Ultimate GameCube Setup & Combo: controllers, accessories & more! 

This reminded me of that GameCube video we did years ago. I’ve come to appreciate the GameCube as time goes on. I always thought it was generally ignored because it didn’t come equipped with a DVD player.

I still play my Gamecube to this very day, it's always 2001 over at my house!

I think what often gets overlooked as a necessary GameCube accessory is the action replay. Generally you don't consider it an accessory because it's software but the action replay allowed you to do so much more in games that you normally wouldn't be able to do. For example you can play around with test levels in Wind Waker and even unlock debug mode in a few games. Perhaps my favorite was being able to play as Master Hand, Crazy Hand and Giga Bowser in Super Smash Brothers Melee.

How can you have the ultimate setup without the bongos! Come on man, I stayed up all night playing with my bongos!

One thing that I think might be worth mentioning in an ultimate GameCube setup is a sound system that supports Dolby Pro Logic II. To be fair, that's not something unique to the GameCube, but I feel that's something you gotta have when playing GameCube games.

RU-vidrs are so lucky, they have great communities, they do what they love for a living and they just get stuff sent to them.

I am surprised nobody is recreating those hori gamepads. Those are pricey.

My favourite gaming memory is playing Resident Evil 4 on my Dads Gamecube before school. For my 30th birthday, he brought me a Gamecube setup with original cables, a HDMI converter, and Resident Evil 4 collectors edition. The Gameboy Player would be gravy but I have to say I'm still happy with my perfect setup ☺

You don’t need the disc for the GB Player, you can run it using homebrew called GB Interface. You should use GBI anyways, since it corrects most of the flaws of the original software when it comes to timing, image quality, scaling options and lag. Also it’s in active development and just keeps getting better

I still use my GameCube for the GameBoy Player & Smash Bros Melee. I never seen the Hori controller at 6:29 before, I would've definitely got that.

Oh, man that takes me back. Especially it is really cool to see that the GC-GBA link cable was not just something Nintendo tried out, but actually became the basis for the DS family handhelds and the WiiU.

Not sure if any comments touched on it yet, but for those on a budget or want a different color or know where to look, Japan got more than just the black Gameboy Player, they had Indigo/Silver/Orange as well. If you can find a seller on eBay, you can find the player and the disc for around $50+ which is much cheaper than the U.S. version. Gameboy's are region free so no need to worry about game regions, but you'll have to either have a region mod in your GameCube to run Japanese games, or have a disc called the Freeloader which allows for Japanese games to be played on the U.S. system. Even having to buy the additional Freeloader is cheaper than buying a U.S. Player and disc, surprisingly, and you get to have your GB Player match the color of your system. Even cheaper would be to buy it directly in Japan since they have units for dirt cheap, but of course you would have to randomly end up on a trip to Japan to even consider this option. The lower price logic to this option also extends to games for systems like SNES, Gameboy's, N64, etc. Games like Super Mario World, Super Mario Land I/II, Kirby 64, Yoshi's Story, etc., are significantly cheaper for the Japanese copies. SNES/N64 just need a slight cartridge slot modification to fit the different style cartridges or you can swap the backs of a U.S. and Japanese cart so the indentations match. Gameboy's need no mods, just simply plug in and enjoy. Systems like GameCube/Wii/Wii U need some sort of disc or homebrew software to get region free ability, and Switch is already region free out of the box.

My ultimate GameCube setup... for the 30th anniversary of Legend of Zelda I set up *5* GameCubes with 4 Gameboy Players (thankfully you only need one disc!) to play Four Swords. It was pretty awesome. I used Commodore 1084 monitors for the Gameboy Player systems and a larger monitor with component video input for the system actually running the game. When I set that up again... I'll use a Wii to run the game, and I'll get more Wavebirds. The tangle of cables from the four systems was a nightmare.

I actually busted out my Gamecube recently so I could play Pokemon Colosseum, still works great even today. Note to any Pokemon fans you will def want the GBA link cable!

Metal Jesus... Toss out that awful GameBoy Player mini disc and try the Game Boy Interface (GBI)... RetroRGB has a good tutorial on this. You wll love the improvement on the picture quality.

I've been watching a lot of your videos the later years and have actually been wanting to come from Norway to Seattle just to experience the retro gaming community you guys got over there. Just a small note, you dont actually need the disc for the gameboy-player on the GC. You can load a file into your memorycard and boot up the gameboy-player, using several different gamecube-games. Keep up the good work :)

I remember having to get the GBA cable to play Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles multiplayer. And the Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle!

This is missing 4 GBA and the necessary link cables to play Zelda 4 Swords on Gamecube with a full party! I mean, money ain't no objective, right :)

I would put wired controllers above the wireless controllers, because despite the ease of use with the wavebird wireless, it lacks the rumble which makes a lot of games feel better to play. Mario Party especially utilizes rumble, and the exclamation points are not a good enough replacement for the rumbly feeling.

