Thank you for this thoroughly thoughtful and practical comparison between those two products. I have never owned an action camera before, but am in the market for one soon, and thus have been watching countless hours of reviews such as yours. Your presentation was by far the best breakdown and thoughtful of all the ones I've watched.. I was too tired to post a comment after watching it last night. But by the end my mind was made up about which of the two to buy but I thought I'd wait to see what the GoPro 12 might offer due to social speculation of its imminent release. And then this morning it all came together when Phillip Skraba posted an underwhelming GoPro 12 initial impression on his channel. I will now be the owner of an Osmo Action 4 for ground media, to blend with my DJI Mini 3 Pro for the sky, which I've been enjoying for the last 6 months. I've watched videos of your before, all good, but this was the one that got me onboard as a subscriber. I'll be digging into your past productions as time allows, and looking forward to more insightful future presentations across the full spectrum of interests.
This means a lot. It's really easy for people to write dislikes or criticisms on peoples channels, so the praise is very motivating. Thank you for taking the time to give me your feedback.
@@amandaburleson2035 you can do that, but there’s a reason Go Pro releases iterations so often and DJI is less frequent. DJI just makes a better, more forward thinking product. They’ve always been about two steps ahead of GoPro. The first DJI Action beat them to having a screw on lens so that you could replace a broken lens or screw on an ND filter lens. It also had the front and rear camera first. Even the DJI gives you longer film times on their batteries (DJI gives you up to 170min at 1080p, while GP11 gives you up to 137min at same resolution). Why always have to keep upgrading a GoPro when the DJI will give you more life of product for the same price?
@@amandaburleson2035 Are u serious? "barely any difference in low light"??? 6:11 Infact it's barely any difference in day light, obvious different in low light.
As a mountain biker, the DJI will be my new camera! Plenty of reasons, but the main one is the low light. Those low light tests you conducted showed so much more dynamic range… the GoPro looked like there was no information left in the shadows at all. This is frustrating when editing a scene deep in the woods while riding. It just looks terribly muddy. Nice job DJI. Sorry GOPRO
Have just come from another review (dplama) and he had problems with the stabilisation on his bike. Not sure if he just had a dodgy camera but I will be holding off to see if it is an actual problem. Also, not being able to easily grab a frame from footage is a pain for me. Hopefully something that will be added to the app in the near future.
There will be no good pictures in poor lighting. This is a video ad, I have a gopro 11 and it shoots much better at night 🤣 you need to set it to 1080 to make the picture brighter
I was about to then I realised it was slowly going out of stock in stores near me so I did a bit of digging and it was because the action 4 was imminent. Just ordered my action 4 adventure combo about 10 mins ago 😎
Excellent video. Action 4 looks really good and has some real advantages over Hero 11. I still found myself slightly preferring the Hero 11 pop and dynamic range in most of the side by sides. Definitely a big difference in the color profiles on each. Would you say the Action 4 has a more accurate color representation?
Great review and detailed info... It would really help if you kept one of the cameras on the left or right, instead of constantly swapping them back and forth.
Action 4 seems to add a lot of digital sharpening. What was your camera settings? High, standard or low? Would be nice to see a footage with low and professional sharpening in post production.
As a GoPro user from way back, plus the 10/11, and I also own the Insta360 X3, Go 3, and Mini 3 Pro drone, you sold me on the Action 4. It looks like a big upgrade from the Hero 11, all around. Honestly, a huge positive for me that some might think is trivial is how easy it is to mount everywhere. I despise GoPro's mounting system. The GoPro is also absolutely terrible in low-light(I found this out in the Paris Catacombs), but after seeing your low-light video on the Action 4, I think DJI is over-selling what it actually does. That being said your review was about as good as it gets and I'm glad I found it, as I hadn't seen your stuff before. No worries, I'm subbed now and I'll be buying the Action 4 through your affiliate link. Do you have an Amazon affiliate link? Thanks!
