Further update Some may know that bad satellite positioning on our Pioneer unit led us to look for a better solution, especially after our nightmare on that hill in IOM episode 5. This evening I tested the Garmin Glo 2 with our Pioneer system under dense tree canopy and it was fast and accurate. Before the position would be off in the fields. The Garmin Glo 2 was connected to my phone by Bluetooth and the iPhone was connected to the Pioneer by USB. Our next Isle of Man episode will be out on Saturday 👍
Hi, Ken and Carol. Really useful info. I'm going to get my non-sim Ipad up and running with a Garmin Glo2 in our van. Thanks for your brilliant content. We really enjoy watching it. 🙂
Wow!! The Garmin Glo 2 is super impressive with that accuracy. I'm all for a bigger screen using an I pad and the both brackets are excellent 👌 Really good info , thanks for posting 👍 👍 👏😎
Good point about air vents for cooling the device / ipad - I made sure my phone mount is in front of the middle air vents. As when mounted it runs a bit warmer than normal with sat nav running and is usually wirelessly charging. So good to do - blow cold air on back of it especially on warm days.
I wanted to let you two know just how much I am enjoying watching your adventures! I wanted to learn more about the @ is what got my attention to start watching. But now I am going back a watching your other videos too. As a couple you really seem to enjoy each other and it shows. Watching from Atlanta, GA. USA
Thanks for the info, that glo 2 looks great, hopefully it will work with an old ipad which we have sitting in a drawer because its too old for the newer apps 👍
Please know we love your videos and are on our 3rd time around with the Ireland series!!!! But again, we watch them on our TV so we can't hit Like so feel I need to let you know - we love them all .........really LOVED Wales!!!!!! You guys are AWESOME.......my husband and I go through withdrawal when you don't do a new post.......finally found the answer - we just watch and re-watch the older ones!!!!♥
Hello Mary. Don’t feel guilty about not hitting the like button. Watching them more than once more than makes up for that 😁. There are quite a few more coming down the pipeline ❤️
Hello you two. Thanks so much for this video. Was seriously considering upgrading my iPad. I didn’t know such a gadget was available. Brilliant. So helpful and enjoyable. Thank you. Graham and Ellie 🧙♂️
Hi Carol, hi Ken! My family and me are loving your channel, we especially like when you stop for takeaways. 😂 We'd love to see a video of your top 10 restaurants and takeaways that you have tried on your British travels! Can't wait to see your new videos. Love from the Spurle family! 😁
Using a NV200 as well, i've found the well priced and minimalist YOSH phone mount works a treat - I live and travel in the Scottish Highlands, so can first hand say that the magnetic phone mount holds up to the toughest and bumpiest of roads. Happy to share more info on it if useful (obviously it's for phones and not iPads, although my iPhone 11 is about the size of a tablet!)
Very interesting Ken. Never heard of this device and I have an older iPad Pro without SIM so maybe something to seriously consider. I’ll know when I get out and about for longer periods … starting next Monday 😁. Also what a great gift from your subscribers. ATB to you both.
First challenge is mounting the pad. I was lucky we had the indentation for the shelf I think. The big screen is great. Easy on my eyes. RU-vid is wonderful in the way viewers reach out to help. 👍
Hi Carol Ken,very interesting blog wear did you get the GPS BOX and how much please,so nice of them people to make you a bracket to fit your I-pad dose that go into you CD player ?,take care keep safe,John 👏🇬🇧👀🌹🥂🥂
Could you just have use vent mounted magnetic mounted for your iPad? That what I did with my car. It’s quick to set up, easy to remove the device when you Dont need it, and the tablet stays steady and secure in place.
Alright, I'm sure I'm not the first to comment but, however, here goes. Has anyone mentioned before of the striking facial likeness you bear to Irish musician and folk singer Christy Moore? That apart, as a would be but failed campervanner, I am thoroughly enjoying your channel. Makes wonderful bedtime watching especially when you visit areas I know well like North Wales.🐨
@@LifeistooshortCK it dose fit perfectly. The small square will hold it place on the bracket. I smashed a screen on a sat nav when I swerved trying to avoid a dog that run out onto the road.
@Life is too short Hi Ken, found it very difficult to understand what you were saying driving in the Van. Just great to get those brackets, people can be so nice.
Hiya! Lovely video, just a quick question... How do you know it is connected to the Garmin as opposed to the device GPS? Do you need to turn of location settings on the ipad? Or does the GLO2 over ride the system gps..? Thanks
Just make sure the GLO2 is connected in Bluetooth settings. If it’s using the GLO2 the position will be updated much more often than when using the inbuilt GPS so it’s more accurate with very little lag.
No we tend to use it live tethered to my phone. Most major roads have excellent mobile service so we rarely have an issue. When out in the sticks I tend to use the Pocket Earth app with downloaded maps.
