Dim Sum means "point of the heart"/" touch the heart" in Cantonese. It's a meal consisting of small steamed or fried savoury/sweet dumplings containing various fillings. The dishes are believed to have originated from Southern China, Guangdong province before making their way to Hong Kong and the world. Bamboo steamers are used and the food are best accompanied with Chinese tea. Bao and even chicken feet are available. Amazing food video...good review from you both about those Hong Kong food which you have tried. Bravo and thanks a bunch for sharing.
Dim sum is the equivalent of tapas or brunch or afternoon tea in Hong Kong. It's not a particular dish, it refers to a set of small dishes. Like the way afternoon tea is comprised of a variety of scones, sponges, cakes and sandwiches, etc., dim sum is also comprised of small dishes like spring rolls, cha siu baos, dumplings, beef balls, etc. But unlike afternoon tea being in the afternoon, dim sum is usually in the late morning in the brunch time
Literally the Australian diary Co. is famous for their milky beverages especially the signature “Double-layer milk custard” which simply beats everywhere in the entire city, though, people get impressed by it’s notorious attitude towards customers as well 😁
Do you even know how those milk are being milked ? Cows are usually r4ped but human insemination with male cow semen to the female in order to produce milk Once the milk is out and the baby born, the female cow serve no purpose anymore and being killed directly You are talking and putting these evil stuff on a pedestal while cows are killed Shame on you digga
Seems like you are at Hong Kong at the perfect time especially enjoying street food outside. More enjoyable in cooler dry weather than summer tropical weather!
Dim sum is kind of a Cantonese cultural equivalent of “tapas.” Small dishes of mostly finger food, and mostly steamed (hence the bamboo steamers that they are served in).
The emphasis of of Hong Kong / Cantonese cuisine is freshness and texture. Some dishes have no flavor, just the texture. To people who are used to spicy Chinese food, they feel that it's too bland. However, I love it because I could taste the true flavor and freshness. If you want spiciness, just add hot sauce. There are always a variety of sauces available.
You have not been to Hong Kong unless you eat these must eat food , like Dim sum in the morning Roasted pigeon Roasted duck 腸粉 in peanut sauce Yin yang, a drink from both coffee and milk tea 大排檔 Hot pot Morning congee with fried dough
Dim Sum is referred to as touch the heart. To test whether the Dim Sum is good, the three main dishes must be ordered are Har Gao, Char Siew Bao and Siew Mai. There are also other dim Sum dishes like Beef Triples, Chicken feet and more. Been to Hong Kong before with my family. Also, in Hong Kong should go and try the roast goose, which is also a Michelin star restaurant. Enjoy your trio in Hong Kong
very entertaining seeing tourists eating these comfort Hongkongers foods. Just enjoying your reaction when eating them. With the goose, there supposed to be s a sweet sauce that comes with it or may be you need to ask the waiter. The Australian Dairy Co, has nothing to do with Australia, and we locals have no idea why tourists line up for it, especially the mainlanders, it seems a must visit thingy, you will not see locals in that one. But others you have visited are just everyday Hongkongers would visit. There is a really good goose restaurant in Sham Tseng, you would need to take a bus there, they have their branches in the city area but i always take my tourist friends to those in their original location.
Dim sum (点心 Dian Xin) means "a little bit of love/heart" literally, and in mordern Chinese it means "snacks". If you have dim sum with tea or other beavages it will be “Cha Dian 茶点", meaning "tea and snacks".
Fun food adventure! The michelin noodle joint received its rating solely for their wonton and affordability, but dude, you went for the beef!? Also, typically, you would add red vinegar to the shrimpy broth to enhance the flavor.
Dim sum direct translation means selection of your heart. So they prepare all sweet & savory Cantonese dishes (usually bite size) serving in small basket. You can select those that you like. Goes well with tea.
"Dim"/Touch "Sum"/Heart. Something to touch your heart. It's equivalent to Spanish tapas - just small dishes to share. The term doesn't refer to a particular dish, but rather a type of meal. The Bao/Bun is made solely with wheat flour, there's no rice flour.