Great video and comparison. Request for the future - please be more consistent in left/right placement of the compared products. It would be a lot easier to follow if the same model would stick to the same side for the whole video. Both in the cams footage and their external views (UI, ...).
Dammit..Gopro Hero 11 got completely blown out of the window by Action 4. I think it's time for me to switch to DJI..as Ive been using DJI Wireless mics for a while now so why not use the camera as well.. I don't think Gopro hero 12 will come anywhere close to action 4 tbh. Im switching.
Great video as always! Question: can you set a time for the Action 4 to automatically turn on and start recording a time-lapse? That's a feature I love with GoPros that I haven't seen from DJI yet.
thanks for all of the details and review but please keep left and right videos consistent. it's confusing to see dji on left then right. dji is slimming for people lol, nice
Still on the fence here. My Osmo Action 3 is gone under warranty because of that darn focus issue. Not to mention the Audio clipping when using it as a Motovlogging cam. Almost 9 months since purchase and not able to utilize it. I'll wait till a proper user review comes out for the OA4
Damn, I already liked the Action 3, but the Action 4, even though it's not a huge upgrade, it looks very promising, especially because DJI updates their stuff over time. The night recording on the Action 4 is very impressive as far as I can tell
Video would've been better if you had just kept one side of the footage to the same camera instead of switching it back and forth. It made it confusing to watch. Other than that, the low light capability of this new sensor is quite an impressive improvement. The Gopro seems laughably bad in comparison.
Can somebody please educate me? I don’t understand when he’s talking about sensor sizes, he first says the go pro is 1/1.9 then vs the larger sensor of 1/1.3 but how is that larger??
Gopro software is so bad it's impossible to use one even semi professionally. I'm definitely getting the Osmo Action 4 as I have never had any issues with the previous 3. Only thing I hoped is that they would integrate the wireless receiver to the camera itself as it is not waterproof after that usb dongle is installed. Also the dongle needs TAPE to stay on as the USB-C port is definitely not made to hold it in action situations.
Action 4 is a no brainer...if you have years using gopro like me you are sick and tired of all the hiccups you encounter while using gopro especially while traveling. Ima switch to DJI especially that i have the wireless mic to use with it.
You don't need a Media Mode on GoPro to connect external mic. There is a small adaptor for external mic for that. Media Mode really is for vlogers who need to user mic with other accessories, like light, external screen, etc..
To me the sensor is the reason to upgrade. Nothing else. I still use the action and except for the sensor, nothing needs upgrading. Horizon stab is new to me but seems like a great function.
It's crazy that GoPro *still* has not fixed the freezing and crashing bugs through several generations of their action cam at least back to the 7 Black. That fact keeps me with DJI. Plus, I love the Quick Switch feature of the Osmo Action.
@@WaqManVR It isn't the memory card. At all. I only have used the ones specifically recommended by GoPro. Please do a little search on RU-vid or Google about the legendary freezing and crashing on GoPros from the Hero 7 onward. It's GoPro's fault and it's probably baked into their processor, which means no firmware update can fix it.
minutes 6:04 - I need to understand if both of them in that panoramic shot of the buildings are both with hypersmooth off and if they have the maximum FOV? hyperview for gopro or superview? while dji is at maximum fov in that shot?
Really good video, thanks. I am surprised that you let the Go Pro off so lightly, from what you've shown here it gets absolutely battered by the Action 4, no contest at all.
GoPro still has an edge on the color science - its colors are more solid and pleasing, while DJI seems a bit bleak and bland sometimes. Other than that I'd switch from GoPro to DJI any minute with this 1 inch sensor and superior low light performance
I agree with you! Picture on Action 4 looks squashed to me also in some shots. But, so many other features such as real time video monitoring on the Action 4 is nice. GoPro really screwed up on that one.
The DJI looks like a clear winner here. But I gotta admit, in bright light settings, the GoPro video looks more vibrant and sharper due to increased contrast. Is there a colour setting on the DJI to simulate this appearance... like a vibrant color setting? Also, if the DJI (or GoPro) is on a tripod, for example, is there something to protect the lens? The case does not appear to protect the lens.
