Currently playing the Srixon ZX5. They look great, have a nice soft feel, and very consistent distance. Super happy with them, They'll stay in my bag for a long time.
As always Srixon always hits the sweet spot. Distance/Dispersion/Spin/Feel/Look....Still blows my mind that they don't get more love than they do. Forged Tec from Cobra living up to the hype here too. I've never hit them but hear nothing but love for them from a couple friends that play em.
just ordered a 5-9 set of zx5's mint condition, hit literally twice for $330 shipped, shafts arent exactly what i was going for but looking into them they may be better, i was never fit i mess with all that myself buying test clubs and stuff. But i needed an upgrade from my r7 irons from 15 years ago lol
I tried almost everything in this category earlier this year. I came down to Mizuno Pro 225, Cobra Forged Tec, and the Wilson D9 Forged. I chose the Wilson. As soft or softer than the Mizuno, as long as the Cobra, and the best dispersion for me. They feel great. I'm 72 and have the Recoil 460 ESX 460 R shaft which works great. Now trying to re-do the rest of my bag. Thanks for your great videos!
Agreed with Denis Eckert, I hit all of these and the one that impressed me the most was the Wilson D9 Forged. The one that impressed me even more was the Wilson D7 Forged (better feel for me than the D9). Wish you would have included it in the test.
Great video. In future comparisons, perhaps add the static loft beside each club name. I think that is something to keep in mind when comparing spin, carry, height and land angle.
Nice updated comparison. I’ve got a set of Pro 225’s and love them. I did have the 7 and 8 iron’s bent 1 degree weak to help with a touch more launch and spin and maintain consistent gaps (4 degrees) in the mid-short irons. I think having the correct shaft will have some influence in how a golfer will dynamically deliver the club. Additionally, a ball fitting will probably help with getting the proper launch conditions. For example, a Pro V1x would give a bit more launch and spin vs the standard Pro V1.
I got fit between the p790 and and forgetec. My spin numbers for cobras were higher. 6600rpm. Got better consistency with distance. I had to get p790s 2degrees weaker but ultimately went with the cobras because of the feel.
Really useful, along with other serious well done test videos of some of the same clubs. I am 81 and it is simply time for me to kick my ego in the butt and drop the weak lofted solid forged muscle back irons I have been playing for the past 25 years. With my swing speed now, the best I can do with a 7 iron and Pro V1X (2015 version) with a stiff shaft is ball speed 96, carry 131, launch angle 21.8, back spin 4785. That's tops. Most are shorter. My goal is to get a 140 yard or better carry. I could never stand game improvement irons when looking down on one you felt like you were playing a hot dog bun. I also felt that 7 irons with lofts as low as 26 degrees were a deceptive joke. But tests like yours show makers have really improved both the looks and technology of irons and enable one to get distance plus height, spin and steep descent angles even with strong lofts while looking down on heads that are appealing. Am being fitted this week, we shall see.
I’m rocking the Ping i525 since March, and they’ll stay in my bag for 2023! Love the distance I’m able to hit it with 5-7i, and with 8-PW I’ve been able to create great stopping power from 150 yards or less to the pin.
Callaway Rogue ST Pro. Like your testing I find it by far the best dispersion ( you lost one right - take one outlier of each and looks really good). Rogue just does really well is just about every category. It is loud but that never enters my selection for any club (my hearing sucks). I hit a crap ton of balls at my club and have key to the equipment room. I find the 790 by far the most erratic. Love betting guys on the course when I see the 790. Cheers.
I really trust these guys and welcome their videos. If I were to get one of these sets, it would be either Mizuno 225s or the one that gets the least love, Sryxon ZX5s. These have by far the best feel and go far enough. The Taylormade 790s are long but the feel is awful and they are loud! I think I would settle on Sryxon.
Another great video. Looks and feel are important to most golfers. They should get fitted, and judge for themselves. The nippon 115 would probably give a higher launch, and spin.
Nice analysis. I wonder if I find my long iron 5&6 lofts too strong and if I plan to bend them 3 degree weak to match my combo player’s iron category, is it too much to bend them 3 degree weak? Will it sacrifice performance. Thanks
I have been playing rouge St pro this year. Like them but don't love them. Really like the mizuno 225 and would also like the try zx5 when an updated versions drops in uk.
I feel there is a huge gap in the market between Game Improvement Irons and Players Distance Irons. Many players between age 30-50 don’t are looking for clubs that have forgiveness and feel without looking like game improvement shovels. Yet the choices are mostly either shovels or players distance irons with smaller heads. I don’t see many nice looking irons geared towards forgiveness AND feel. I like your videos. Some mention of head size would be helpful too.
