Jon, this was by far one of my favorite video of yours, sir. When you have to work your way into a nice catch like that you will remember it all your life. I am retired now but when I was about 18 out backpacking in the Little River Canyon area of north Alabama I had brought some ultra-lite tackle with me. I also had about 150 ft of paracord with me to repel down the canyon wall to get to the beautiful teal clear clean river. Took about 30 minutes to safely get to bottom of the canyon from the top. Had no idea what kind if any fish at all in this river as it was my first in the area. Using 4 lb line with a small yellow with black stripes beetle spin I started casting into the deep part of the river behind huge boulders where the water was a little slower. On my first cast, I caught about a 1 lb redeye bass. They don't get very large and I believe at that time the record was around 6 lbs. I caught 3 or 4 more red eyes about the same size. Then I walked about 30 feet upriver having to jump from one huge boulder to the next. I could see dozens of fish along the boulders as the water was so clear. I stopped on top of one boulder about the size of a VW bug and retied my lure on the line. I cast over the next boulder and brought the beetle spin down another big boulder in the water bumping against its side. I could see my lure 6 or 8 feet in the water it was so clear and the flash of the gold metal spinner as I swam it thru the cold water. Then I saw a huge flash dart out from under some overhanging rocks about 10 feet away. It torpedoed straight at my beetle spin. I was so excited I came close to jerking on the rod before fish had even grabbed my lure. But I was able to refrain and kept slowly retrieving the spinner just fast enough to turn the blade. That huge red eye bass hit that lure coming up toward the service and jumped about 3 feet out of the water and shook its big head about 10 times trying to throw the hook but couldn't. He hit the surface of the water on his side and water went everywhere and he actually did a short tail walk on top of the water. Then he dove down hard bending my ultralight rod so fare I thought it was going to snap right in to. My drag was set perfect and he started peeling drag going down river as I jumped from boulder to boulder trying to at least keep close enough to him so he wouldn't empty all my line...he got to a rock ledge that went all the way across the 50 ft or so wide river and turned back upstream and here we went again. It seemed like I had been fighting him for at least 20 minutes but actually had only been about 3 minutes when he leaped out of the water again and hit the side of one of the big boulders about 2 feet up the rock. The impact must have stunned him just a little as I was able to gain some line and jumped down on a ledge about a foot off the river surface. I was shaking like a naked kid who had just jumped in and out of an ice-covered river from the excitement. I somehow managed to pull him over close enough to lip him with my left hand as I held the line tight against my drag. Just as I picked him up out of the cold river he shook so violently that my wrist was sore for about 4 days from the violent shake. Of course, I didn't have any scales in my backpack but was smart enough to take a few pictures of him next to my backpack referencing his length on the side of the backpack. This magnificent red eye bass was nice and fat and after releasing him back alive into the river I looked carefully at the marks on my backpack indicating his length. I figured about 20 inches. But when I got home and measured with a tape measure it was 26 3/4 inches long. A wildlife officer at DNR after considering the measurements and looking at the pictures estimated the fish to have been well over 5 lbs. Even though it was not a new world record size which didn't matter as I released instead of killing and packing it out for official weighing and certification it was still a fish of a lifetime for me. I can still remember every detail of that fish from setting the hook to releasing. It took me over an hour to climb back up the steep canyon wall to continue my backpacking trip. What a fishing trip and I believe I will remember every detail till the day I die!

Great day. I fish the same way. Exploring new water on the bank. I have access to a boat, but it's not my thing. To find water, test the water, and then catch a fish is so rewarding. That is what keeps me going. The research and effort paying off. The vegetation is harder where I'm at, so just finding a casting spot is half the battle. Next winter, please visit someplace warmer instead of ice. I watch a lot more videos in the winter since I can't fish myself. Too cold.

Love fishing little creeks like that for smallmouth. My friend and I have caught them up to 19 inches before. Twister tails were always our favorite....basic but very practical and versatile.