DJI is killing it. I’ve been limping along with my half-broken GoPro Hero 7 for years now. Amazing how much *hasn’t* changed! Mainly the over-heating a crashing problems…unreal it still has trouble with basic functions. I’ll be upgrading in the next year or so, DJI all the way.
Awesome review! Clear winner DJI 4, hence I'd buy it right away ... if it was not lacking of a Time Warp mode ... or did I miss something? Time Warp one of the greatest things on the GoPro I'd say ... would definitely miss that ... Any thoughts?
I'm about to buy an action cam that's why l ended up here looking while looking for the best reviews of the GoPro only to find out there's another camera apart from the GoPro. The DJI looks way super interesting.
After DJI sent me two Action 3 cameras that both failed to connect to the app, I'm now a bit gun shy. I just have my fingers crossed that they have fixed this very big problem with the Action 4. If it matters to anyone... I have a Samsung S21 Ultra and my phone has never had issues connecting to any of my other devices. The Action 3 was a total fail for me. DJI had 57 days to correct the issue. They moved my case all the way up to their highest level of customer communcation until finally they just told me to send everything back for a full refund.
Awesome vid. The GP 11 holds up pretty good to the DJI 4. The GP 12 will be a Game CChanger if it ups the sensor and gives us quality low light capabilities. Holding my cash until then!!
The GoPro just looks better... It just does. I'm hoping and praying that DJI will come out with something that blows GoPro out of the water... But the Action 4 doesn't do that.
Your side by side comparisons need to be X always on the right Y on the left...You keep on switching the DJI with the GO Pro comparisons and makes it hard to judge when you keep flopping positions!!!
The question that I need an answer to is why did Osmo release a month before GoPro? Is it because they know GoPro is better? It's not that I don't like Osmo, but I will wait for a new release for comparison.
Hi Aldryn. Thanks for this very thorough comparison. I find one thing very difficult to judge so I need you help. To your eyes, from what you were filming, which one gives out the most accurate colors ? For example, starting @14:25, the color of your hoodie seems gray on the GoPro and more blue on the Action 4.
The seconds do add up indeed, I agree 100%. The speed of the buttons really matter. When you use the camera all the time, the buttons have to react immediately. I use the DJI cameras for Motovlogging and I have been filming everyday 20-40 GB for the last 3 years. I have 2 x DJI OA 1 and 1 x DJI OA 3 and where I thought the OA 3 would be the answer to life and everything I actually went back to the OA 1 as my main camera and then I use the OA 3 as my B-roll camera. First issue with the OA 3 was that it took forever from when I pushed the button to when it started recording. Also when I wanted to stop recording, it takes forever and I had to look at the camera several times to ensure it actually turned off. Especially when you have it in the casing, as I have. On the motorcycle I need the extra protection of the camera. But the casing made it hard to turn on and off the camera. Something I never struggle with on the DJI OA1 Second issue: When I used and external microphone it would take even longer for the audio to start recording. So first 2 seconds of every video was bad audio. A huge issue for me, when I use it as my main camera. Third issue was that the OA3 will overheat way quicker that OA1. I record in Africa and in the Middle East, so I would happen constantly. But the OA1 will only overheat if it's standing still in the sun recording. I never had the OA1 overheat while riding. Fourth issue is low light situations: The OA3 makes horrible footage in low light, where the OA1 footage is pretty unbelievable good in low light. I ride after dark with just the head light from the motorcycle and the light from my motorcycle dashboard and gps and it looks pretty amazing with the OA1. I can't do that with the OA3. I do love the footage quality from the OA3 when the light is good. It's really really good. But the overheating frustrates me big time. I also love the magnetic mount. Very strong and I never feared loosing it from the motorcycle. I also agree with the Quick shift button. It's great. Another point for me in continuing to use the OA1 on my helmet is that it's smaller and lighter, and it makes a difference when I ride 7-8 hours a day. I would love to exchange the OA3 with a OA4 to see if it has actually fixed the issues that I experienced and then I would consider using the OA4 as my main camera. But as it is now the OA1 is my go to camera. It just never fails on me. I never used the GoPro, so I can only compare the OA versions with eachother. The remote control is a game changer! I need it! In general I find that the Mimo app is horrible. I can't be bothered using it as half the time, it wont connect to the camera. One thing I would really wish for is the ability to trim the videos straight on the camera. Excellent video!