Some locals love the Australian dairy co. too. I’m a die hard fan 😂 don’t think you can get all your ordered food within seconds in any other restaurants. The best item is not the macaroni, it’s the scrambled eggs (so smooth and strong butter flavour ) and also their steamed egg / milk desserts. Some found their staff rude, but they’re very efficient (just hope the customers will order quickly 😆). They’re known for very gentle and nice to pregnant women and elderly people.
I've been in Toronto for most of my life, but I was born in Hong Kong. You can find most of the things you ate in Hong Kong back in Toronto. However, prices in Toronto are much higher, as well as our taxes and tips.
Oh one more thing: if it wasn't because of Steve's honest review, I would probably put australia dairy co on my MUST MUST go in HK next Dec with my son. I know just from the look of that plain macaroni with sliced ham topping, man...what's so special about it, also toast with scrambled eggs? We make that at home almost every day. That's why I am soo confused why ppl are willing to line up here. So when Steve said: "the soup is remarkably forgettable, it's a very plain soup, what I love is the experience here"...OK that's it for me. Thank you guys! Love your channel even more now! Cheers from Bali!🌺
Hope he will do another video because there are other food hasn't introduce here such as Rice Noodles Rolls, Pineapple Butter Buns, Egg Tarts, Mantis Shrimp, Snake Soup, Silk Stocking Milk Tea, and he just mention Clay Pot Rice.
If you knew Cantonese, interaction with the staff of small restaurants could be fun. I'm convinced that they are rude and sarcastic to have fun in their job. You can always joke with them to make them smile.
About the roast goose. It's a popular and iconic HK dish. So, a lot of restaurants have it and not all of them are good. You would have to do some research to find the better ones. I actually like the braised goose, which is less greasy, more. It is served in Chiu Chow (or Chaozhu) restaurants. My favorite bird to eat is the pigeon (baby pigeon). The meat is so chewy 😋
Michelin food ratings started as part of Michelin road guides - where to stay, where to eat, what to see. Michelin is a tire company, so they want people to do more road trips.
Always enjoy watching your videos !! Steve is right on... Dim Sum is a general name of those foods that come in small dishes - a big variety of "snacks' that make up a "meal".
Being in the Michelin Guide as a recommendation does not give the restaurant a star rating. Have a star is hard to earn. It's just an honorary mention.
☝🏻☝🏻 This! Came to say the same but glad someone else clocked it. If a recommendation was equal to being starred, then HK would be the most starred city in the world 😅
LOL...🤣, you are dam right.....the waiter always yelling at us even though we are traditional HK people...if you think the food is not good, just ask them to change, do not be afraid of them
The Australian Dairy Co. is a must go breakfast place when I visit HK. I think it's not easy for one time tourist to tell the difference of the food, simply like the soup base, the texture & flavor of the HK style milk tea or scramble egg sandwich etc, because this is not their regulars, and don't even know what to compare... Similar to burgers, Asians are not able to tell the difference... There's a reason for the line up, and I don't believe they can survive for years just because of tourist visit 😊
dim sum means small, delicate food. Where the food serve in small portion, u can finish it in 1-2 bites. Just like the western fine dining. I believe dim sum originated from the china palace, where the royal chef cook dim sum for the emperor or the king or the royal family. As we all know, Royal, must eat with delicacy, details, and with small bites. Then towards modern time today, Dim sum is widely introduce to families while having breakfast with chinese tea. Eat in small bite, a sip of Chinese tea. Just like English breakfast today, or hi tea, a piece of cake, or a slice of toast and English tea.
ya..HK is quite expensive compared to Indonesia in terms of breakfast. You guys spent 11 USD for 2 at Australia Dairy co, with the same amount you'll get much more healthier, tasty complete western breakfast at any cafe in Seminyak or Jimbaran, Bali, with nice paddy rice view or even beach, without staffs yelling/share table with strangers and long queue. But hey, I guess this is one of the must-visit in HK. Thanks for sharing your experience! Oh ya untuk Ivana: tolong bilangin Steve dong jangan diliatin dia gigit kertas bapau di terus dilepehin ke kotak plastik tempat dia makan dim sum, aduhh gimana gitu liatnya, hehe maaf ya hanya saran dari yang lihat.
