jayson smith nah pete did some pretty innovative stuff Cousy wasn’t thinkin of. That stuff unlike Cousy got him criticized because of the frequent turnovers caused by his teammates not expecting the pass to be soo accurate 😂

@@sbruce9949 Not even close. Pete played when Division 1 freshman's weren't allowed to play varsity basketball or football. So he only played three varsity seasons (89 games) in college yet scored 3667 points, the most of any player EVER in the NCAA! Jimmer had 2599 points in four seasons (139 games) . Pete averaged 44.2 points a game while Jimmer averaged only 18.7 ppg. In Pete's four years in college, he ranged from 43.6 ppg as a freshman to a high of 44.5 ppg as a senior (very consistent). Jimmer ranged from 7.0 ppg as a freshman to 28.9 ppg as a senior. Jimmer had 296 3-point field goals in his four years. Pete had zero, because there was no 3-point rule when he played. But he did take many shots in 3-point range. Somebody went back and reviewed every one of his college games to see how many he actually took and concluded that if the rule was in effect back then, he would have actually averaged between 52 and 54 points per game his entire college career!! Jimmer scored over 50 points one time in college (52). Pete scored over 50 points ten times including three times over 60 (64, 66, 69)! Jimmer was one of the best college players of his era. Pete was the greatest offensive college player of all-time!

@bruce song Pete was an amazing dribbler too. The Harlem Globetrotters actually wanted him to join their team but he chose to go to the NBA. Do a RU-vid search on "Pete Maravich dribbling." He developed amazing ball handling skills shown in several of these videos! You might also want to watch ESPN sportscentury biography of Pete Maravich. He had a sad untimely death that shocked everybody and a defect in his heart that made his top-level play even more amazing!

Let’s no forget no shot clock. If he played with a 3 point line and a shot clock experts say he would have averaged 55-60. Best scorer in college. No one even in discussion.

It was LSU coach Dale Brown who went back and analyzed Pistol’s shooting and determined he would’ve averaged 57 a game. Pete was coached at LSU by his dad, Press Maravich. Keep in mind that Brown’s analysis occurred when the three point line was at the top of the key and not the line in use today which is about 2-3’ further back. For all of us kids playing jr. high or high school ball back in his LSU days, Pistol Pete was our idol. We read every word we could find about him which included a race to the morning paper to see how many he scored in the previous day’s game. There will never be another like Pistol Pete Maravich.

Look up the vid "Bill Walton on Pistol Pete". The LSU coach went through every shot of his college career to find out how many 3 pointers it would have been. He would have averaged 13 3 pointers a game for an average of 56/57 pts a game.

This guy still is my all-time favorite player. His skill set was so insanely high it was ridiculous. His pop used to have him walk the railroad tracks while dribbling the ball on the rail. The pistol was one of my isles when I was playing. I knew all of his drills and practice. Players now don't have that type of focus.