Being fairly new to golf (5 years), I started off with cavity backs, recently just switched over to the 225s last week. I hit the ball pretty far with my speed, just wondering if I should have gone to a players non distance iron... 🤷🏾♂️
Great comparison Guys, but this category of Irons really troubles me. I have tested various Irons in the "Players distance Irons" but I don't get enough height/spin to stop the ball on Greens, my landing angle is far too shallow. So I have concluded that I just need more loft, sacrificing a little distance but managing the decent angle to get the ball to actually stop on the Greens and not smash through into the rough
Great comparison on all these! I just found out that my mizuno 225 are the lowest launch and flight. I’ve noticed they aren’t the highest launching clubs and have been wondering if I could gain some height by weakening the lofts . Any idea how many feet of height I could gain by weakening the lofts 2 degrees? My swing speed is around 77 mph with the 7 iron . Thanks for the great work you guys do in all the videos !
Seriously, How can this be the "ultimate" category? You didn't include the club that can outperform certainly most, if not all of them. The iron: Wilson D9 Forged, all day long. Superb.
Nice review, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on where the Wilson D9 forged would fit against these clubs? Also what irons would you class as just below this category but not blades? I'm a mid single digit player looking to move from game improvement Razr-x irons to a player's set but still with some forgiveness. Cheers
I’m 60 years old, swinging slower at around 80 mph 6 iron, and mid single digit handicap. I’m probably part of the demographic group that should be using an iron in this category. And I would like the distance increase along with the forgiveness. But I don’t hit down much on my irons, working on it, but I need more spin. I’m guessing I’m going to have look at the Players Cavity type irons.
Great video! Sure enjoy watching you guys. Wish you had a store in Western Canada. Great comparisons between all irons. Only thing I wouldn’t have included the Cobra, not an “apples” to “apples” true test considering the loft. I’m looking for something different for 23. Currently use G425s. Considering JPX 923 HM, or Calloway DCB. Will give some of the ones you tried a test. Looking forward to your next video. Maybe the G430s. Hint hint. 😊
Gotta say I'm really disappointed that the Wilson d9 forged didn't make it into your test. It's hot, forgiving, and looks great. It's just as good as any of these and feels better
I really enjoy watching you guys but i just wish you would spend a little less time bashing on these kind of irons for not being as muted, or as soft as mb's because we all know they arent blades. If we were all good enough to hit blades im sure we would but not everyone is blessed with the talent or time to ever get good enough for them. If you would spend more time comparing them to each other or atleast in the same class of club it would be great. I only say this because comparing any of these clubs to mb's is always going to make it sound like these irons arent as good but for most of us they are.
Thank you for that feedback Cody. We appreciate you watching. We apologize for the negative thoughts on the look and feel - that’s not what we’re going for and you’re absolutely right about them being the best clubs for so many players. We are definitely not trying t frame the sound and look of these irons in a negative light, but I can see how it is received that way. We will work to fix our presentation of these types of irons in the future. - Drew
No problem. Thanks guys. I wish I could hit blades but im just not quite consistent enough to make them make sence. I have played 3 different game improvement irons and i now play the apex 19 forged and i love the look, sound and feel but the added forgiveness far outways the slight feel and sound difference of the much smaller one piece forged irons and mb's. Keep up the great content guys!
Honorable mention, the Tour Edge c721 irons are great. I went back to your review video, the numbers were spin 4300, carry 202yds, total 213yds. I assume Thomas was swinging full speed that day. These can be purchased at $450 new ($900 originally), you can get them for less than all of these models used. I decided to give them a go and they have been fantastic. I'm sure you'll be able to get the c722s on sale soon as well. It would be really interesting to see how they compare in this test against the big dawgs, but I understand you have to just focus on those.
@@joelane2845 I am referring to the c721 review when I say he was swinging full speed as compared to swinging slower in this video. Avg club speed in the c721 video was 90mph and 130 ball speed. Higher than any of the the averages in this video at around 83 and 120. So I was admitting the difference in my comment...
I’ve seen 20 handicaps that should be using blades Because they strike their irons so pure but can’t get off the Tee-box straight and can’t get off the green without a three putt. Therefore “mid handicap” means absolutely jack crap when suppressing irons. Why is this never discussed?
Thanks for this note -- this is exactly why we generally do not group clubs into handicaps, or at least try not to. "mid-handicap" would describe the average player that would fit into these irons, but of course that does not apply to all players that would fit into these iron models
