In this review, Amy is testing three full size food processors: The Cuisinart 14 cup food processor DFP-14BCNY, the KtichenAid Proline KFP1642, and a Breville Sous Chef BFP800XL. The test includes chopping, slicing, and shredding. The ingredients used are parsley, onion, tomato, potato, and cheese. These food processors all are good and bad in their own way but there was one clear winner! Enjoy! Please share!

Here's the key to chopping garlic with any food processor. Turn the motor on and drop the whole garlic cloves through the tube. Beautiful! :-)

I quarter the onions and apples and etc. and I get more even results with a Cuisinart, The S blade seems to reach the outside better. A hint from Julia from Americas Test Kitchen is to put cheese in freezer to harden before grating by hand so why not food processor.
@alexgqh
@alexgqh 3 года назад
Yes, I have also seen many people online saying they freeze their cheese for about 15 minutes before putting it in their food processor.

Great review Amy, I agree with the cuisinart and the buttons in the front. If things get stuck inside , it would be hard to clean, I do like that it has a heavy base however because I hate when they move around all over the counter. They all look pretty good to me.

I bought the Breville a couple of years ago, partially based on this review. I had to replace my 20 year old food processor when the bowl cracked. What a difference! The Breville is great - definitely an investment, but something that should last for many years. There is one downside. The processing bowl and lid are recommended to be hand washed. The instructions say they can occasionally be put in the dishwasher, but not on a regular basis. Fortunately, it is so well designed that there aren't any places where food gets caught or where it is difficult to clean. Definitely a great machine and a great purchase. Thanks for doing this review. It really helped me make my decision.
@__Paul__
@__Paul__ 2 года назад
Not true. The bowl and lid can be used in the dishwasher as much as you want, and there are no explicit recommendations from the manufacture to hand wash these specific parts. However, the plunger must be hand-washed, and is not dishwasher safe.
@latmcb9863
@latmcb9863 2 года назад
@@__Paul__ That's incorrect. These are the instructions copied directly from the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro instruction manual in the Care and Cleaning section for the Processing Bowl and Lid: "Hand wash in hot, soapy water using a mild detergent. Do not use a scouring sponge or pad or abrasive cleaners as they will scratch the plastic surface. The plastic parts may occasionally be washed in the dishwasher (top shelf only). It is not recommended on a regular basis, as prolonged exposure to hot water temperatures and harsh detergents will damage and shorten the life of the plastic."
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 2 года назад
We hand wash all plastic parts on expensive equipment to help them last longer. Ditto with blades and knives regardless of the manufacturer. Amy cracked a KitchenAid food processor bowl and had to get a replacement. Not worth the risk.

Also the Breville Sous chef mini blade is flawed-even though they sent a new one it ended up being another flawed blade that doesn’t fit the machine… misleading video!

Thanks for this review, Amy. I have to say the Breville is very impressive! I almost went with it, but chose the Cuisinart Elite 2.0 14-cup. They fixed the problem that you had previously with the seal on the lid trapping food by making it removable. It has a 1300 watt induction motor so it should have plenty of power. I was able to get it with two extra discs (julienne and french fry) for under $300, so not too bad. I haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces yet, but will soon. I also have a 9-cup Kitchenaid ExactSlice and it's ok, but nothing special. I wanted something larger and with more power to handle bigger jobs like pizza dough, so got the Cuisinart.
@AmyLearnsToCook
@AmyLearnsToCook 7 лет назад
I heard that they fixed the problem. I reviewed it when it first came out. I feel the same way about the KitchenAid. I have the 11 cup with the Exact Slice. The buttons on it are really hard to press. I don't get why they made it like that...and the results are not that great either. It surprises me because I have an older KitchenAid FP with the induction motor and it is a great little machine...but I cracked the lid by putting it in the dishwasher too many times. They don't make it anymore so I got the new version...boy was it a mistake!

Making potato chips with the Cuisinart is simple: put the potato upright in the feed tube up against the side of the chute that's in the direction the blade turns. It won't fall over as long as you don't press too hard with the pusher; let the blade do the work.

