Can I just comment on how brilliant Frank Herbert is to have come up with all those philosophical aphorisms before every chapter. It is really effing hard to do. Genius.
I really liked the first half, but it got a bit boring somehow in the second half. Most books had thst for me somehow... Especially children of dune. Maybe if i re read those books again. Started chapterhouse dune now, and then the 2 final brian herbert books as well.
Your reading of the series is exquisite. It is no exaggeration to say that when I imagine Dune as a story your voice is literally the one inside my head. You have immersed me in the Dune universe.
I love that scene in Tabr when Odrade reads the message from Leto, gave me serious chills when I first read it. The highlight of the book for me, like after the events of God Emperor his fingerprints are still there to help humanity
It's doubly insane because IIRC the Bene Gesserit at this point are all supposed to have Siona blood and be immune to prescience (which is why Duncan can't leave the no-ship; some of his cells lack the marker). How the hell does Leto know as much as he does?
Waff is one of my favorite "tragic" characters. The Tleilaxu always seemed like they have a handle on things, and Waff is basically always going around, strutting his stuff. But in every single encounter with the Bene Gesserit, he's shown to be nowhere near as clever as them.
The Bene Tleilax are formidable, it took thousands of years for the Bene Gesserit to crack their code and manipulate them. But they did. They always do.
@@vincentgodin-filion9942 I agree. When their inner religion was uncovered, Waff and the Tleilaxu through him, were manipulated finally to a degree that earns the original comment here. Waff and the Tleilaxu did however remain to be treated as a truly dangerous unknown and even under complete absolute surveillance, the capsule of DNA that Waff had in his upper chest/throat was still undiscovered and left to the unknown futures of Frank herberts Dune novels, in a completely unknown area of space, concealed still, within the no-ship stolen by Duncan Idaho.
I agree that he has a good voice for reading, but his vocal inflections sometimes miss the mark. This is a very minor thing. He has pauses in...awkward places when reading direct verbiage from the novels. Most of the time it is spot on, but when he misses, it jars me. I am maybe hyper-critical; I am an English teacher at the high school level, and have a definite idea of how these should be read. A- for these videos.
IOIAF got me to read the whole series. The animations for the ultimate guides are so helpful for getting people into reading who normally prefer visual medium.
I've been re-reading all the books because I've only read the sequels once. It's crazy how much better they are the second time around. I'm currently on Heretics and I can't believe how much I love it because I thought it was only okay the first time. You pick up so much of the nuance within the characters, story, and mythology on that second read. This later era in the story is fascinating with the mystery surrounding the scattering. I can already feel how much I'm going to be wishing that Frank Herbert would've been able to write that final book. I love these new characters and I'm going to be a mess all over again when I finish Chapterhouse.
I was first introduced to Dune as a kid with the old real time strategy games and the movie, before eventually reading the first four books in high school. Your series has made me want to dive back into the books I've already read with new purpose, and finally read the several that I missed. Thank you for this series, your love and dedication to this universe is apparent to all friend.
@@lennysmileyface I actually am juuuuust old enough to remember Dune II, which was then remade into Dune 2000. Both are awesome though, although it definitely confused me when I got into the books and the Ordos were mysteriously not a major third party lol
@@robertroy7818 I would venture to guess that House Ordos in-game is basically derived from the Ixians. Although that is weird considering House Atreides and Harkonnen are in there, meaning they must have had the license to use the established houses.
Dune really is the best Sci Fi series out there. I personally stopped after God Emperor because I thought I got every I needed out of the book series, obviously I thought wrong.
After a few readings, the last 2 became my favorite. Herbert had a plan for this arc, and as a result the story really moves in a way the earlier books didn't, but always felt like a logical extension of the earlier works.
Of course they are a logical extension. When you read them the first time, the change in God emperor is quite shocking, after three books in the company of the same characters more or least. Paul, the lady Jessica, Alia, Stilgar, the baron, Gurney, Duncan... Okay, Duncan is not the best example. I am one of those who think that the change of the Duneverse in the second trilogy was for the better.
These videos are so well done. Whenever I get stuck in a Dune novel, I use these videos to help me get excited to resume reading. I never would have made it through God Emperor without your videos!
The Last hundred pages elevated this book for me, putting it on par with the first. “GED” is still the most mind opening philosophical SF work, surpassing heinlein’s “Stranger In A Strange Land”. I have gone back and re read the first four books in anticipation of the film, and to see how much I have changed since reading them as a angry rebel youth. Age brings wisdom and an understanding of life that is not attainable as an angry rebel youth. But, youth is action and has the ability to change.
This entire series is just absolutely incredible - Dune has always been criminally underappreciated, imho... it really is the Lord of the Rings of science fiction, in terms of sheer scale, scope and detail - there have, of course, been other incredibly expansive sci-fi series since then, but Dune was arguably among the first (Asimov's 'Foundation' universe is the only rival from around that time - much as I love Foundation, though, I personally prefer Dune). One thing I lover about the Dune universe is how the lack of advanced computer tech is a key plot point throughout the series. That world-building choice Herbert made when developing the lore was a actually a very risky position for science fiction, particularly at the time - while Asimov's novels and the Star Trek series espoused the advancement and development of computer tech, which was still very new at the time, Herbert all but threw that convention out completely, opting instead to have deprive his fictional societies of the kind of tech we all take for granted every day, forcing them to refocus their energy toward advancing human skills and traits to near-superhuman levels. And the scarcity of the means to participate in this form of advancement regresses humanity to a neo-feudal age more reminiscent of medieval societies. When you really analyze this series' universe, you start to grasp how unconventionally risky and outside the box Dune truly was when it first debuted. Nobody had ever seen anything quite like it. I would argue that still nothing quite lives up to the outright sense of wonder and vastness that those first 6 novels projects...
This series is such a valuable experience. Every Time I read or watch something Herbert I realize something new. thank you for helping me bridge my neurons.
Having read the Dune saga books 30~ years ago, I have always enjoyed the scope and power of the story. Having older eyes now, long reading is less comfortable, so I really enjoyed this abbreviated re-telling, allowing me to relive the highlights of the saga. These videos are very well done and the narrator is very mesmerizing! I guess the Chapter House edition of this series hasn't been produced yet, so I eagerly await to its arrival to continue enjoying this series.
Mannnnn I binged the hell out of your videos. I saw the recent Dune movie and was immediately hooked. Then I watched it a second and third time. This was when I started to really wonder about the universe of Dune and began to drive into the lore. Then boom here comes your channel. Thank you so much. Heretics of Dune is a good book, however, the God Emperor is my favorite and Chapterhouse is guess my second most favorite book of the series. Great video. I like your voice.

