Boy o boy am I taking you on a journey today! We are going to break down the E chord. This is one of the most important chords to know for a lot of reasons. On the guitar the E chord is one of the easiest chords to play and it sits in a very accessible place singing wise for most male voices. So, easy chord, easy to sing and as a result LOTS of songs written on the guitar have the E chord. In addition we see this chord in key of B, good news is that isn't that common, but also we see it in the key of A, which again for similar reasons, is VERY common on the ukulele. So, if you are a beginner and you have all these lovely songs that you want to learn and play but the biggest road block is the E chord, it is not an easy chord to play, well this lesson is aimed directly at you. I am going to show you some work arounds, so you can play the E chord, without actually having to play the two awful E shapes that you may have tried to learn. In full honesty I really would prefer that you took the time to learn the E chord because in your progression through music you are going to need it, but, in the mean time, here is a tip so you can play some of your favorite songs before learning the chord.
There are three times that you will diatonically use this chord, meaning there are three times that the E chord pops up naturally. The key of E as the I chord, the key of B as the IV chord and the key of A as the V chord. A is the easiest work around because all you need to do is play the E7, but that only works for the V chord, meaning we need to find a way to make the E chord easier in songs in the key of E and B, the answer? Tuning down a half step, because when you do that the F shape is actually an E chord, making life so much easier. Why don't we just jump into the tutorial and break it down.

I have recently discussed this w Gabe and Krischan...I thought Im super smart. Apperantly I am not😅😅😅 However a good, popular example of this would be "Your Man". Tune half step down and that C, G, D shape becomes exactly what you need to play: "Baby lock the door and turn the lights down looowww" ... Only problem I had is with the solo, but even then, tuning down makes it happen on the marked frets so it is super useful... And then comes my man Mr S Lightnin Hopkins who made a habbit out of tuning down and up half, 1.5 steps depending on the potato shortage in Dubai... Everything sounds better half step down, guess its cuz the way Ukes tuned, is actually a 6th, so tuning down is a 5th or flat6th and thats bluesy. And I like bluesy. Sorry to ruin comments section, thank You master Tyler as always, you are spot on and very very helpful!❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥

Thanks Tyler for the awesome lesson. that was interesting. You know I am learning the E chord each day but.... do I like it? No. I can finger it and strum and do downstrums good with my thumb but when it comes to to strumming the D DU UDU strum, that becomes tricky. I have gotten used to playing the Bb chord now altho it can also be tricky but it is at least better than the E chord.

The message is brilliantly delivered…. But … 1) E can crop up in more than just those keys. 2) E7 is an standard substitution when it’s the dominant but E7 also works in other circumstances… So a funk or blues jam in the key of E (with the A an the I chord) can take an E7 substitution. Or as a IV7 in the key of B. As for re-tuning - Unless you’re playing with non transposing instruments why not simply transpose? You’re having to change the shapes accordingly anyway. 🤔🤔🤔

I wanted to keep it to just basic major keys, in the PDF file I address some of the other times it pops up and how to handle it. As far as why note transpose, it is more so beginners and strum along with the original tune. I have lessons teaching no diatonic chords, I have lessons on how to transpose, I have taught everything you have mentioned but I still get people that wont to play along with songs they love, mostly in E, and can't the play the E chord. Like I said, this isn't meant to be a permanent solution, learn the E, but if you love some songs in E and you are beginner here is a way to enjoy them.
