The 12-24mm ultra-wide-angle lens is one of the widest full-frame lenses on the market. Ultra-wide lenses can make highly impactful photos if you know how to use them. In this video, I will show you how and how to use both depth and distortion to your photos for more impact. Both Sony and Sigma have their own 12-24mm, Canon has an 11-24mm and Nikon has a 14-24mm.

Great video. Its a dramatic angle of view that makes me love the ultra wide, angle lenses. I started with a samyang 14mm on a A7, but next year i hope to get a 14-24 Sigma for it, i hope it will be enough first. I know its a heavy weight, but for astrophotography it will be perfect too.

I love my Canon 11-24mm. It's been great at Stokksnes photographing the mountains while capturing the reflection off that very shallow pool of water. A shot at 16mm is just not wide enough. In fact, reflection photography is a great use for ultra wide lenses.

Your photos are SPECTACULAR! I've been using my Nikkor 12-24mm, and it has become my FAVORITE LENS, my "Nifty 50" is a CLOSE 2nd Place. The 12-24 is such an AMAZING lens, and Utilizing it has caused me to rethink and recompose my shots, in a most beneficial way! I DEFINITELY focus moreso on grabbing the smallest elements within my shots, using more foreground emphasis, as well as concentrating on simplifying my shots! Thank you for such a detail-filled and insightful video! I'm your NEWEST SUBSCRIBER; looking forward to reviewing and learning to sharpen my skills from your back-content.⚡💪🏾

I like the "impactful" look. What drew me to photography outside my journalistic work was Ansel Adams' work, which is often very dramatic, although there's rarely anything moving in his photos. I know he typically used a large format camera and the technology was vastly different, but that's still what I think of first when I hear the word "landscape."

Incredible! I'm very excited because I just upgraded from a crop sensor Nikon with kit lenses as a hobbyist and bought a new Sony a7Riv with the GM 12-24mm for my new real estate photography business, however, I love landscape photography and love the protentional with my new gear. Besides the composition, I am just left in awe at the post work that you've done to get your final results. Great pictures like always. I personally prefer the 16-35mm for landscape photography. You have to take care of the foreground very much, because it tends to dominate the photo very often. And it‘s not comfortable to carry on hiking trips with all its expensive, additional, essential components like huge square 150mm ND filters etc.

While I'd love to add the Canon 11-24mm or the Sigma 12-24 to my gear, budget is an issue for me plus I'd like to have something wide for Astro Photography. With that in mind what do you think of the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8? On the wide end I currently have a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2 & a used Tamron 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 that I picked up for only 40 bucks.

Love the video, have a 10-20 Sigma, and yes, You can get very close to the foreground. Struggling a bit with placing a subject since it get very fast small when it's not a foreground subject. But I feel that showing leading lines seems easier with a wide-angle og super-wide angle then a telephoto lens, not sure if that's just me. Tanks for yet another great and educational video.

A great video Mads! I also thought already about buying the SEL1224G which you use, but I didn't because it seems not be possible to use filters on it. Unbelievable for me to be honest for a G-lens, but it is how it is :) As I see, you shot water scenes with it: Did you find a way to use filters with it without using a tape?

Thanks for this great video ! I'm thinkging about purchasing the Sony 12-24 - there's an F4 option and a much more expensive F2.8 version ? Do you think it's criticial to buy the F2.8 or should I settle with F4 just as well ?
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen Год назад
If you want to do astro landscape photography, the 2.8 version is the best, but if not and you don't want a lens that is too heavy the f/4 is the way to go.
@pianoman1973
@pianoman1973 Год назад
@@MadsPeterIversen Thanks for the quick response ! I want it for landscapes ( no astro ), don't care about the weight , but want a sharp and qualitative. I assume you started first with the f4 version and then possibly switched to the f2.8 ? If so, where did you notice changes ( no related to astro) ? Thanks again for your quick response :)
@echoauxgen
@echoauxgen 4 года назад
You show the perfect use of the SEL1224G but Do Not forget the E 10-18 (used before the 12-24) works in full frame mode from 12mm (mark the lens just where it starts 13mm) to 18mm (18 if you remove the light shield) and 15 to 27 in APS-C. uses screw on filters, AF AND IS and all so small... both are f/4 but not mentioned is the use for Astro Milky Way shooting from the A7S to A7M3 they gather the light and sensors have the dynamic range for shadows. I even use the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 for astro. I found processing the image in Lr two or three times sending to Topaz Denoise AI/AI Clear each time lets you brighten and bring out shadows more each time to where a night shot looks like daytime clear and sharp. Do not use Circular Polarizers view is to wide, use a Variable Neutral Density Filter for water and if you have a Mark 2 and below use the on Playmemories store camera filter app (wish it was on the Mark 3). Also the 12mm is great for a night pano to get that rainbow MW less frames at 75% coverage at 180 Degrees in portrait view. As far as stars and MW use PhotoPills to find and it's Spot Stars section for the SS for your camera model and lens mm and use Planit Pro to see how many levels and shots required for a 3:2 (or any). You get smaller galactic center and longer snake across the sky or in portrait view a verticale above the heavens (try an up and over) so much fun. The E 10-18 perfect for museums/churches where tripods not allowed or even incognito street shooting...

Thanks for the great video. I'm wondering which of these two are better... 12-24mm Sony F4 (w/o image stabilization) or 14-24mm Sigma Art F2.8 (with image stabilization). What would you go with? Prices are almost same. $15 more expensive for Sony.

Depends if you want to do night photography with it? In that case the f/2.8 is the one to get :)

@@MadsPeterIversen thanks for your clear answer. I think I already new the answer for my question but... you know 😂 I'm trying to follow the exact same way you do. Sony A7R3 + 12-24mm + 24-105mm. Thank you my teacher! Will keep watching your videos :D

Mads, how are you dealing with the lack of filters for the Sony 12-24? this is one of the reasons I went with the laowa 12mm which works with the 100mm filters system. Regarding the tutorials, have you considered getting a series out showing you Iceland/Faroe/Woodland processing methods?

I'm working on a big tutorial project right now :) And I use the K150 filter system from Kase.

In the cases where you are bringing the camera very close to the ground do you need to focus-stack to get everything sharp?

Yes, focus stacking it is :)
