I currently game the Callaway Rogue ST Pro AW thru 6 iron and ST Max 4 and 5 iron. I have always been a Mizuno player and sure love the looks of the 225’s. The factor for my decision was how easy the Callaways were to get airborne. I had trouble with the 225’s, I am just not good enough for them. The Callaways were just so easy to hit for me. Very forgiving while having a blade like look.
Went for a PXG fitting...currently play the PXG Gen 2 SGI irons and they are awesome...but wanted an upgrade so i was fitted with PXG Gen 4 ( P ) irons graphite shaft / 2 up lie / and a 10 gram weight instead of an 8 gram and midsize grips....all i got to say is WOW I love them...soft feeling and pure..thank you PXG...cheers from Canada
I tested 4 of these clubs at a fitting session a couple weeks ago, Callaway Rogue ST Pro / Taylormade P790 / Ping i525 and the Wilson D9 Forged and they were all lovely but the D9 performed better for me than the others. I never thought of Wilson before I went and was very much surprised with the results, fair to say they were ordered and now waiting arrival.
In all fairness the D9’s are very nice clubs, but they are not a players distance iron. Neither are PXG’s. They are game improvement irons. Its why they are slightly less cost, cavity back and strong lofted. I was fit couple months ago and picked ping 525’s. I hit most of these including D9’s. Liked D9’s very much, made final 4, but felt like i would be replacing my burner 2.0’s with newer 2.0’s. Saw really no difference. Its all marketing and word play. They are all great clubs and most important factor is what do YOU like? Everyone of these in test will hit a 7 iron 160-170, so what suits you best? My 525’s are no better than your D9’s and vice versa. Congrats on the new sticks and hope you hit em well.
Are you confusing the standard D9 with the D9 Forged? The D9s are definitely game improvement but the D9 Forged are the other side of that category and nudging into players iron category.
@@jamesbarclay9296 think Tim was talking about Fuzzy Banana, he is the one that made the comment about being confused. There are two different D9’s. I am looking at getting new Irons and the Wilsons are on my radar because of price and seems the ones that have them for the most part like them.
I was fitted recently and tried pretty much all of these. I went it hoping to get the Mizunos, PXGs, or Taylormades, followed by the Srixon and the Callaway…I do tend to have a more piercing, lower flight and needed the extra height. I wound up being fitted for the T200s even though they weren’t on my radar, nor did I care for their looks in the beginning. However, I LOVE them!
ZX5, ZX7 combo here. Recently bought the ZX5 in the 5 and 6 irons and bent them 1° weak to try out. They're incredible. Long, high, and straight flying for those long par 3s and approach shots. Much easier to launch and hold greens than the ZX7. They feel quite soft when hit near the center too (not quite as good as the 7s though) .
@@StuMarston I used to play KBS Tour S+, but in my last 3 sets of irons, I've gone Modus 3 105s. Quite stiff and stable for their weight. Mid to high flight for me.
@@BLKMeSa Thanks for the reply. I have the 105's in my current irons. I'm looking at getting the ZX5 irons and maybe going something a tad lighter. Maybe the UST Recoil 780. Everyone who has hit these irons raves about them. I don't think I've heard one person say they didn't like them.
I've played old forged Hogans & Mizuno MP-60s....some considered the best feeling irons ever made. I cant tell the difference when hitting my PXG 0211's. Still in awe these are a cast club...they are long though so if you have a decent swing speed i def recommend buying 6-GW. No need for a 5i and the gap wedge will fit perfect for your wedges on the lower end. $75/club is the best deal by far and its not close $500 for a set of these. All of these other brands your looking at almost double the cost. Dont waist your money go get fitted and get these irons
Well done. The 225 really is very nice and quite compact. That being said you need to be pretty on point when this iron is in your hands especially at the top end (4-6 irons). Off centre strikes are punished quite a bit. The sound and feel are quite good though as well as distance.
After leasing a set of Zx5s in Austin TX, I had to make a purchase. Love the Srixon clubs, long, accurate, and forgiving for a less-than-perfect striker.
