meat, because it's cheaper. Frankly, I think the dark meat tastes better. They also cut the meat smaller and put more breading around it. After one year, they have lost so many good cooks, they have their third-string cooks on as the first string. The food is edible and sometimes even good, but it's uneven and sometimes disappointing. Those steam trays aren't getting changed out as often, and some of the food on the line is, for buffet food, very old. You have trouble finding your server because she's probably out back having a cigarette, or sitting in a disused section of the restaurant texting her boyfriend. She doesn't care what you think, and a smile is the furthest thing from her face. At a year and a half, the cashflow has gotten so bad, they can't afford to pay anyone anymore. They may have gotten some health department fines for a dirty kitchen, because that Greek cook can't be bothered to clean up after himself. Yeah, they've gone so far downhill on cooks, they're hiring rejects from the gyros house down the street. He has no clue how to cook Chinese food, but he's winging it from a cookbook. So the place closes "for renovations". Yeah, the renovation is to find a new crew that has money to reopen the restaurant "under new management". This starts the cycle over again. Meanwhile, the people who have been leaving the restaurant all this time are working at the new restaurant six blocks over that's still in month two. Go there now.
@BadMelody.
@BadMelody. 8 лет назад
Lol, great logic here. Eat for fun... but don't eat or drink these things cause you will be judged by people who believe you should "eat for fun."
@MechanicalMaven

The very best strategy is to fill up a styrofoam plate with the good stuff like skewered chicken, peanut chicken, mushrooms and so on and take it home. They weigh it and you pay substantially less than if you eat it in the restaurant. At our local eatery I get $10 worth of stuff that's good for 2 to 3 meals. I make my own tea and egg drop soup.

Mike Hunt yeah. that's how second day food is consumed. the other people are not eating directly out of the serving tray. just using a giant serving spoon. I totally understand your distrust of other human beings and/or consuming one day old food. but I've yet to see anyone shove their bare hand into get some rice or just plop a chair down and start eating at the serving tray. I have eaten meals I've saved for over a week at times from the fridge. I just use my senses, and if it looks and smells good and the first bite taste fine. I'm all over a week old food item from the fridge. let alone one day old food. I don't think it's of the highest standard a restaurant can hold but it does not surprise me a buffet of all food serving establishments would practice saving good food from one day to the next. it's in thier interest to have the freshest items available and if they put something out that doesn't please the customers taste, made fresh or yesterday. that's on them.

I always try to sit facing the buffet, if it's a large buffet with lots of tables I sit where I can watch for my favorite items. This way I can hit the table right after the steamed dumplings come out, or they just refreshed that tray of seafood. This also lets you get a good idea of whether this is a well maintained buffet (fresh safe food) or if you will be needing to stop for some antacids on the way home, because you see if they pull the old trays or just leave it there with some fresh stuff put on top and you can see how often they are checking the trays and replacing them in general too.

If everyone followed your advise and ate only the most expensive items on the buffet and everyone got more value than they paid for... how would the owner pay the bills, the employees, or even make any profit. They would be out of business in three months, the employees would be out of jobs and you'd be looking for a new restaurant. We should take care of one another, and not only think of ourselves. In my City, the Buffets all cost around $12, eating a pound of crab legs you say cost $12 per pound would wipe them out!

@andrewsarahdevries7587
@andrewsarahdevries7587 6 лет назад
Chasity Allen The Mandarin serves a plethora of vaguely “Chinese” food (Chinese-American style), along with your typical salad bar, seafood bar, sushi bar, and dessert bar. The salad bar alone is the size of an average buffet. They may also feature specials like steak and King Crab legs. When we were there they also had a candy floss station for the kids.

I think that good thing about Chinese buffet is that is it there many different meals options and you can mix for yourself what you like. I got their advice. Anyways I never eaten there rice or noodles and if I did it wa just a trace with comparison to other meals. For me personally beef, chicken and pork meals judt because of protein.

John Boykins the stuff on the buffet is white people food, they usually eat some soup or something. Then again those refilling the buffet were Hispanic and the restaurant was probably owned by Vietnamese people but still.

I go to NewNew Chinese place in Addison, Tx, and I don't scout, I just walk in with the mission, "I'm gonna eat until I can't eat no more!", starting with the first dish, I pile up everything on one dish, if it won't fit on one plate, I'll eat that, then go back a second time for all the things I couldn't fit on the first plate! Chinese Food is my favorite, but one time I went to a dim sum, sumthing, and ordered the easiest thing on the menu, which was a chicken leg, and I kid you not, they brought out a real chicken leg, with toes and everything; I never been so scared of my lunch in all my life! Also, I used to work in a Chinese restaurant, loved it, they do not pay much, but they treat you like family, and that's more important than money! God Bless

That actually sounds fairly cheap for an authentic Chinese buffet. X'D If you want crap buffets like Hometown or Golden Corral, that's $9-10. Besides, several whole plates of seafood for 20 bucks. Why not, right?

LOL! Yep. I was taught all this by the tender age of 8. :) Eating at a Chinese buffet isn't about the dining experience: it's a war. :D The only other thing I was taught that wasn't mentioned was, take a small quantity of EVERY dish (except the ones mentioned in the video) on the first pass. That way, you can say you've tried every dish, and you know what the best things are to go back for to fill up on. The only exception, of course, is the seafood. Get as many of those as you possibly can to start with, even if you have to share it with the rest of your table. Also, no soup. Not just the egg drop soup. NO soup. Period. Finally, you should plan on *at least* 3 trips to the buffet (including dessert), so pace accordingly. I would love to see OTFW do a video for all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant strategies as well!
