I also discovered these a year or so ago. You can sometimes get them on sale at Joann's. What I initially purchased for was to hold zippers. I had made several bulk purchases of zippers in various lengths. These containers have let me store by length and I also stack on top of cabinetry/shelving! Love your share... thanks so much for taking the time!!!
I store my jelly roll stripes in the same box. I purchased mine on Missouri Star Quilt Company (MSQC) I did not think of looking at Amazon.. silly me! I like the art box storage options, I will need to look at theses.. thanks for sharing 😊
I also have 4 of those boxes ordered online ( on sale of course) during the pandemic. I originally put 2.5 inch scrap strips in them while sorting 4 trash bags of scraps and remnants of prior projects. I now sort by juvenile/novelty, darks, lights, and one for strips that are not width of fabric. I keep my jelly rolls separate unopened. into bins. The best part is that those bins snap closed securely and are see through. I now know they fit into one of your Harbor Freight tool carts. A future purchase when ready. Great, practical, unsponsored storage equipment for any level quilter.
I think the “ArtBin” storage containers are great: durable, lightweight, etc. Whenever I find them on sale, I purchase what I know I’ll use. I don’t have the “jelly roll” size. They’re on my “Hope to find on Sale” list! I love neat, practical organization! AND I love your RU-vid videos! THANK YOU🫶✂️🪡🧵
I am fairly new to this hobby so I haven't had the need for this storage option yet. Good to know there are storage options out there. Thank you for sharing.
@@nursevanhelsing4413 Works in Progress. You know, those pieces you have sitting around waiting for you to do something! 🤪 I’m doing a couple of Sew Alongs (SALs) and I store my blocks in the separate artbins for each project.
I had seen this jelly roll box in an earlier video that you had made. It peaked my interest and the next time I was in joanns, I bought one. Michelle, what a difference. All my 2 1/2" binding strips/scraps were shoved into 2 plastic shoeboxes. Over flowing. You sure know how to inspire people! I got a good movie going and I pressed all those strips flat and they went into that jelly roll box - neat as a pin! I love that! Now when I want to get a piece of binding. I'll be able to just go get it! What a giant difference. Thank you again, I had no idea I needed that jelly roll storage box so much!!
I haven’t purchased a jelly roll yet. I’m only working on my third quilt but will keep this storage idea in mind. I’m glad you shared this tip. Great solution for storing sashing strips too.
Great idea for those who need it. I have only have one jelly roll and it was a gift from my husband. He saw it in our local shop with 40% off and remembered me saying how pretty it was but I’d never pay full price as they are very expensive here. I don’t think I will be using it any time soon as it is Lily Asbury’s Fancy line and it will have to be a very special project where I don’t cut it up too much as I love her designs. I was sad when she stopped designing fabric.
I rarely buy jelly rolls or most other precuts but I do sometimes have leftover 2 1/2" strips from yardage and I put those in a container from Wal-Mart to use in a scrap quilt or some other project. I do use a similar container to the square one for projects and really like those. The 2 1/2" strip container looks like it would be really handy for those that regularly buy jelly rolls or have a lot of scrappy 2 1/2" strips.
I have not seen these storage boxes before. I do have other art bin containers and love them. I have art bin satchel cubes. I love them for storing art bin satchels. It has predrilled holes and rails so the bins slide in like a drawer.
Thanks for sharing another great idea Michelle. I also would like a different table top ironing surface. I have a wool mat, but the heat goes through to my large cutting surface, and that is no bueno! Maybe you and Wes can build one together?
I love jelly rolls and I also cut my fabric scraps to 2.5” strips as well. A friend made me a huge box wrapped in fabric as a gift and thats where I store them.
I have 6 of the 14X14” art bins that I use for current WIP. Jelly rolls I manage, if unwrapped, in a see thru container, sets held together with loose rubber bands. These are stacked on top of one another, which makes searching thru easy. I could not justify the cost for individual strip containers, Altho I think they are a great way to store them!
I love the half sized Artbin Super Satchels. They stack well and are easy get down from closet shelves of from under furniture. I keep my 1/4 to just under a yard fabric in them.
I just bought two of those boxes for jelly roll strips. I love making black, white and red log cabin blocks and have a supply of them to store and these are working great for them. I buy a lot of pre-cuts because of arthritic hands and I am always looking for ways to store them. Thanks
Nice tip. I do try to use up the whole jelly roll in a project but for leftover ones I keep them in a storage container similar to yours but smaller so it fits on my shelves. Try to keep the white ones separate since I use more of those for binding, etc. I have lots of storage containers for other leftover cuts of 5", 2 1/2" etc purchased at Dollar General or wherever they are on sale.
I like the long boxes. I use old suitcases that roll across the floor. Made a move from Ky to Va and the movers just picked them up and loaded them into the van and then carried them into the house.
I have not seen these near me as I live quite rural. I use a clear shoe box for WOF jelly roll pieces and a sweater box for pieces shorter then WOF and separate by color. My new jelly rolls that are not opened yet are in a zippered tote bag originally for CD 's. They are also for my 5 in. squares. Got perfectly.