Great content as always. Have been playing Mizuno mp 30 irons for years and needed a more forgiving iron because of age and ball striking problems. Was fit for the pro 225s with a slight 1-2 degree weak bend in each club for gap purposes .Excited as hell to hit these on the course. Thanks for a great review ...
I just bought the PXG 0211 DC for $79 USD per iron. I got them 2 degrees weaker with the ProjectX Cypher 5.0 50g graphite shaft & oversized Lampkin grips. Softest feeling irons I have ever hit!
Surprised you did not include other players distance irons like the mizuno 223 (also the only one available in left hand) and the pxg gen 4p (outstanding compared to others in my view in terms of sound feel and performance). I used to game the srixons and the apex but after significant testing on the course for many full rounds each and trying the 7 iron of eight different clubs I ended up at that time going with the pxg gen 3 (five forged) - and have never looked back. I get superb accuracy least drop off tight dispersion and bought them when the gen 4 came out and thus was superb value. Did try the d7 too amongst others but sound too clicky for me.
It was between the Mizunos and the Rogue St Pros for me, and I went with the Callaways. Of course Mizunos are beautiful clubs, but I just hit the sweet spot much more consistently with the Callaways, and Im not going to buy a club just for slightly better looks.
From them all I would pick the Wilson d9 forged. Soft feeling (sound) the spin rate was better than them all and the price tag for a forge set is a win win 🏆 But like you said it comes down to personal preference so never pick a set because off looks and branding, always try them out and you will be surprised what’s best for you. I went to go and try the mizuno and Taylormade two years ago and walked out with the Wilsons instead didn’t expect it plus I saved over £200🤷🏻♂️
I play i210s and love them but in the next few years as I pass 60 and my swing speed slows I would probably want these type of irons. For me looking at spin rates, performance and looks the Rogue ST, i525 and 225s stood out. As always with these types of iron when I look at the lofts throughout the bag some of them have some pretty big gaps between clubs which be worry me a bit
Do you think as a 10-12 handicapper right now I could play the Zx5. They are having a killer deal and I have saved up enough money as a 15 teen to buy them and have some left over for a new matching bag! Great video
As the lofts on modern irons get stronger and stronger, it's no surprise that they're going further and further...or is it just me that's missing something..
True, but the argument is by positioning weight back & low, they can maintain peak height & descent angle of a traditional 7 iron. That comes with a significant loss f spin (as you can see from the PXG - which really is more of a high flying 6 iron). So put that in the hands of a slower swinger and you really can have trouble holding firm greens, as their spin and descent angle will be less than someone like Joel’s. So you walk a tightrope.
Love the video. I'm playing 2019 p790 and love them they still look great but if I did buy new the mizuno 225 would be high on my list just love the look .but I think I'm staying with what I have for another season or two.
Went to try new ping irons....had them before....but no better than my current irons .. guy at AM Golf handed me a club, did not look what it was ..and it was instantly much better.. hit further, lower ball flight and great feeling off the club face, even in off centre shots ....was that good I ordered a set....cannot wait to get my hands on my MIZUNO pro 225's... Hoping they help me hit straighter and a bit further more regularly ..
@MeandMyStaffy ha ha... no, just means I've surcum to mizuno marketing. And muzino jpx have always been cheaper than ping, tm, titelist... and buddy if you play golf your a plya... but if you got mizuno it means your a real plya
Really useful vlog. I need the height and stopping power. Love Titleist clubs but not keen on the ‘plasticky’ cover on the back! Tried the i525 which good ….. too much choice and not much between them, so I guess a trip to have a brand independent fitting is the answer?
Why is the Honma TW-X not included? I have games TM P790, Ping I500, Titleist T200, and Callaway Apex Pro, and I personally think the TW-X is longer than all of these and the top line looking down is very nice and blade-like but also have the thick sole for more forgiveness. Just think many people overlook the Honma TW-X but would be surprised f they ever tried them.