The tyrant worm had hyperprescience since his childhood. He lived more than 3 millennia and possessed all the knowledge of the universe. On top of that, nobody else could understand the fucking Golden Path. You know, he could spend centuries playing philosophizing with himself. Anyway, my least favorite is Messiah. I agree with you, Hunters might make a good movie. IMO the book is OK if we ignore the end. When I read it, I found very interesting epic and grotesque scenes. And of course, my dear Sheeana always awesome.
I dare not say that any book of the Dune series is bad, but in my view Messiah is the worse. I found the conspiracy very predictable and the end too tragic. Also I did not believe that Alia forgave Irulan. After poisoning someone you decide to take care of her children... It does not make any sense to me.

Revisiting these after listening to Last Podcast On the Lefts Dune Podcast...while i appreciate the humor and love that they will hopefully open this series to whole new audiences, Quinn really tackles these books and themes with the intellectual maturity they deserve. I would say LPNs are the School House Rock of Dune, while Quinn is attending a course at University with a very passionate and knowledgeable professor. Well done.
Really awesome job as always. This third arc withing the Dune universe is still my favourite, too bad Herbert died before finishing it ! We did got the decaf contradictory version of his son, too bad I didn't really liked it. The next book is my personal favourite in the Dune series and too often overlooked. This is lightyears better than any audiobook I could find for Dune online. I've been listening to your series while working, and I don't know what to do now that you've finished! You should definitely consider narrating audiobooks. Fantastic voice acting and atmosphere.

Back then she thought I was strange, and now she’s began to understand the worlds I began to explore over 20 years ago. Thank you, my friend. (Do you think you might make a video about the ‘lost 7th novel?. Maybe using the authors notes as they did with Fitzgerald’s ‘Last Tycoon’?)