Did you try the GBI boot image for Gameboy Player/Gamecube HDMI with Swiss? I hear a lot of good things about that!

i had what i felt at the time was the ultimate Gamecube Setup, which was the Black Console, 1000+ Block Mega Memory Card (still have tucked away safely), Game Boy Player, and 50 games for it, some that came with accessories of their own, like Donkey Konga with the Bongo Drums.

Kudos for going all the way and shaking the GameCube with the HDMI adapter!

the only thing I would recommend is getting the game boy interface a shot much better than the original gbp from nintendo still needs the same hardware just using superior software.

I'm glad that the GameCube still holds up spectacularly. It's simply terrific. I personally feel like the best thing out of all of this is the converter. The component cable is beyond expensive so thank the lord for that adapter

How generous to donate the Panasonic Q! I think you've convinced me to get mine down from the loft. I also have it's GBA player, I think it cost more than the console. Will definitely check out that HDMI adapter

You actually don’t need the disk. You can get SD media launcher for GameCube and launch homebrew program called game boy interface which is far superior to the official disk because you can play these game boy games in 240p vs 480i/p

Misleading to say you can’t get the gameboy playing without the Nintendo gameboy player software disc....just get a sd media launcher and use homebrew software which is great as you can force 240p resolution which looks amazing on a crt

Awesome video as always, Jason. The GameCube has always been one of my favorite consoles and among the 10+ consoles that I personally own and still have set up it's maybe my most cherished, because I have the better part of this setup. I have a black DOL-001, paired with a black Game Boy Player (and disc of course), connected to the TV (55" 4K UHDTV) via the rare component cables (which go for $330+ now) and matched with a black Hori Digital Gamepad (going for $170+ now) and an old Wavebird Controller. The Hori Pad and component cables going for a combined $500 makes this the most valuable console in my collection. Never would have imagined this back when people made fun of the GameCube.

if you dont wanna shell out big bucks for the Hori controller, Raphnet sells SNES to Gamecube controller cables that work great

@MetalJesusRocks, how come you have so much cool stuff? Ha! I need to look into that HDMI adapter. I've been holding out for a GameCube Classic but I'm not sure that will be a thing...I'm not even sure an N64 Classic will be a thing and that would need to come first! My soft modded Wii U is my ultimate Gamecube setup :D. It serves as a handheld Gamecube too now with the latest updates to Nintendont. I'm so glad that I snagged a Wii U before the prices skyrocketed. Being able to play Rogue Leader and MK Double Dash whilst on the can is fantastic.

I always watch the new vids and every so often go back and rewatch old ones of yours as well. This looks pretty sweet on GameCube 👍👍👍

I made the BIGGEST mistake back then but thinking the GC was just the "weak system" of that era! I am playing almost EXCLUSIVELY GameCube these days lol! Somehow after all these years became one of my very favorite consoles! (and I shelled out for the Nintendo component cable - totally worth it!)

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was awesome to play on the GC with 4 people, using GBA's was done really well. You're inventory, HUD and other functions were on your GBA. Worked really well.

Great video metal Jesus, just got a quick question though, I already put in an order for Zeldaxpros GC plug n play, I see that the one you linked in this video does what seems like the same thing except instead of $100 it's $50 more, I'm trying to get a similar ultimate GameCube setup. Zeldaxpros model is smaller and cheaper and the new 3.0 mini model doesn't fry your GameCube like his 2.0 did. Should I back out and buy this product instead? If so, what makes it better? Since you included this with your ultimate GameCube setup and not zeldas. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Is it really worth the extra $50 price tag, thanks again for the great vid.

It's worth noting that the Wavebird controller doesn't support rumble.

I have a 12ft extention cable for the GameCube controllers. I got it from a flea market about 10 years ago or so. It works really well and can make almost any game play better if your not using a wireless controller.

Forgot one of those screens that attached and folded in like a laptop screen. Included car charger to play on road trips. Me and my brother had tons of fun on crazy taxy and Pikmin etc while on the go. Also had composite and other in/outputs which made it awesome. Must have for an ultimate setup!

Let's be fair, the other AV device didn't damage your Gamecube. The person who decided to trip over the console's controller that, in turn, jerked the console forward is what damaged the console.

That GBA-GameCube adapter cord is actually very necessary for Pokemon fans who want to get certain Pokemon on their GBA main series games from Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, since the Pokedex data for those certain Pokemon are necessary to complete the National Pokedex.

The GameCube controller is my favorite controller to this day.It's so comfortable,light and has a great button layout.

I was looking at buying a GameCube about 6 months ago. Decided to get a Wii and a component cable instead, which was a lot cheaper way to play GameCube games. Great video, thanks 👍

The Eon actually uses the A/V port in tandem with the digital video port to pull the L/R Audio. For some reason the Digital out doesn't have audio hooked up, so even with component you'd still need the regular A/V cable's audio hooked up.

