Damn Walter, you make the most professional videos out there with great lighting, great audio, and appropriate subject matter. Keep up the great work. I always appreciate when you have a new video come out. Stay safe from Tucson

Do you think you can get as good an edge with the belt grinder as you can with one of these types of sharpeners? I have watched your belt grinder sharpening video with the clamp for the knife.

I'd say, even with the nice rig, learn to sharpen freehand. It will give you another skill and make you appreciate even more how easier it is when you have a good sharpening system.

I have a couple of questions. (1) Does it give you the same angle on each side of the knife? I ask because the Ruixin Pro, which is a lot like your sharpener, doesn't. (2) When you adjust the height, does it maintain that height? Again, I ask because the Ruixin Pro doesn't. There's just not enough force on that set screw to hold it securely. I had to grind a little flat on the bar to get the set screw to hold.

Did the same on the Ruixin screw. Keep in mind it's good to adjust the angle higher just a little bit when going up in grits, at least for diamond stones that is.

No, I have the most expensive kit from hapstone, and I have to find a trick to have same angle on each side. some times may be because of the placement of the knife into the pliers, but there is also something to fix, and it is a cons, for sure.

I nearly went w/ the R-2 by Hapstone, but finally decided on the KO-3 by TSPROF. Both are an investment, but we know we get what we pay for these days and I am appreciating the overall quality. Thanks, Walter...

Another great video, as usual. Some kudos and a bit of (possible) heresy. Kudos: I like the sharpener, especially that they use standard stone design, and the dedicated leveling spots. very well thought out. Heresy: I get shaving sharp results with my (gasp!) Ken Onion Edition WorkSharp. :D Keep up the great work!

9:13 Look at all that frame flex and vibration ... not good for precision edges. Color me underwhelmed. Design wise, im not a fan of the clamp approach, as it doesnt work as well with flexible unbolstered blades ... and I HATE bolsters. I prefer a system like the EdgePro, where the blade lays FLAT on a shelf with just the edge hanging off. Much less flex that way, and no scuffing of the spine.

Just dont use a lot of pressure. Let the abrasive do the work. Clamp is just to hold it there. Free hand its easier especially if you convex. “Professional sharpening” is a hilarious concept.
@codyconrad7333
@codyconrad7333 9 месяцев назад
I own this system and many others. It's well made, but the design puts the knife flip plain over the base. This makes it impossible to flip a. Long blade without the tip hitting the base. I recommend the base post be mover forward to clear the base. But the company Rep said it would throw the balance off. In reality the downward sharpenning action weight lifts the back of the sharpenner, so calling Bull on that note. I think they designed the clamp positions to prevent larger blades and force the user ro purchase the next size up.

This is ridiculous. Too far from being ultimate. Even the kinematics with a central pivot is already obsolete, there is a much better schema.
@Norhther
@Norhther 6 месяцев назад
Any suggestion.?
@Micro-Moo
@Micro-Moo 6 месяцев назад
@@Norhther Yes. On RU-vid, you can find some sharpeners using alternative kinematics. They don't have a central pivot and are based on a linear bearings instead. They are much better. With this schema, the cutting edge angles do not depend on the thickness of the abrasive stone or plate. Moreover, when the amount of removed metal is considerable, it also doesn't change the angles. Also, you can find reasonable priced linear bearing assemblies with matching shafts on the market, so the schema can be a matter of DIY. I have a list of RU-vid pages with such examples, and, if you are really interested, I could share them.

Almost $200 US?! Most people make these from random scrap material. At worse a cheap trip to the hardware store would give you the parts needed. Instead of a fancy clamp, a wood shelf to rest the knife on and a couple spring clamps. Lots of examples on YT. At best I would price this at $50.
@cavemandanwilder5597
@cavemandanwilder5597 11 месяцев назад
The reason these rigs cost more than $50 is that the precision and design are far superior to what “most people” can make in their home shops. And yes, that precision and design very much does show up in the quality of the edge you can achieve. If you only want a DIY $50 edge, that’s fine - you do you. Just understand that you’re not going to get the same result as you could get with a $200 setup.

@@ianstewart119 I am a maker, I have made a similar sharpening jig, and many other tools for that matter that work perfectly fine. It's not that if you spend the money it's "automatically" better. If you are a machinist and you have a mill, and a lathe, you can make a high quality knife sharpening jig like this for your $50 in material. I'm not a machinist and the jig i made works for me but not with the precision that a well thought out design that is mass produced in a factory setting will get you. By the way I haven't used that jig in a couple of years, and I have other jigs that work just as well, but I sharpen most of my knives on my 2x72 freehand. I get really scary sharp knives freehand pretty damned fast, and I have my own leather strop that I made that brings it to a polished finish after progressing to a 3,000 grit belt. That all being said, I'm not a fan of sending my money overseas to any country. By the way, are you a maker, or own lots of knives that you sharpen regularly? I would suggest getting a motorized sharpening system of some kind for you. Just my thoughts from a guy in Tucson
