Super cool. I've been playing several instruments all of my life. I can do slow melodic solos but I always hired a "stunt guitarist" to do any shredding. Only recently have I become interested in it (at 56 years of age) and this video is awesome. Thanks for posting...

After learning how to play "jump start" by greg howe, i found that string skipping is very important technique not only for that song but in all shredding guitar song. I found that my left fingers can do faster than needed, but my picking when string skipping is what prevent me from playing fast.

One thing I still don't know... Play an ascending sweep with a downstroke but then skip a string. Would you use a downstroke on this skipped string (like a "bunny hop") or use an upstroke?

How come you went back and forth between string skipping on pentatonic scales. Then with diminished you only skipped one string and didn’t go back to the string in between the skip. Pentatonic was 6th string to 4th string back to fifth string. Can anyone explain?
@daddymagnum3340
@daddymagnum3340 5 лет назад
Because he’s Josh and he does what he wants and he goes where he wants. Seriously though, I think for diminished it creates and builds up tension when you ascend like that and not return which it pretty awesome in sound. You don’t have to do it though, do what you want and mess around with it

I have had some rsi type problems where I tore a tendon in my elbow. This was almost 8 months ago and has not really been a bother for a while now, but I also have cubital tunnel in my fretting hand. What would you recommend me to do into gewtting into these stretchy shapes because I generally play in a very relaxed position and do not do major stretching exercises or playing as much as I used to due to the fact I do not want to retear the tendom. But I love those shapes and the sound so I really want to be able to play them

You have to play guitar at a strap length that is COMFORTABLE for you.....not cool but COMFORTABLE.Example if your arms & fingers are long you might go with a lower slung guitar,shorter arms higher strung guitar.Work things out slow & do physical excersise

Matt Hughes Reposition your wrist Stretch your fingers individually Practice Slowly You can see, too, in the video that Josh comes away from his position on the D (First finger, seventh fret, G string) as he is fretting the next note F three frets higher with his second finger. Josh has big hands, but I'm sure a three fret stretch like that is at least a little taxing on even him. Allowing yourself to lose that anchor on the first finger may be what you're needing You could always switch out your neck for a smaller scale length, or buy a different guitar as an absolute last resort
@mattHthenazgul

Thank you Jake, I will try that!
@camerons.7751
@camerons.7751 4 года назад
My hands are on the smaller side and when I first started playing guitar there was no way I could make that stretch. Over time my hands adapted and yours will eventually do the same. When I make a fist with both hands and then hold out my thumb and pinky fingers, my left hand's fingers can stretch A LOT further than my right. It just takes time for your fingers to "learn" how.

So I am not seeing why the diminished shape is in fact, "diminished". It sure sounds like it, but can anyone explain why? The intervals I am observing are a min 2nd and Maj3. What am I missing?
@Weloz92
@Weloz92 6 лет назад
boneous1 I don't know if you already figured it out, but I can help you: these shapes are not based on the diminished arpeggios/chords but on the diminished scale. It's an eight sounds scale based on an intervals sequence of 1 semitone followed by 1 tone (ex: C - Db - Eb - E - F# - G - A - Bb) or vice versa (ex: C - D - Eb - F - Gb - Ab - A - B): you see minor 2nd and major 3rd intervals due to the symmetric nature of the scale, which allows to extract from it many different harmonic structures that can be repeated on different degrees of the scale. For example, C - Db - E and Eb - E - G have the same intervals between their notes, Db - Eb - F# and E - F# - A do as well, etc. It may seems complicated, but if you play these scales on a guitar you'll see repeating shapes that make them very easy to visualize on the fretboard.
@yonikup2865
@yonikup2865 5 лет назад
Diminished are a minor3rd i tervals. The scale.has 4 notes. And that shape he does usee 4 of them and 2 octaves. Then he goes up 3 frets(up a minor 3rd degree) and repeats

@alexsharp3481
@alexsharp3481 8 лет назад
One thing you could try if you don't already. Hold the guitar in the classical position. Like how you would have to hold a V shaped guitar. I find it much more comfortable that way and easier to stretch. Other than that, no. There's no easy way or cheat to get there. You just have to make it happen
@millenwagon
@millenwagon 8 лет назад
+Soul of Cinder cheers for the help, i sometimes put my guitar that way for sweeping and you're right it does help. I'll try it for this too, probably genetically my fingers just wont span that far. I broke my pinky last year and it never healed properly so that doesn't help. Whats the shortest scale guitar? Ive got a gibson les paul which is pretty short, anything out there even shorter?
@alexsharp3481
@alexsharp3481 8 лет назад
I believe the new Wylde Audio guitars are the shortest scale length I've seen at 24.6 inches. I too have the same problem, short fingers. I'm Also playing a 7 string so it's even more difficult lol. Another thing that could help I just thought of. You mentioned a Les Paul. The majority of LPs Jane thick chunky necks. A thinner profile such as a Jackson, Ibanez, or Schecter could help you out. Happy shredding!