I don't understand why you're still blaming the product for that GameCube being broken clearly it was the female's fault for tripping over the cord.

I finally got the incredible game cube player dialed in with the settings to match a around 40 inch widescreen from 07 that had S video hookups. Remember S video hookups from the 90s before component. Definitely an upgrade from standard AV. For the GameCube player to look amazing switch tv to full frame or 4:3 from widescreen then on settings z button option change screen size to full frame, soft filter, border frame 20, and possibly take your tv sharpness level down one or two levels because S video ups the sharpness and brightness and can cause jaggies if sharpness too high.Been enjoying Golden Sun this way with cube analog stick and fat A button. Looking forward to trying others as well. Use to play em on retron 5 in HD but like this even better and more true with the cube controller and analog stick. Very cool set up for sure. Got to experience the Gamecube through a cousin of mine and my favorite accessory was the Gameboy player. I had a GBA and had the re-release of all three Dragon Warriors. Loved being able to play them on a TV again.

One thing you're missing there is the Donkey Konga bongos and Donkey Kong Jungle beat, that's a really good laugh (if a bit knackering;)

The color the GameBoy Player "adds" I believe is actually the Super GameBoy palette, which was an accessory for the SNES and widely supported by GB games. Also, you've completely glossed over all the homebrew opportunities for the GC. Swiss is a fantastic GameCube IPL replacement that has all kinds of features. The GC Loader is a great accessory, replacing your GameCube disk drive with a high-speed SD card slot. You can also get an SD card adapter for the Serial Port 2, which was never used for any consumer accessories.

Hey Metal Jesus: just a tip to keep original Gameboy games in their black and white glory, simply press Left and B on the "Nintendo" logo screen. This works on the GBA and GBA Player, according to the boot-up disc manual. No more annoying auto-coloring :) ...Happy gaming, my friend!

For playing games on the Game Boy player, I simply use a PS2 remote through a $9 PS2 -> Gamecube adapter from Amazon. Besides the triggers needing a lot of pressure to register, it works great for me.

Gamecube, what a great system. Good to see it getting some love nowadays after being relegated to 3rd place in its day. Can't match the breadth of the PS2 library obviously, but graphically a bit better than PS2 (IMHO), definitely brighter colors, and just sooooo many incredible exclusives. As far as the ultimate ultimate GC setup... Dolphin FTW... 100% game compatibility and upscaled resolution, amazing.

I didn't see anyone mention it, but FreeLoader is a neat piece of software for the GameCube. FreeLoader is a third-party disc that allows you to play any region-locked game on any gamecube. Play all your favorite JP-only GameCube games without hunting down an import console!

You should’ve included the Action Replay for GameCube as well. Not only does that thing allow for some amusing cheats, but it can also bypass the system’s region locking, allowing you to play Japanese and European games on an American system without modding it.

One thing to note about the Panasonic Q is that it is possible to mod them to remove the region lock. If you can do that, you're not only able to play both Japanese and American games, but DVDs as well. Granted, that's probably a more interesting feature to European players, but worth remembering nonetheless.

I would like to mention that the Gameboy to Gamecube link cable is like the only way to get a legitimate Jirachi on the Pokemon games.

8:46 To be fair: They are games alike the GameCube Pac-Man(which exact title I always forget), Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures that are ompletely dependent on the CC-GBA-Link-Cable. Yes, you _can _ play them without. But it locks out the Multiplayer and these games are *so* made for multiplayer and it's a nice little idea that each player also has his own screen. In FFCC the players for example have different maps on the area on their screens and in Four Swords you have to cooperate to beat the level, but each one is also a competition who collects most Force Crystals and with underareas alike houses being GBA-Screen exclusive you can go somewhere and get some chests or similar things "in secret".

You forgot the dualshock to gc adapter. Playing gc games with a plastation controller was perfect!

God thing we got the GC Loader and SD2SP nowadays so now the GameBoy Player disc can be easily worked around

I have a 24 carat gold GameCube. It was given as one of the gifts at an awards ceremony for tier 1 executives in Nihonbashi district Tokyo back in 2002. The tier 1 executives also received a private party evening with a Geisha. That was a different time.

6:55 The tony hawk's games on GBA look awesome, but ive tried playing them and i suck compared to the main console ones, i really would like to get good at those games and finish them all. I gotta recommend a Wii or WiiU with a 1 or 2tb HDD for GameCube stuff. You can have all the games in 1 place and with a HDMI connection. Its like making a Gamecube classic. Recently I've been making a original "Xbox Classic" and added a Hdd to my ps2 which was stored away for years to make them "Classic" all in 1 consoles. Big respect to Cameron for donating you that Panasonic Q, Very generous.
