Top job, and excellently explained 👍 In no way criticisms, but two additional comments as food for thought... 1. Another common approach is to take a fused spur off the socket on the inside of the house and wire out through the back of that, rather than directly out through a socket itself as shown here. The pro for that approach is that it would allow you to isolate the external socket should an issue arise with it (and being exposed to the elements, there is always that possibility) without the faulty socket taking out the entire ring circuit. The con of course is that you have to chase a new box in the internal wall, or add a new surface mounted box. Adding the fused spur externally as you've shown is also an option to achieve the same result. 2. It's good practice to add a 20mm gromit to the knock out on the internal box as well. This prevents the twin and earth potentially wearing on the metal lip of the knockout over time (not that there will be massive movement, but still recommended). Excellent tutorial I must say and kudos for showing the various methods for entry into the extenal box 👍

Yes, I’d have gone with a switched fused spur. I’d have also preferred the rcd integrated into the socket. I definitely wouldn’t want that tripping the whole board.

I'd like to make a suggestion to anyone watching this to crack a cold one first as it helps with making the installation more water tight...(it doesnt but need to make it sound like you don't have a drink problem)

Great vid mate.. straight to point, and great to that there are options for people who dont have a CU with rcd's (like me lol i need to upgrade just saving for it at the mo) but a great video very clear. loved the mock up you made i more of a visual learner i like to see thing in practise... keep up the good work

I wiuld have used a fused spur internally - external power usage is notorious for fusing circuits and you do not want your ring mains going down. Also stainless steel srews cannot be held wih a magnet.

also... why did you split the earth cable on the interior? What kind of new internal socket did you use and what are they specifically called? I assume that is the only type of design socket that will accommodate for a spurred outside socket?

So how exactly would you install an outdoor socket if you don't have an existing socket on the wall ajacine to the outside wall you wish to put the socket on? For example, I only have sockets on the side walls which are joint to an neighbor either side.

I'm not questioning the handywork in this video but the legality as I thought that the only electrical task a non-qualified DIYer could carry out would require the supply cable to be fitted with a 13 A 3-pin UK plug and be plugged into the 3-pin socket? If the power supply is hard-wired into the back of the double socket , as shown here, then a qualified electrician is required for the task? 18th Edition-er asking.

Yes. You are correct in what you are saying. My intention is to show people how it is done safely as there are plenty of people out there that will try this regardless of the legality, I suppose the intention of this video is to help them do it safely.