Thank you so much for putting this comparison together. It was very helpful to see a side by side demonstration of these products. I am leaning heavily toward the Breville because of its high quality and versatile functions. I bought their toaster about 8 years ago and it still works just great. It also still looks nice. I feel they make well designed products that last. I have one question though, is the Breville easy to clean up? I assume it is, but I would like to get your opinion about it. Thank you, Lisa

Great review and I agree with the results. I have had a Breville food processor for over 5 years and just recently (Oct 30) purchased the Cuisinart 14 cup. The main reason I purchased the Cuisinart was due to its size and weight compared to the Breville. We can place the Cuisinart on the counter and use it for basic cutting and shredding; however, when it comes to more then the basic we pull down the Breville. When I purchased the Breville ATK had said it was the best; however, the Cuisinart was recommended due to the price. Also worth mentioning, Consumers Report rates the Breville as the best. I purchased the Breville at Bed Bath and Beyond and the original cost was just under $400. With their coupon I was able to purchased it for $80 less. As one of your earlier reviewers mentioned, I also have purchased the Breville Toaster Oven five years ago, their blender two years ago. Their products cannot be beat. Did mess up on the food processor one time and contact their customer service. They were great and replace the item I mess up. If you want a basic food process and does a good (not great) job and has a good price ($99 on Amazon as of two days ago) then I would go with the Cuisinart; however, if you can afford the Breville I strongly recommend it.

Breville makes excellent products in my experience but I did notice that the S blade is of the type that has the spindle that goes all the way up into the lid. With my last processor, food would often get stuck in there and make a mess. I have the Cuisinart Custom 14 and have generally been very happy with it but it is a pain to clean so I seldom use it. In particular, the area of the bowl where the safety lock goes through never wants to get dry.

There are a few things a food processor does very well and many things that it does adequately. I wouldn't be pulling out the Breville to chop an onion poorly when I then must clean it and stow it. To produce a large volume of diced or minced veggies these machines are useful but to cut fries or carrots I'll stick to the knife or mandolin. The non sharpen ability of the discs is another long term issue. A very useful video!
@rcole6679
@rcole6679 5 лет назад
Nice review. The club stores negotiate with manufacturers to usually add an accessory or two not found with like models elsewhere, so that’s why they have a different model number. But yes, they are the same basic machine. Also, Breville is twice the cost of the CA and I love Breville. I haven’t been a CA fan for a long time, but this FP rates highest, based in value. If your an avid cook, I can see getting a Breville, but for us, shredding and slicing is fine. It all depends on your needs. I did read on Amazon, that a few reviewers had broken spindles which turn the blades. If that breaks, then the machine is no good. But CA does offer a 3 year warranty for all and a 5 year motor warranty. Why didn’t you take the bigger onion chunk and reprocess them? The KA May come with all those attachments, but they’re going to take a LOT of space! I’d rather pick my attachments, as needed. ALL FP attachments take a a lot of room, unfortunately. This video is dated now and the Breville runs about twice to three times, what the CA does, not $400-$500 anymore. It also get the highest rating on Amazon, but CA is rated as the best value and also has great ratings .

Thanks the video!!! 🌷 Breville appliances last a long time, they have really good motors, they're well designed, they're overall nicer and heavier - of SUPERB quality, and they're are BEAUTIFUL to look at! I always look for Breville products first, and if they don't have them, then I look for another brand. I must have close to 20 Breville appliances, and covet more! I like Kitchen Aid as well, but the Breville is the Rolls Royce of appliances, that's why they're more expensive 😊

Thank you for all your reviews. I've been doing a lot of research of all the kitchen equipment and tools for my kitchen. I'm just starting out. I actually found Cuisinart Elite in the 14 cup and 16 cup on Amazon and William-Sonoma but there are a lot of complaints about food getting stuck under the rubber seal and the lid.
@AmyLearnsToCook
@AmyLearnsToCook 7 лет назад
I did a test on the Cuisinart Elite some time ago and I abandoned the test because of that same issue. On the first try, the parsley got stuck in the lid and I couldn't get it out. I took it back. Word on the streets is that they fixed the issue but I haven't been able to test it.

