I miss those old merc's .. you hardly see them nowdays in germany, almost all of them got shipped to africa / eastern europe or got destroyed in the german version of "cash for clunkers" or "abwrackprämie" -_- perfectly good cars got trashed in return for a little bit money if you bought a new one..

Not unusual here in Sweden and probably the rest of the nordic countries to put any engine in a 740, they are plentyful and still pretty cheap, but thats a mercedes diesel in it
Diesel vehicles may put out a lot of visible smoke but they are much more enviromentally friendly comparer to gasoline engines. The black smoke are particles that just land on the ground.
