I'm a roadie at heart so I went with the Challenge "Gravel Grinder" (a 42mm version of their Chicane CX tires). File tread in the center, nice shoulder knobs for the turns. They can handle everything but loose silt/sandy stuff (they spin out under power) but my "gravel" rides are always at least half on the road so I hate battling center knobs on asphalt. Maybe I'm doing this wrong...

I've been riding with 45mm Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M 650b's. Lov'em for the rougher stuff. I just bought another wheel set (Zipp 303s) fitted with 35mm Panaracer Gravelking SS's for those tarmac / light gravel loops. Haven't been able to try them out yet, however, as there's a foot of snow on the ground here.

My favourite bits of today’s vid: 1) 01:58 2) 03:43 3) 06:29 4) 07:06 My favourite ‘road / gravel / light off-road’ tyre is the Schwalbe Marathon on my Brompton H6L. Never had a puncture in 9 years, but after 3-4 years the schraeder valve can wear down and/or part company with the tube causing slow punctures, so I replace the tubes when I change tyres every 4,500 miles. PS I love your vids you put so much effort in they’re a pleasure to watch. 👍👏🏻❤️

I really wanted to love the Gravel King SKs. I certainly did love the ride. They were fast and felt great. What I didn't like was the fit on my rims. I'm one of those "line the logo up with the valve stem" people, and it didn't take long (one ride) for me to notice the tires were slipping on the rims, and not just the rear. I thought maybe I had some old sealant on the inside of my rims and this was allowing the tires to slide, so I took them off and gave the tires and rims a good cleaning. They did the same thing. I did not have this problem with the Continentals I usually roll with. I'll be giving another brand a shot this year.

Running two different tires or two different sizes is also a great way to tune in how your bike feels! A tire with a smoother tread in the rear reduces rolling resistance, while something a little gnarlier up front gives you a little more bite and confidence in the front of the bike. A fatter tire up front will also affect the geometry of the frame, slackening the geometry just a liiittle bit. The idea has been popular with bmx and mountain biking for a long time now, and I'm glad to see Ultradynamico applying the idea to gravel (in a cool matchy-matchy way too!). I personally like to put something with a smooth-ish center tread and cornering lugs on the rear, and something really sticky and more aggressive on the front.

Great vid. My riding in Los Angeles skews more on the 'road' side of all-road, and I'm running a Rene Herse Barlow Pass 700x38. Absolutely love them. They rip on pavement, and the small-file tread is enough for the torn up, sandy roads in Griffith Park and Hollywood Hills. When they do break traction, I find it pretty predictable and controllable.

I have the same here in Vermont where it's a mix of dirt and pavement most rides. Feels really fast and handles even some woods roads. My bike came with Gravel King SK, which felt slow on pavement.

Nice overview of the most important part of the bike (IMO.) For adventures that include rough gravel, singletrack, mild gnar, I have been loving my new Kenda Sabers 650B 52mm. Yes, they are a XC MTB tire, but as such, a veritable magic carpet and gnar-capable. Very supple (tubeless of course), very light, with a low profile center that rolls fairly well on pavement and has good grip in hard breaking on steeps. Minimal side knobs had me worried, but they have been great when it counts. Main concern is that I bet they will wear out quickly. Thinking of the Renee Hearse Juniper Ridge 650 48 up next. Expensive, but I have heard good things about wear. Suggestion for the owners of old CX bikes: I was able to max out mine with a Maxxis Ramblers mullet - 45 F, 40 R. I liked having the same tread on both, but max out the front cushion.

WTB Resolute 700×42 best tire I've had. Just enough knobs to keep me grounded up a climb and keep the rubber side down on corners without the dreaded flinging of pebbles some tires are notorious for and fast, these tires are fast.

Thanks DKlein. I don't have much of a basis for comparison but for the better part of the last year, I've been riding on Teravail Sparwood 2.1 tires that came stock with my gravel bike. These tires have been great for the "gravel" we have here in the coffee region of Colombia. The smaller 650b wheels and tires have carried me over the often very rocky, forest roads out my back door, and also have allowed me to put in the miles on the pavement here. I've even hit up a little of the proper enduro mtb trails with them. Ultimately, I think I would like to add something a little faster rolling and skinnier for when I do decide to hit the tarmac (though exploring these dirt roads on the gravel grinder, is one of the most special ways to experience rural Colombia! :D Thanks for your review!

Always used to run WTB byways in 40c, but wet German winter had me switch to the 42c resolutes. Was a bit hesitant because I thought the tread pattern would make the tire really slow on smoother ground, but that's not true at all. It's obv not as fast as a slick, but I'm running it at 18-22psi, and it's soo smooth. Looking forward to try some René Herse Snoqualmie Pass 44c Slicks for the summer

Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M in 700c 40mm work much better and even hold up okay when it gets muddy. Am kinda in love with my Ritchey WCS Shields (650b x 52....true story they say “52” on the sidewall, how dare they!) for rougher gravel. Prefer them to the GravelKing SKs. The Ritchey aren’t too heavy and they plenty fast and grippy. Having said that, still prefer something smoother (like the Byways) when things are smoooooooooooth. That’s why the lord created quick release.

While I like the durability (pretty high) and price point (pretty low) of Gravelking SKs, they have one supremely aggravating quality- they pick up, and throw, more stones than any tire I’ve ever ridden. I’ve dubbed them “Gravelslings”! If you’re riding behind them, prepare to eat it. If YOU are riding them, you’ll likely end up with a lot of rocks in your pockets. I’m very intrigued by Panaracer’s recently released Gravelking SS. Haven’t tried them yet though. The smoother center likely will avoid the gravel sling effect. I’m currently on my second set of Specialized Pathfinder Pros. I first had the 38s and I am now running the 42s. When first switching to the 42s, the extra weight was very noticeable. I actually prefer the 38s for the riding I do. Either way, the smooth center is excellent for the riding here on the front range in CO where there generally is quite a bit of pavement en route to the gravel.

Hi Chuck, I’ve had a year (4500 km)on Gravelking SS’s in 44 and had Pathfinder Pro’s in 38 previously. I ride mostly long distance on bikepaths and hard pack gravel. I did like the Panaracer’s but am amazed by the SS. They do have a tendency to want to wash out on a high speed turn on chunkier gravel - once you know you anticipate. But wow do they roll fast. I’ve worn them out and have replaced them with the SS+. Have been curious of the Ultradynamico Cava though.. I do hope you try out the Semi-Slicks. Cheers!

While I’m sure there are wild trails in abundance here in Wisconsin, we also have a lot of tame gravel. Many, many miles of bike trails that were made from abandoned train tracks. The gravel tends to be fine and tightly packed, and a skinny tire road bike works perfectly on them. Fenders? Well, it rains here periodically but there are plenty of dry days, so fenders are a choice. Cyclists who ride every day rain or shine probably would want them, but possibly would only install them on wet days.

Great vid! learnt a lot here! question about the older bikes, you said measure the front fork, does that mean running a bigger tyre up front and a smaller tyre in the back? like bmx style? i think thats what you meant but just wanted to double check. loving the vids as always, cheers!

As you say, a lot of info but good solid stuff. Maybe my sweet spot for tyre width is a little wider than yours, say 50mm and up, assuming it fits my frame. For any noobies here, if you measure your fork or chainstays with a view to fitting wider tyres, make sure you leave 3mm each side for mud build up (unless you ride in the Sahara) otherwise you won't be riding very far. The mudguards on the Wilier look great. Can you tell us the make?

I switch from Maxxis Rambler 45mm to Panaracer SS 43mm depending on the route!