Thanks! I've had the 11 black for a month, and it overheats shooting for more than 20m with no fancy features on, 4k 30 fps. I just pre ordered the DJI 4 today, and will be returning the Hero 11.
you should put either gp11 and os4 on the left / right of your video and sync till the end of your video, but you messed up viewers to watch properly because you put gp11 on the left but suddenly on the right.
Love the video. I have a GoPro 8, which was the first Action Cam that had everything I needed it to do to use it as a studio camera. The one thing I dislike is the Dongle, which MUST be the GoPro version... I have other equipment to connect the same items (Microphone - external power, etc.), but if it is not the GoPro Dongle, it won't recognize it. Thus, I am looking for product which I can use the same way, but Open Source the external attachments so that I can use what I have more affordably... Newest model may not always be the best, and if my GoPro Dongle takes a dive on me, will they still be making them? This is why I love the USB-C connection, and open source.
I liked the colors of the GoPro way better than the Action 3 but now with the new Action 4, I think it looks better than the GoPro for the first time, especially in water. But despite that, I think I'll go for the Insta360 Go 3 for its versatility, despite the smaller sensor. Still undecided though...
@@Beachbumsofficial I know, Go3 has some limitations. No interchangeables batteries, no SD-card, smaller sensor, lower resolution (2.7k) and framerates. But it is so practical that it feels like a camera I would use a lot more often than any other.
@@TechDaddyFr have fun with the X3. Could please let me know how the quality is in the water. Im debating whether to get the DJI Osmo Action 4 or the X3. I would love to get the X3 for surfing aswel, imagine the angles i could get with surfing haha. But im just scared it wont go that well with salt water
@@Beachbumsofficial I have an X3 and a GoPro, and in my opinion the X3 is practically useless underwater without a dive case on it. If you are going to use a camera primarily for underwater, I'd choose the DJI Osmo Action 4 over the Insta360 X3. I personally only use the GoPro underwater and keep the X3 on land.
You get "express" shipping and it's free too. I think the express is from DJI to the Ship. Then a few days later it pulls into a dock on the west coast. Then UPS runs it over a few times, and in my case, will set at the local distribution center for 2 days, then and only then, you will get your crushed box.
guys i need your help on buying one of these 2, i am using it for fishing purposes. i watched the whole video but still not decided, which one going to be better for me while fishing? ( i am also a scuba diver I'd like to use it underwater).
Both cameras would satisfy your needs. Both quality is great and both can go deep without a case, and even deeper with a dive case. It comes down to battery life and user experience after that.
This is super helpful! Thank you so much! I never watch full videos and I actually kept watching this for the entire video because every second was helpful. You also don’t talk too slow, so I don’t fall asleep. I was engaged and interested the entire time! I think you do a great job at getting in-depth, but without making it too technical so that someone without a lot of camera knowledge (like me) can still follow and understand what you mean! I rarely leave comments, but I felt like this deserved it because of how helpful this video is! The callout and showing the comparison of the distorted view was extremely helpful since that has been the main reason I have been holding back from getting a go pro. Now with the better low light, better adjusting for the distortion from the wide views, better battery, better user experience, being able to preview in the app while recording, being easier to connect an external mic, turning on quicker, the magnetic system, etc., my choice is clear! Thank you so much!! ❤

Just for the fact the the action cam streams while recording to your phone is why DJI wins with me. Most important for those who mount on our Jeeps off roading and want to turn on and off when we want.