Good video, never seen the Kitchenaid in stores, but I have a Breville and looooove it. It's 10x overkill for my cooking level but it's sooooooo nice. My biggest #1stworldproblem use to be having to grate 3 1/2lbs of cheese by hand when I'd make my Mac & Cheese. That took forever and my wrist would have near Carpal Tunnel after. I've used my Breville to do it over a dozen times and I'm still blown away every time at how damn fast it shreds cheese lol. It excels at everything, but literally, 2 or 3 1/4 second pulses too many and the Cole Slaw I was making had just about turned to Cabbage Soup. You gotta watch it like a hawk. Last week for tacos I pulled it out for 1 Tomato, 1 onion and 2 Jalapenos. It definitely took me longer to get it set up and clean it and put it all back. But it's amazing to see how fast it works. I want the Dice & Peel kit for it so bad.

Great job as always Amy. I just saw this one, somehow missed it after having watched your other processor video a while back. I had the Cuisinart one from this video (it was white but otherwise the same) 30 years ago. It was "ok" but I actually liked the previous JC Penney branded one I had before that (from about 1980) better and went back to it and used it again for years after. I don't remember it having the tube in back instead of front like yours, but it's been a long time so I can't say for sure. I didn't keep the Cuisinart long. I found the feed tube/interlock thing to be very overengineered and cumbersome to deal with. There were a lot of blades and things you could buy but it could get expensive as you said (and the machine itself was actually more then than it is now even without the 30 year difference in money). The fun part you would have liked as a mixer person and which they haven't made in years was a whisk attachment that went inside. I currently have a KA, but it's over 10 years old and I like it better than what they seem to be making now (the Pro Line would be a bit of a beast for me). I would definitely give the Breville serious consideration today (you can now also get it in 12 cup) (or possibly a different model of Cuisinart with combination blades and an adjustable slicer).

I would definitely hold on to your KitchenAid. I have one of the prior models and I like it a lot. The current model seems underpowered and the buttons are a real pain to press. I am still loving the Breville! They have a new model with a potato peeler and dicer.

I saw that model and it was definitely intriguing with the dicing kit. It also comes with a flat cover to use when you just want to chop something and you don't want to have to clean all the feed tubes. To me, that's a great feature. My only concern is the motor is 550 watts, so I wonder how that it would hold up to more demanding jobs..? I ended up going with the Cuisinart Elite 2.0 because it seemed like a more substantial machine for not much more money, but I would love to see someone review the other one.

I must have purchased defective Cuisinart FPs twice: first one was 11 cup Prep Plus, bowl cracked off the side attachment, and the plastic over the motor shaft split after 2 years, neither could be replaced! The big mistake was upgrading to the CBNY 14 cup model, the s blade lifts up and stops the FP while making dough, and if smaller amounts used, there is mix left under the blade, so I end up kneading by hand. Very unhappy with Cuisinart 14 cup. Bought these for dough. My old food processors from 30 years ago kneaded dough well. Am looking into Breville Sous Chef. Love your informative and funny reviews, Amy!

Looking back I do see that you have a review on the Cuisinart Elite 12 cup. So I guess the 14 and 16 cup are the bigger versions of that.

Glad to see that the Breville is still performing well. I bought it on your recommendation and am happy with it. Would love to see recipes using it.

It is a really nice food processor. I am glad that it is working out for you. I will be doing some recipes with it. I am just a little slow because this is just a weekend hobby for me...and I am learning to cook so I have to develop the recipe and test it a few times before I shoot it. I did try to make a double pie crust in the KitchenAid and it bogged it down so much...halfway through I moved the ingredients to the Breville and it handled it like a champ!

I just purchased this processor in Navy blue as well as the dough blade and 2mm slicing plate. The dough blade was $18 and the thinner slicing blade was $33. So I've got a total of around $300 into my processor, which is still about $75 less than the Breville. There is a thicker slicing blade available and a French fry disk. The French fry blade is around $50 and the thicker slicing blade is $25.

thank you amy for your vids. i have had the breville for a couple of years...and have to say, their quality now stinks. their plastic keeps on breaking. i have had 2 of the large bowls get stress cracks. i can barely push the spindle on for the blades...perhaps the stress cracks makes it a tad wider at the bottom to do this. that said, i have to get my hubby to wrangle the spindle off...it really is a nightmare. check amazon 1 star reviews...they have the same issue. plus most of the time breville doesn't have the bowl in stock to replace it. currently i have 2 bowls w/cracks and of course, the liquid during processing leaks all over the place. also, food gets stuck in the handle. i didn't notice this at first, but man i have all kinds of food stuck in the handle that i cannot get out...not so hygenic. i loved it at first....but the quality isn't what it used to be.