I own the Gen 3 - 0311P’s and they are best irons I’ve ever owned and I’ve played most of them. I think the Gen 4 - 0311P’s would have been a better fit in this category as the 0211’s are more of a game improvement iron IMO. The 0211’s are a great value. Cheers
Good vid Joel. Bought the ZX 5's to replace my Mizuno jpx 900 hot metal when my handicap started coming down last year and I couldn't be happier. Very consistent, soft feeling and the distance drop off is minimal.
I have a question for a future rules of golf video. There is a rule that you can’t change clubs during a round of golf but is there a rule that says you can’t change loft on your driver during a round? If you have an adjustable loft club of any kind, and the tools to change it on the fly, can you do this during a round or is that prohibited? Thanks in advance.
Yes, there is a rule against changing loft. You can tighten the screw if the head becomes loose, but you cannot change the settings, once the round starts, unless it breaks during ‘normal’ play, in which case you could replace the broken club with another and it does not have to be the same spec, if I remember right..
I just ordered my set a week ago and they're due in tomorrow. I actually went with the 6-G because of how strong the lofts are. For the money and quality, idk how the 0211's can be beat.
@@wnfakind9197 forgiveness is great, honestly suits high handicap golfers well. Really flys off the face even if u dont get a perfect strike on the ball
@@wnfakind9197 They feel very forgiving honestly. I shoot in the 90s and while they do look like blades I feel like I can hit them just as well as my buddies hot metal pros. If forgiveness is the only thing holding you back I’d say get them. They feel amazing and are plenty forgiving.
You don't include any of the DTC companies like Hogan, Tacomo, Haywood, New Level, or Sub 7p Or Component companies like Golfworks and Hireko. Is there any particular reason for that?
I’m a 0 hdcp and I got the 225 and came from t100 s and the 225 are longer and more forgiving after 10 rounds going to stick with 225 for the season I think
I wonder why you are reviewing the 2019 Cobra Forged Tecs? They are the oldest set in your lineup and the new versions come out in 2 weeks. I think this is a bit of a disservice to Cobra.
They are sensational clubs though. Still look and play as good as anything in the test really. Amazing how good the range of players distance irons is these days. Never been stronger
@@cameronloveless1751 No doubt. I’ve been playing them since Jan 2020. For me, the only irons that can replace the Cobras are the new version coming out this month.
@@sshadow2 100% agree! Cobra as a brand doesn’t seem to get the credit it deserves. I’ve been fitted for my clubs and tested everything and had a completely open mind yet here I am with a full bag of Cobra clubs bar putter.
Question☝️ -how many Gap-Wedges, you need -which gaps in yards between a 9 to 8 to 7 to 6... irons🤷🏻♂️ For me, these ar delofted clubs, with to big gaps... mostly beginning with a 9 iron loft.. makes no sense 🤷🏻♂️..for me
For most people in the category to use this type of iron, you would be hitting them 1 club longer across the set. I'm a 12 handicap and have just ordered a set of T200's 5-GW. The Gap wedge I expect to hit about the same distance as my current 9 iron....then I'll have 3 wedges 52, 56, 60 instead of just 56 and 60 that I've been carrying the last couple years. I was playing a very traditional lofted set Mizuno JPX 921 Tour....so it will be an adjustment for sure - but I'm hoping to get just a bit more distance than my current set, and more importantly, consistency of distance on off-centre hits. Mis-hits going 5-10 yards less should make for more pars than mis-hits going 15-20 yards less. Fewer sand saves and long pitch shots required per round I expect will save some strokes. Not every mid-handicap player is in that range for the same reason. If you're a player that hits your irons long enough, consistent enough, and have the proper launch conditions, and landing angle etc., then hitting it further on it's own may not be much of an advantage. However there is something to be said for swinging a shorter shafted club coming into the greens giving more control than a longer club. Hitting a 7 like you would normally hit a 6 (or 8 like a 7...etc.) should give you just a bit better dispersion on average
How are the Ben Hogan PTX Pro irons not on this list. O…probably because they are not a mainstream brand and don’t pay for your advertisements. Interesting.
