I hope this tutorial will help you modify your own Gaggia classic with PID for better temperature control. I have made a Parts list, Wiring diagram, and a PID settings screen so that you can tune your new PID with these settings. Let me know in the comments and hit the thumbs up and subscribe if you like this video. I will talk about the power switch hack and some upgrades I did in the next video. Thank you!

@@thinkertinkering3853 I did not create any diagram for the second SSR. Ewejin Tee demonstrated a good diagram in this video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ztvDKt2Zz6c.html The only supplement to that, if using the xmt7100 modified as Damian indicated here, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WYm6hDPqtgA.html is to run pin 4 and 5 to the second relay for the steam thermostat terminals. I only used the negative terminal, pin 5, to the second relay because as Damian indicated elsewhere, the positive of pin 10 and 4 is constant on, and only negative pin 9 and 5 is switched. So I ran one wire from pin 10 to positive of both relays!

@@thinkertinkering3853 Also, I connected my thermocouple as Damian did in his video because I used a k-type thermocouple versus a pt100 type, so it’s wired differently and you have to use a different type setting in the settings menu, if you use a k-type thermocouple as I did.

@@threehanded8853 I tried that today and now my Gaggia does not heat up anymore (neither when turned on nor when steam knob additionally switched on). That's great to hear my video helped! To answer your question, No the current setup doesn't control any of the steam temperature. But you'll be able to monitor the steam temp increasing when you hit the steam switch. You should then steam your milk within 140-160C degrees mark. Good luck!

Hi. Thank you for the vid. Very clear instructions. Just need to confirm the pid settings. Do you enter all those values manually? Or do you just set the temperature to 103 and start the autotune? When you brew to you enter the lower temperature - ie 93 or 94c (the desired temp for most coffees)? Thank you so much.

Appreciate the feedback! Yes it's better to go through all the menus and enter them manually. Some of the values are preset from the factory so you'll have to scroll through. After entering all the values, I set my temperature to 103˙C and just leave it to do its thing. The PID only needs to be set up the very first time only. @EweJinTee
@EweJinTee 2 года назад
Hey Erick, when I connect the piggyback to the brew switch as in Robert's video, I didn't get power to my PID and I was confused. It might be that I have modded my Eurotimer switch on the machine so that I can constantly turn on/off as I wish. Weirdly, the autotuning last only for about 2 minutes. I tried several time with auto tune as well as manually setting the parameters but nothing helped. Do you have any idea of what could be wrong?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee 2 года назад
Hi Tommaso. Thank you for the question. Temperature drop during brew is normal, as cold water flows through the brew group head, it converts water from room temperature to your desired brew temperature. -1C to -5C temp drop is normal. This is the only downside with smaller machines like the Gaggia. Larger machines will tend to have a boiler inside and temperature is monitored in the tank. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this "how to". I did this PID mod with single SSR ( Brew temp only ). I have question, is it safe to use the steam switch? Does the steam temperature has its maximum to stop heating? Because we cannot control the max steam temperature on the PID with single SSR. What happen if i swtich on the steam but did not use the steam? Will the boiler gets broken? Or it will just stop heating the boiler at certain temperature?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee Год назад
Thank you for the comments! Glad this vid helped you. The Gaggia classic comes with 2 thermostats. One is brew and one is steam. Once the switch turned on, it is controlled by a thermostat inside the boiler. It will automatically cut off heating once it reaches a certain temperature, if not mistaken that's like 145 Celcius. Your PID should be able to read the temp inside the boiler so once you hit the steam switch, you can watch it build up and cool down once it hits certain degree.

Hi there. There's nothing to apologize so don't worry about it. PID is basically a device to monitor and control temperatures. Hence, why most people use this to mod into their Gaggia machines. In my video, the Single SSR setup I have only will only manage the Brew temperature. You will need another SSR to control the Steam temperature (which is something that I'm looking into right now). Having PID to control your temperature will ensure a much efficient and stable temperature in the machine and in return, you can enjoy better espresso extraction.

@EweJinTee 2 года назад
Thank you for the compliment. If you piggyback the +/- connections from the main power supply and your main power is constantly switched on, it will turn on the PID controller all the time even though your machine is Off. So a piggyback to the rocker switch would be preferable because it only turns On when the machine is On.

hi ewejin i made the mod as directed. i see the pid is set at 103, i assume thats celsius. but when i take the temperature of the water as it goes into the cup it is 65 degrees celsius for me even though the pid is saying 103-106. what is the explanation for this? also what is the advantage of manually tuning the pid as opposed to autotuning?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee Год назад
Hey. When you're setting temperature on the PID, it does not mean that's the exact temperature that you will get in your cup. Water will travel across the boiler into the grouphead and temperature will drop. There is a certain way to measure the temperature on the grouphead but I haven't done it before as well. Check it here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6kog9_V5ci4.html I basically set my temperature based on espresso extraction taste. If it's too bitter, then it's too warm, too sour then it's too cold. It all depends on your grind size, bean and roast settings. There are a lot of variations that go into it so it's a bit complicated to define the temperature that you set on the PID. You'll have to adjust according and find the sweet spot. Hope that helps.

Hi. The PID will be able to display it's current temperature that is in the boiler. If you switch on the Steam switch, you can see that the boiler temp increases, hence it will be displayed in the PID display. Hey. I'm not too sure about that. You'll need to open up your machine after to see if all the dissasembly process is similar. Then the PID mod might work for you. i wanted to do this mod for an christmas present and wanted to add an important note about the SSR. the SSR linked in the video had an estimated 2-3 month delivery time which I didnt want to wait for so i shopped around for another SSR on aliexpress. SSRs have an input voltage type AND an output voltage type. make sure to get an SSR that has a DC input and an AC output voltage! the model you will need to search for is SSR40DA. note the suffix letters D and A. the D is for DC input voltage and the A is for AC output voltage. do NOT make the mistake i did any buy an SSR40AA. i was excited to install everything and test. got it all hooked up and found out my relay wasn't engaging the boiler because the PID sends an output of 11-12 DC volts to the SSR and my SSR only accepts AC voltage. this is the alternate seller i used www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802663181474.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.21ef1802nlE0vk&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa&_randl_shipto=US aside from my mistake, great video and thanks for creating this! your video was almost 100% spot on for my gaggia. the only thing i had to change was switch my positive PID piggyback connector to the bottom prong of the rocker switch instead of the top. just something for others to look out for when they do this. you WILL need a multimeter to test continuity and voltages as apparently not all Gaggias are made exactly the same and perhaps a little bit of electrical experience to troubleshoot if something doesn't work after completion

The wires were taken from the power rocker switch (+) and rear power supply (-) to supply power to the PID and keep it running only when the machine is turned On.