I just opened a Williams-Sonoma charge so I could get 20% off a breville. can't wait for it to arrive! as much as I look forward to my breville, I love the classic paddle buttons of the Cuisinart. so easy to use, and when you have to do a lot of pulsing, you really appreciate a responsive button. bought a kitchenaid a year ago that I can't stand to use because of how difficult it is to pulse(well, that and the terrible job it did processing).
@EricLearnstoCook

I understand that. Some Kitchenaids are not that good. Let us know how the Breville works out for you.

I have a KitchenAid 11 cup Exact Slice that I hate too! The buttons are horrible!!..and the performance is not that great. I did a test on that one a while ago and the Breville blew it out of the water. Please let me know how you like your Breville. It is a really nice machine...quiet with the induction motor and does an excellent job in my opinion.

This was a really comprehensive review! Thank you for taking the time to do it. I was kind of hoping the kitchenaid would have topped the ratings, as that's what I own, but 2nd place isn't bad. If the Breville had a dicing kit, I'd consider trading mine in. One suggestion I have with the stuck cheese in the kitchenaid is to hold the plunger fully down and let it run for a few seconds after most of the cheese has has processed. I think it would finish that leftover piece. On the other hand, your rat wouldn't get anything to eat. :)
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 7 лет назад
Like Amy said, they all did the job, just the Breville's slices looked prettier. We weren't fond of the KA's 8mm dicing kit as that is just too small to do much good. We are waaaaaaayyyy overdue on reviewing the 12mm dicing kit. So we hope that changes our minds. The KA was pretty and all that and came with a nice assortment of blades. Amy didn't pay much for it, otherwise she would have been a bit disappointed. but then, if she hadn't used or known about the Breville, then she would probably been really happy with it. I thought the Cuisinart would have done better. It did better (different model) in the previous test. Guess they don't make them to slice/chop like they used to. Oh well....smaller bowl probably is the thing that would have saved it. As for that rat, don't give ms. Amy any tips. I wanna keep that rat nice and fat. LOL!!!! Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it and took the time to comment.

If you had to choose between the Cuisinart or the Breville 12 cup with the smaller motor which would you choose?
@AmyLearnsToCook

I've never used the Breville 12 cup so I wouldn't be able to comment on it vs. the Cuisinart. I still enjoy my Sous Chef still to this day. The Cuisinart is also a good one. You can't go wrong with either one. Against the Sous Chef, I feel like the Sous Chef is better because it has a lot more attachments...but it is more expensive. In terms of the 12 cup, I am not sure.

Hi Amy. I love your reviews. I was wondering if you're still happy with the Breville? Is it still holding up? I bought mine 2 months ago and small pieces of plastic started to chip off from the bottom of the bowl and from the top of the base where the bowl slides on. Still working, but who knows for how much longer, so I'm sending it back. So, I didn't know if I should try a new one again or switch to a different brand. Thanks

I love my Breville. I just used it yesterday to make pie crust. Maybe reach out to them and see if they will replace the bowl under warranty. Do you hand wash it?
@leahf1870

@@AmyLearnsToCook Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, Only hand wash. Breville was no help at all. Luckily Amazon let me make a return even though it was past their return window. I'm just wondering if I should buy a new Breville again and risk similar problems or go with a cuisinart or Magimix.

I don’t think your review of the cuisinart was fair. You cut the onions in half not quarters which was going to make it harder to get the pieces cut consistently.

I would probably subtract some points from the Breville for the bulkiness and greater difficulty in cleaning. The Cuisinart may have some minor drawbacks but it's about a quarter of the price for about 90% of the gain. It gets my vote.

I think Cuisinart came out with the Elite line to compete with Breville because it's very similar. The feeding tube are much larger than their Custom line.
