On the rating scale I have to give your build a 10+........ You did not miss a dang thing when it comes to power in your truck and trailer...... I also loved the conversion on your truck build to get the ultimate performance off road..... Love the trailer build and you thought of everything there also.... How did you know to build a set up like this cause you got that PRO KNOWLEDGE going on big time..... I also liked your communications network you put in that truck , very impressive..... I am not an expert but I have researched the hell out of how to have the ultimate , sustainable , dependable bug out rig..... Well you just showed me a lot even though I could not afford what you have I am very impressed ..... Happy and safe motoring dude

That is a really wonderful piece of equipment you have created there! I have been very interested in the Unimogs for years and I am also planning to travel the world and live/work in a camper full-time, so your setup has my utmost attention. I have some questions: 1 - I have already traveled a lot (also in a camper) and I have learned that stealth is really important - in order to be able to sleep parked in a regular neighborhood, parking lot, etc. and in order to prevent being robbed. So, I wouldn't want to draw the attention you are getting. It seems that with your setup you are limited to designated camping sites ($$$), or extreme off-grid situations (far away in the wilderness), but nothing in between that traveling through countries mostly entails (imho). 2 - (related to my previous question) I have always had in mind that I need to be able to access the driving cabin directly from the sleeping area (without having to step outside) so I can immediately drive off in case of threats from the outside. 3 - It looks to me that fuel must be one of your biggest costs when traveling considering the mileage you mentioned in your previous video (part 1). Aerodynamics and weight are important factors in fuel consumption, yet place your bikes on top and the back of your truck (not the trailer) is mostly empty yet heavy. 4 - Those big tires are nice, of course, but are they widely available worldwide? (the guy from The Road Chose Me has very convincing arguments for choosing regular sized tires) You have obviously thought out everything very carefully, so I am really very interested what your thoughts are on those issues. Thank you very much!
@drivetheglobe
@drivetheglobe 3 года назад
I typically agree most of the time with Dan Grec- he is right about tires. These tires are actually stock size and yes are available in most of the world. Unlike Jeep ones they are pretty rugged too so likely to not suffer issues as frequently. Fuel is one of the larger costs, I don't push it and rarely drive to the limits of the vehicle. 12 mpg is acceptable to me- certainly not great but not drastically worse than many other trucks that may be under overloaded conditions. I didn't do too much better in my series Land Rover across africa and that is a little 4 cyl. Agree, it would be nice to access the cab directly from living space. Luckily- and probably more importantly is to always avoid situations that seem like they might be sketchy in the first place. The idea of jumping in the cab and outrunning someone is probably a little too movie script. They will catch you anyway. But seriously, it would be nice but I have never experienced a situation where I needed that yet... Stealth is both good and bad. In America- yes, I wish I could just hide in a parking lot like a sprinter van. In developing countries however, my experience has been that I am going to stick out anyway, therefore, I might as well really stick out and by doing so I create so much attention that the bad guys are not interested. Long ago, because of the big truck- I decided orange, pink or yellow were the only options that obviously did not look military. Hope this answers your questions somewhat, thanks for watching.

@drivetheglobe
@drivetheglobe 3 года назад
I did build it for two, the bed folds out so that it will sleep two although I rarely do that as I am by myself right now. Greatly depends on how much gear you carry in the truck and what standard of life you are looking for on the road.

Can you provide a dimensional drawing of the M1101 trailer with your size measurements? Awesome job, I’d like to roughly build my trailer to these dimensions and size configurations. I’m mostly interested in general dimensions; overhang, height, length, box frame size. Thanks!
@drivetheglobe
@drivetheglobe 3 года назад
Basically I created a 6 inch overhang on each side, extended the overhang in the front by 16 inches and added about 18 inches in the back. Ceiling height is 6 foot 3 inches. I also extended the tongue by several feet to accommodate the truck.

Do you have generater for the batteries to keep them charged and if so is the diesel separated from from the tank you drive with, like when people drive a motherhome the diesel they use to drive the motherhome with is the same diesel they use for the generater?. Hopefully that question made sense.

Batteries are generated via solar, they do charge while driving from the alternator as well. No generator though.

Dear Michael. Let me express my honest excitement about the concept and about the job done. I'm sure you're aware that a great number of vehicles of such a kind never see a real journey even if they are fully assembled and ready to hit the road. Indeed, there's a bunch of circumstances which are required to make this dream come true. I congratulate you on this. I'm living it myself and, hopefully, I'll have my own truck finished in just a few months. Perhaps, someone have already asked you this question here but still I wish to know your opinion. One of the things needed for a long journey is to afford it. Surely, I don't expect you to tell me about your personal source of income. But i would appreciate any advice about living your home for months and make a living. Appreciate and see you on the road.

Not really sure, it has been a lot of work over the years though. The next owner will surely benefit and get a great deal as you will see it go up for sale shortly. I have another "project" truck that will be replacing it that I am very excited to share about soon.

You have done a very nice job with your build. I hope you make at least some of your money back in the sale.(I am sure you will) Good luck with your next build. If you are ever in Massachusetts come visit me and you can stay with us or park in our yard if you would like. New England is beautiful if you have never been here I think you'll love it.@@drivetheglobe

@@drivetheglobe then why are all the fittings and fixtures uneven and wonky, and an overall poor finish on everything in the caravan?

@@alandean9674 Well, I guess I dont notice that nor do most people. Life is too short, Im no professional caravan builder- I'd rather be out on the road exploring and meeting nice people.

@@drivetheglobe well I can appreciate that, it's just with such an expensive rig you'd expect a better finish. I would get rid of that trailer all together and redo the Unimog. Any way good luck I wish I could afford one.

All of that power and redundancy in your power system and very little Comforts of home... no kitchen, no real lounging area, a toilet system that really doesn't allow you to be off grid for very long... it's just confusing how there is so much technology and input of resources into creating this rig... and the result is so little like actual functional home-space. And what's the point of all those colorful cans for decoration in the bathroom and in the cab part???
@drivetheglobe
@drivetheglobe 3 года назад
So after living in this set up for a year most of what you say was not really an issue. I live to be outside, so the cooking and lounging most often takes place there. Not sure what toilet system would really last longer. There are options- black tanks that need to be dumped, composting and burning toilets that are cool but if you have actually used them come with a whole host of other issues and power problems. And the cans- they simply were decoration to remind me of my ex home area a little. Having said all of that, I have moved into another vehicle now- which does have a kitchen and more room. Still spend most of my time outdoors though.
@spiritflower6640
@spiritflower6640 3 года назад
@@drivetheglobe sure I appreciate that you spend most of your time outside, understandably! and thanks for explaining about the many colorful cans ;) I don't know where in the world you are right now and if you're doing mostly off-roading or highway driving but it seems like a good composting setup would have the most longevity... It is really impressive and cool that you built a lot of your rig and obviously are really into the upgrades and the vehicle specifications and Power Systems specifications.... it just be cool to have more information about how the way that you did your rig, how that meets your needs for how you live your life and what you do... it'll be interesting to see your future videos on your world travels!😊🤙