I read the first dune book when I was around 14 years old. I had completely forgotten about it till i bumped into these videos then it all came back to me. This channel rekindled my love for the series.
I've been looking forward to this one in particular. I like GEoD more than most people, but I also greatly enjoy how Heretics and Chapterhouse recalibrate the Dune universe and expand it beyond Arrakis/Rakis to other worlds and other universes.

Thanks, that was nicely done. I'll share with you my favorite little bit of this truly great book. I realize you couldn't include it here, for obvious reasons of brevity and directness, of course. It's when Odrade is waiting for Sheanna to arrive at the Keep. Odrade looks out a window & down at the Plaza of Keen. She sees a group of men begin dancing a long, intricate dance - naked. A lot of things happen at once, but the main thing is her watching the dancers. Right at the end, when everything erupts in chaos, Sheanna arrives and walks up to Odrade. Something Sheanna says suddenly crystallizes Odrade's understanding, and she realizes the dance, the crowd, the chaos - all are part of the same thing: a language. The last sentence of the last paragraph of that section states that 'it had arisen the same way all languages had: *_out of necessity._* Herbert was bitingly insightful, and everything that happened in the Dune books happened for a reason. There was never a parade or a fight just to break up the monotony, or to fill out some pages. No 'pomp & circumstance.' Everything had a purpose. He also had this amazing ability to take normal aphorisms and turn them upside down; to turn the tables on expected wisdom. An example would be the line, "Those who would repeat the past, must control the teaching of history." It's like taking some weird corollary of a normal rule, and somehow showing *_that's the real truth._* He stripped the romanticism from such things, and laid bare human motivations. He was a master of *_both_* cutting directness *_and_* obfuscation. He could use technical jargon well enough to make your head spin - and he understood what he was saying. It wasn't just techno-babble! For Destination: Void, he actually used real ideas from computer programming. When a new edition came out, he went back and made changes to his own 'techno-babble' sounding (to me, anyway!) passages - to reflect the latest ideas in programming! Wow. That's all I can say. Wow. tavi.

I first read the Dune series when I was in middle school, and they legitimately changed my life. I've read them a few times since, picking up things I missed the first time. I really appreciate you doing this series of videos, for helping rekindle the love for this series I had.

Really, really, really well produced. your channel is a boon. On the subject it self: although God Emperor and original Dune remain my favourites, Heretics is right behind them. You can't shake off the feeling of imminent doom, of powerful and frankly, self-absorbed women (and men) slowly losing control while they still cling to their own grandiosity.

I AM a heretic of Dune. Because I love the Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune so much more than the first two books. My favorite in the whole Dune series is Sheeana, but no doubt Darwy Odrade has a deep humanity that makes her so interesting and so unusual. Her introspections and the memories of her childhood's sea are... OK, pure poetry. I hate when they compare her to Lucilla. They only look physically. Lucilla is fucking unbearable. Her presence in the plot really bothers me. Her last sacrifice is one of the most beautiful scenes in the series, especially because she was too self-confident, and because she helped to keep the Lampadas ancient knowledge safe. Lucilla has nothing to do with the Smart and ellegant M S of Chapterhouse. Thank you Dama.
I sometimes find Lucilla very childish. In that great scene with Duncan, Sirafa and Burzmali she really behaves like a complete cretin. She boasts of her achievements, which could be exactly those of any other imprinter, but finally she has no choice but to follow Sirafa's instructions. She talks too much to be a Reverend Mother. Odrade is like a breath of fresh air for the sisterhood. Unfortunately Brian and Kevin didn't know how to use her memory.
Thanks for the video man, been listening to HoD on audio book but really had a hard time getting into it and wrapping my head around the overall story. Hard enough to read with Add and the audio books seem more appropriate but damn, Herbert's writing style going forward without taking any pauses between pages is.... Dense. Great narration. I had to listen after hearing the audio book to tie up things I missed. I really enjoyed this book and the story of the BG. I do think the plot twists ended up leaving some plot holes. And Super Saiyan Teg was by far my favorite