I have one of those but I use mine for my foundation paper piecing tools. I have three add a quarter rules from 6” up the 18” and I use the heavy template plastic along with them. Lots of paper clips my 60mm rotary, tape, and flat head straight pins. Great for storing those tools and I don’t have to worry about the rulers getting broke when traveling.
I have wondered where you go those. I don’t usually purchase jelly roll strips unless it is for a particular quilt I am doing. But I could always start putting extra strips in there. I love art bin bins. They are so good!
I love love love my ArtBin strip boxes! ❤️ I only have two, but a boatload of jelly rolls that I will get into soon, so I see a few more strip boxes in my future.
Believe it or not, I have never purchased a jelly roll. I do not have the jelly roll box, but someday I may need one. I store 2 1/2 in pieces of fabric in a bin marked 2 1/2 I also have bins for 3 1/2, 4 1/2, 5 1/2, 7 and 10 inch fabrics.
Michelle, do you have another video that shows your new tool box storage unit? It would be wonderful to see how you organize your tubs and supplies in it.😊Thank you.
Cindy, Here is a video I did when Wes got his tool box. He let me use it to show others how it could be used for quilt room storage. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0v1Jk3Vuaqw.html
I have and use the art bins for my projects and love them. I haven’t seen the 21/2” boxes but I’ll order some on your link. Thank you for all you storage tips!
I do have a couple. I bought the first one to store my tube turners. I didn't get a box because they were on clearance. The box works well. Sew, I guess you could use them for other sewing tools, too.
I love the larger art bins, I store my WIPS in them. I probably 6-7 WIPs in progress right now!! 😂 I haven’t seen the jelly roll size yet, I’m going to have to get a couple of them for future use, I’m currently doing a QAL with Corey Yoder using one of her jelly rolls (I have those strips in a basket) so I’ll have to get one for that!
I have 7 of these. 4 dedicated to 2 1/2" sorted by color, and one each for 1 1/2", 2", and 3" strips. They stay stacked on a shelf with a label indicating the size inside.
I want to know about the tool table you referred to. And yes, I love the art bins for jelly rolls. I have had a hard time finding them, but didn't look on Amazon.
Kim, I think I was talking about my new tool box storage units in my quilt room. Here is a video showing those: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kh4kNX41TCo.html Enjoy!
i do use those and i love it i only have one but plan on getting more . i also have square ones like you have some 21/2 inch squares 31/2 squares 41/2 inch squares and 5inch charm squares then i have one for layer cakes . 😊
You showed us these some time ago in a show and tell of your storage of material. I liked them then and do still. Now that I have my new sewing room in place I am going to purchase a couple. I really don’t like folding my WOF or jelly rolls which is what I have been doing. Sooo looks like I will be rearranging my drawers once again.. good thing I just put little stickers on the drawers. Have a great weekend. Tell Wes Hi for us. He could pop in and say hi some time.
This is a great idea for storing scrap strips away from measured 2 1/2” strips! I need better scrap management, and I think this may just do the trick. Off to download my Joann’s coupons…
Love all your storage ideas and your newly renovated quilt room. I have a couple of the 2 1/2 storage boxes and they are great. I would love to know how you made the iron board top for your new storage box from Harbor Freight.
Hi, I have had the long box for many years. It is great. Luckily, my closets will open & close with the longer length overhanging the self. That way they don't take up much space.
I have several of these. I separate by fabric- batik or regular fabric. Warm colors and Cool colors. I also store my flying geese, 2.5 squares, etc. I just stack them up and then I am happy.
I don’t have any bins for storing jelly rolls because I only have one jelly roll. I don’t like to sew with the pinked edges like that. Same goes for charm packs. They make such a mess and it’s difficult to do an accurate measure. Sorry for the negative comments but I felt like I had to tell someone about my dilemma. I enjoy your videos though. Thanks Michelle!
I don't have a storage box for jelly rolls. For leftover jelly roll strips or strips i cut myself, I re-roll, and use a hair tie to hold them together. I also use a small piece of paper to say how many strips are there, and tuck it under the hair tie. I store them in the bin I have other precuts in.
Good idea, but I'd need a dozen or more. I do use the square box for projects. I place the pattern + fabric + anything I might have purchased for the project inside. Keeps from having those 'what did I do with that.... ' moments.
Consider the space you’ll need for these Longggg plastic bins…plus, messing everything up while digging for the ones you want, and then, straightening them out again. Really, better to throw in med, shallow square bins, by color, or fabric line, etc., and have fun rummaging through, and no need to straighten out, it’s easier, faster, and a lot more enjoyable to poke through :)
I bought one of these years ago and have two jelly rolls in it. But I just can’t bring myself to unroll all of the others so they just sit on a shelf looking cute and waiting their turn.
@thesimplequilter7499 they are 12in by 5 to six in and have lids especially the ones that are flat instead of standing up, only have to fold once and fits 2 rows of strips
I don't think we can get those long containers here, although I do have quite a few of the 12" square ones. So far, I keep my loose jelly roll strips in an old Tupperware celery keeper, just the right width, but it is filling up. I will definitely keep an eye out for those though, they look perfect.