The item you should have got at Australian diary Co is the scrambled eggs instead of sunny-side up/over easy (can't quite tell which one you got). It's creamy, smooth, and fluffy (it's different from the overcooked version in North America). Most cafes of that type there do a great job making it that way, so not just Australian diary Co. I'd suggest you to try at least once while there. I am curious what you think of HK milk tea. It's their "city drink".
you mentioned last time you wanted to visit the mainland but couldn't get to see the ice village in Harbin. Actually Jilin province does have a 72 hour visa policy so you could do that if you wanted. Just a suggestion and maybe Korea after that since it's so close?
During our travels in China w3 developed a star system for the toilets, one star was do not use, cork it in😅😅 five star was a sit down with toilet paper provided, soap, hot water and towels.
I remember one time I eat the bake pork chop rice in Toronto china town. I waited almost an hour for it.. and when I ask, they said they overcook it and have to bake it again...that is like 30 years ago.
Dim sum can be translated as snack. Actually they were gorgeous and fancy snacks which firstly developed in Canton area (south east coastal area in China) hundreds years ago. Only rich people could afford that. In the beginning, it was the little meal of fancy snacks between lunch and dinner among rich families. Later on it became into breakfast but still only rich people could afford it in the past for long.
Dim sum is a traditional Chinese meal made up of small plates of dumplings and other snack dishes and is usually accompanied by tea. Dim sum dishes include an assortment of seafood, meat, and vegetable dishes that are prepared in various ways: steamed, fried, or baked.Typically dim sum is consumed during brunch hours - late morning to lunchtime.
@@pookichan9794In hakka we say Tiam Sim, in Mandarin it's Tian Xin, in Cantonese it's Dim Sum. They all mean the same. It's simply means "Touch the heart" it doesn't necessary mean it's a 'Dish' ".
Hong Kong has long been an international city and people like new ideas of cooking and new type of food. You can have nice Japanese food, Vietnamese food, North and South, East and West China food etc. Try all types of food, cheap and expensive one. The best egg waffle are those cooked with charcoal stove. It is more crispy.
Dim sum can be said as Chinese tapas 😁 anything petite, snack. Typical dim sum 'ha kau' shrimp dumpling 'siu mai' with pork and shrimp, and more. Each restaurant has its own secret recipe and types of food, in order to be outstanding and competitive from hundreds of high standard restaurants in HK. Enjoy HK!
The long queue is now mainly from China mainlander. The little red book brings those 15 millions to HK. The little restaurant is solely for HKgers with lots of memories and stories. That’s make HKgers appreciate that restaurant.
Your tastes buds must be confused, but I love it! You went to the michelin place -"nah, mediocre". Two weeks earlier, in a local diner that also doubles up as a lingerie shop; cook probably has holes in socks -"omg, 6 stars!"
Also the Australian diary company is very good. You have to order the French toast next time. That’s what cha Chang teng is known for. And Australian diary company makes the best toasts. That’s why you see locals queueing up in front as well
Wontons are supposed to be small. Originally, It is intended for rich people who like some snacks when they are not very hungry. It should be one small mouthful per wonton. I also like the smaller one, not so fulfilling so that you really can taste it.
Dim Sum literally means, "Touch Heart". It is a type of food where they steam it in bamboo baskets. They come in many varieties but Har Gau (prawn dumplings), Siew Mai (Pork/shrimp) is among the most popular. What you had was Har Gau, Si-choy Ngau Yuk (beef ball, chives, cilantro and water chestnut) and Char Siu Bao (Pork bun).