I love this books .. I just adore this whole series in its entirety..and so many people stop at the first book or the second! I feel like the story is so incomplete and the each book puts the others into a whole new context .. just brilliant
I've just finished reading Heretics of Dune! I've really enjoyed all 5 thus far, some more than others obviously, but I think Heretics might just be my favourite of them all. Its story has the gravitas of the first three books and I feel it's message is more concise and understandable than that of God Emperor.
Please, please, pleeaaaasseee release chapterhouse. As much as I'm enjoying your coverage of emerging Dune 2021 information my hunger for the chapterhouse video dwarves all else.
I discovered how awsome Dune is through these videos. So when I read the books and watched the crappy movie and slightly less crappy series I see and read it through your perspective. Sometimes that is not a good thing but in this case it was a gift. Just a fantastic job dude

A note about Ixian navigation devices. They were not 100% reliable at this time, which is why the spacing guild still had some level of power and leverage. To use an Ixian navigator was to be willing to lose that ship somewhere unknown.
Thats not my recollection. Pre-ixian nav computers of the B. jihad were safe 90% of the time. Post-God-Emperor Tleilaxu nav computers had no such limitation.
I catch alot of flack when I tell ppl that "Heretics" is one of my all-time favorites. Its a very intriguing story and so much more lore packed into 1 tome.
It is a good book. Though I did have a little trouble at times telling the one Bene Gesserit from the other, partly because I took a long time reading the book. Leto's message to the Sisterhood was so strong.
I couldn't finish Hertics. I lost the passion for Dune sometime while reading it. I might get back to it one day, but I appreciate that you are doing this Ultimate Guide to it. Thanks.

Although I still prefer Heretics to God Emp. (because it prefers plot to pontification), I now consider it-- having just re-read it-- a bit of "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks." Solid summary on your part.
Heretics is my favourite of the series so far. Call me a heretic (heh heh heh) but I found God Emperor to be kind of a slog. Every time Leto II started off on yet another sermon, all I could do was roll my eyes and say "stfu Worm Man." But here comes Heretics, in which Sheeana says something to the effect of "finally some frickin excitement!!" I could not agree more. Given the themes of God Emperor and how he purposely enforced a monotonous peace that would lead to the Scattering, I can't help but wonder if this Boring Slog to Frickin' Excitement tone change was by design. If so--well-played, Mr. Herbert. Well played.
Quinn, I've been a reader since a very young age. I grew up in am unconventional family of progressive greatest generationers and liberal hippie parents. My father gave me Tolkien when I was six, and I of course started with the hobbit. I did eventually get a Nintendo and other gaming systems but television and gaming were a treat. My grandmother taught me to print in cursive, Pittman shorthand and pristinely so. This was in a very old portion of the US, the north shore of Boston as it's called. I spent summers in wildlife camps and accelerated academic programs. I read the classics because I was encouraged but also as much because I desired to do so. I've read thr complete works of Tolkien, Lewis, the Greeks, Marcus Aurelius, the bible, qu'ran and torah [abrahamic] I read Rowling along with Steimneck and Rand, Tolstoy, The good doctor "Gonzo: Thompson and James Frey, David Sedaris, Billy Shakes and I only elaborate such because these are the foundations of oral tradition, our genetic memory and there is very little new under the sun, at least not since the inception of the abrahamic religions. I had a mentor who's since passed that prostelized the lofty accomplishments of Frano Herbert's Dune. I can say without apprehension that Asimov and Herbert like Heironomys Bosch and Francis Bacon truly created something original, and so extraordinarily well written, it's inspiration is as divine to me as any other text and likely a more. Uamced version of the future truth, without completely fatalistic and dystopian view. The general computation of a man who has expanded his mind and through it had come tthrough to epiphany unseen by most. On a lighter note, while I was truly a child of Star Wars and still dearly love much if it, and numerous other works of sci-fi, it's almost laughable how far ahead Herbert was and how even other works which are considered pivotal or critical are nothing but the offspring of Asimov and moreover Herbert. I listen to your videos whilst I sleep to help cope with severe anxiety and PTSD and I want to thank you for this series. It's as remarkable as you are, and you expanded my mind and inspired me to read every word of Herbert's work and likely will many more times throughout my lifetime.
