I've needed a decent welding table/workbench for some time. I've always managed the best I could with what I had but this is going to make work much easier and more accurate too. I've not seen anyone fill the gaps in on a welding table before but it made sense to me as I'll probably be using this as a general workbench 75% of the time.

It's the attention to detail that makes these builds and videos so amazing! Going back and putting extra tape on each bar rather than fudging it. Keeping the sides square, grinding the weld/installing screws replacing with rubber stops so the spacers sit exactly right. Not to mention thinking about the fact the rubber should go on the bar not the table. Then removing the mill scale, waxing it etc ... Amazing!

brilliant mate! from inception to design, to execution, absolutely brilliant! its more than heartening to see a craftsman find and implement a solution to a problem, small or large, instead of "making do". so many just let it go half-arsed and live with it, using the initial flaws as excuses for substandard results.

First off, great video. As a helpful idea. When your tacking any square together try just tacking the inner edges together first. This method in conjunction with your gaps between your pieces will allow you to measure, squeeze, and pull the cross ends together and apart to make everything nice and square. Then when you tack the outer edges it will lock everything into place. That's how we trued up the ladder skids I built for a pump company. You can pull your measurement cross ways then use a ratchet strap for big stuff or push it on end against a wall until both measurements are the same then tack the outside and check for twist like you did. Hope that helps.
@serdiefgotreb
@serdiefgotreb 7 месяцев назад
It's actually the complete opposite. You always must try to tack the outer sides, it's easier to push inwards that to pull outwards

I have to admit, I watched all the way through and wondered why you were doing the slats, when it would be easier to just weld a big bit of plate on the top, then you showed the clamp part and I literally said out loud "i'm an idiot" - excellent work as ever :D
@JDeWittDIY
@JDeWittDIY 3 года назад
Another method people use is a solid top with holes drilled and special clamps for the holes. But with the slat method, there's no holes until you remove the slats.

Who says they have to be old, I have about 12 of them around the yard. I use them for scaffold, stools, temporary ladder, welding props, formwork support and chairs. I use milk crates for just about any temporary furniture or stand inside the house, garage, and around the yard. They are modular and give you a new level of 320mm above the floor, so handy.

I have the Fireball Tools squares and can say I find the "3 point" method much more simplified and easier. 3x of 2" angle iron with a square tube clamped across the top works great. The custom squares come in handy here and there but have found that they stay in my tool drawer a lot. They are indeed good for welding upright legs in corners though, but with a little work you can make your own squares out of tube as well. I also want to give a word of caution. If you are going to be welding anything for more than 20-30 minutes, never wear shorts or short sleeves. In fact I never recommend shorts at all, ever. It's far too easy to get UV burn and weld spatter in your shoes or boots. Long pants..always. Lastly, I see no reason to have the filler bars at all. And to remove mill scale, the best answer is pre-soak in muriatic acid for 30 min to 1 hour, then immediately after that, dip for another 30 min in phosphoric acid, otherwise the steel flash rusts. Phosphoric gives a rust prevention coat. Vinegar really does nothing except oxidizes and rusts. It's often used in a mix to patina metal for a rust look.

Dear Neil, you’ve done it again. You’ve taken a much hackneyed solution and added some truly unique embellishments to make a beautiful welding table. Your project couldn’t have come along at a better time. I’ve just taken possession of my new welder and cut-off saw. My next need was a functional welding table. I intend, with your permission to use some of your design elements in my table. In the past I did purchase a couple of sets of the plasma-cut template squares and put them together. They were incredibly useful in fabrication. You can’t too much of a Balls of Fire! Cheers.