I bought one of these based on your vid and it works great (thank you). However, my ipad seems to drink it's charge when using it with google maps. It seems to want more juice than the charger is putting in, so doesn't last long. As mine is an older ipad, i'm sure that is the issue.
We tried a few iPads. I wanted to use an old 12.9 pro but just couldn’t keep it charged long enough. I went into the Apple Store looking for a charger for the car that would work and was advised that the only thing that would not run down no matter how long the journey was the base model ipad so we got one of those. One thing you could try although I have not tested it is using the actual charger you use at home plugged into a small inverter. I carry a 300 watt inverter and I am sure it would power an iPad charger easily. The downside is fan noise from the inverter but you could always shield it in a box. 👍
@@LifeistooshortCK I’m late to the game, but if you turn off “Background App Refresh” in your settings (like I do on my iPhone) you’ll save a good bit on power consumption. It’s not perfect but it helps.
Really interesting. Now wondering if connecting the Glo 2 to an iPhone plugged into the van's Car Play unit would also improve things or would the wired connection still mean it switches to the after market unit...
I tried connecting the Glo 2 via bluetooth Euan but the radio unit does not see the Garmin Glo 2. Didn’t think of trying what you suggested so I will give that a go. I have a feeling though that car play is making use of the Pioneers own GPS.
@@euansemple5598 I tested it and it does seem to work well with the Glo 2 paired to my phone and the phone connected to the Pioneer via USB. Having said that I still don’t rate the Pioneer unit at all.
We just bought a new van and have now stopped using an ipad. To be honest our new system from Fiat is nowhere near as convenient as an ipad but the satnav does take into account vehicle dimensions.
I bought a Garmin GLO 2 myself to use with my iPad wifi only model. I have a question for you. When GLO 2 is powered ON and PLUGGED IN, does your status LED work properly? Does it seem like it is alternate blinking between green & orange?? I had my GLO2 charging for almost 4 hours and that is what I see. As per the manual that means "Faulty battery or system error". I read from one review that it appears like that but is working normally. So I am wondering how yours is?
We switched to the latest cheapest iPad a while back as we struggled to keep it charged on long journeys. It does not need the GLO so I don’t have it anymore to check. Sorry.
I am not clear how having a SIM card in the iPad makes positioning faster or more accurate It is possible to use the mobile 'phone signals from two or more 'phone masts to provide an estimate of position but it is much less accurate than GPS
The sim models have a dedicated gps chip in them like your phone but the non sim models just use an estimate from WiFi signals. When you are out in the sticks that soon fails and my iPad Pro was useless. It has nothing to do with the sim slot, I mentioned the slot as being the easiest way for people to know if their iPad is likely to work or not. Mind you any mobile device paired with the Garmin Glo 2 works super fast and better accuracy and speed than our phones.
Hi, the bracket is a great idea, just wondering if anyone has made something similar that would fit the Peugeot / Fiat dashboard ? I know the newer versions have a purpose made pop up holder but mine has the older fixed type, it does have a very strong clip designed to hold paper maps I think.. anyone got any ideas on how this could be utilised ?
hi Steve. Not familiar with the vehicle but all you really need is enough flat surface to stick a shelf to combined with some good non slip mat. make sure that the iPad sits well clear of any air bags. 👍
@@LifeistooshortCK Hi Ken I downloaded the free version and it’s looking you to pay for every map you download. Do you pay for each map on the paid version (pro) ?
@Jimireland well I am surprised to hear that. I can’t test that as it knows I have the paid version. I used the free version for ages and all the maps were free. They don’t actually make the maps, they are free from an open source project. Just looked on the App store. Yep they have changed.
I might try the paid version at some point, hope I don’t have to pay again for each map I download lol. We’ve been following you and Carol for a while, catching up on your old videos, one every night during our dinner, can’t wait to see how many wee roads you take in the new van lol
Hi, can I ask does the GPS device allow Google maps to give you up to date traffic Info. I have a tablet with no sim which allows me to use Google maps but no traffic info.
In a crash that iPad would go hurtling off the dashboard at high velocity into the passenger compartment. No automotive manufacturer would dream of putting that design on the market .
You are right but then again everything we all put in our vehicles goes flying in a crash. I have attended plenty of those in my job. The best strategy is to avoid crashes in the first place.
Its all well and good to say that , but accidents happen and are usually unavoidable otherwise they wouldn’t happen , and true any unsecured items will fly off , but would you be happy to have a 1.5 lb hammer lying on your dashboard? That’s the weight of an iPad Pro.
Well you obviously haven’t seen as many crash tests as I have , this particular design is simply dangerous, and whatever risks you are prepared to take with yourself and your passengers you should not be recommending it to the General Public.
Well we have your comments for them to read, my acceptance of our own personal risk and the warning I gave myself in the pinned comment. People can make their own decisions. Maybe you should write to the manufacturers of all the various iPad brackets on offer that will also not withstand a major crash.
