I've been asked too often on how to shoot with ultra wide angle lenses. Today's video will give you some ideas and starting points, so I hope you can take them with you and explore with your own gear. For demonstration purposes, I am using the widest rectilinear lens on Micro Four Thirds, Laowa's 6mm f2 Zero-D (12mm full frame equivalent), and take you around a park near me. #photography #microfourthirds #omsystem

As a person who has used 35mm and 50mm almost exclusively for the last 16 years the 6mm (equivalent 12mm) has been like learning photography all over again and it’s been fun.

You are absolutely right. Living that long seeing through those ranges of focal length and then switching to 6mm ultrawide is like starting from scratch. Lol my current widest mft lens is the Sigma 16mm f1.4 and my normal telephoto is the M.Zuiko 40-150mm f4-5.6 R lens. I tend to you the f1.8 Oly primes from 17 to 25 to 45mm + the telephoto. 6mm would be learning to walk again as well as 300mm. 6mm would be so interesting.

@@corykphotography that 16mm has a special kind of rendering. I replaced with the 17mm 1.2. But I sometimes I wish I had kept it

@@WhoIsSerafin im pretty sure I know what you mean. The contrast it renders is so pleasing. I shot a wedding 2 weeks ago and used it for 95% of the reception photos. The clients liked those the best. I plan to get the other 2 contemporary lenses and this 6mm f2 Laowa. To me, it would be a perfect prime kit.

Very nice footage Jimmy and perfect timing for me. I learn a lot watching this episode so many thanks for sharing it! I just got 9mm f1.7 for my family upcoming vacation trip. My widest FL has ben 12-40mm F2.8 lens. BTW, the video of the geese and the building is very nice and the very image with the sun start is just stunning. I also notice you remove the camera and gimbal you were holding for the Vlog nicely done! Cheers...

That's great, I think I've learned a lot on why with UW lens drama is so near to boaring. Thank you so much for that! Could you comment on using Kingstone correction for controlling distortion on UW shots?
@geekinthegarden3927

And of course you were walking around filming yourself with the widest angle lens. I have the Laowa 7.5mm rectilinear f2 but I've also been playing with an adapted Canon mount Sigma 8-16mm on a 0.71 focal reducer which reads on the camera as 5mm-11mm. It's a case of relearning and rethinking everything to get decent shots.

I want to try this with the snakes and turtles I photograph. They've been my favorite subjects to do experimental wildlife photography.

Why not YELLOW35? Anyway, I recently got the Laowa 6mm and am loving it so far. I thought my Leica 8-18 (107° AoV @ 8mm/16mm EFL) would cover the wide end but this lens is at another level. Another 13-15° (depending on who you believe) makes a lot more difference than I would've thought. I'm almost tempted to get a fisheye such as the Laowa 4mm (210°), but I'm not keen on circular images or extreme cropping, plus such shots just look too contrived to me. One of the biggest caveats with UWAs is how much they include in the frame (even though much of it is reduced in size, it's still there) so you have to be aware of potential clutter even more. Another cool thing about this lens is the 10-point diffraction spikes when it's not wide open and the minimal flare (although you can get a bit of CA unless you stop down, so you may have to fix that). All-in-all, a great lens at a reasonable price point, but probably not for everyone. Thanks for adding the comment about respecting the wildlife--it's very important to not chase them or do anything to disturb them--they're not pets! That's what my Leica 100-400 is for (the Oly 150-400 f/4.5 is way too big/heavy/pricey).

Thanks for sharing your experience with wide angel lenses and really nice photos shared! I'm basically applying a lot of the hints and ideas already when using my fisheye creating nice pictures. As soon as I change to the 7-14mm all of the knowledge seems to be gone and photos trend to be boring. Any idea what the reason could be? Angle of view is at least quite similar at the short end...

What's it like editing videos like these with all the footage from the 360 camera?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
Not difficult, the only time consuming bit is upscaling to 4K using Topaz. I am still mastering 360 for vlogging and filming as you need the right height to achieve something good, but I love the fact that you can recompose and do other things after. I also ordered the new Go 3 for another dimension so I can clip it to my hat or my chest for more POV thing without the weight.

Hi Jimmy. Very interesting video clip for me. I rarely do wide angle shots as nearly all my photography and video is wildlife. I must make a day to go out with my 8 - 18mm and out of curiosity my Sirui 24mm Anamorphic lens - although not sure how to undo the compression for photos. Look after yourself. Peace ✌️😊
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
You need to de-squeeze by changing the aspect ration in Photoshop, pretty simply. If it's 1.33x, you just need to stretch the horizontal axis (X) by 1.33x or 133% and keep the Y as 100%
@systemanaturae105

Thanks for the great video with some excellent images. My widest lenses are: 14mm on micro 4/3 cameras 12mm on APS-C cameras 14mm on "full-frame" cameras Are these considered ultra wide-angle?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
Yes they are? Though 14mm on M43 isn’t ultra wide, you need something less than 10mm

Great video Jimmy, one question, which on do you prefer laowa 6mm or panasonic 9mm for landscape photography?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
6mm hands down. Only because it has better distortion control and really really good sunstars (if you use it), also 6mm is quite a lot wider than 9mm too so it depends on your use. 9mm is great don't get me wrong and I think it's sharper at f2, but it's academic. 9mm also has more distortion and relying on digital corrections that means you lose actual pixels after corrections.

Question. Jimmy, is the Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 still a good choice in 2023? Many thanks, Peter.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
Yes Peter, it's a great lens that I love using for my jobs. A high performing lens indeed, the reason I don't use it often these days for videos or vlogs is because of its size and weight, which the PL9mm or Laowa 6mm are much smaller and lighter (and has faster aperture).

@genesamit1487
@genesamit1487 Год назад
Am I correct. Do you tilt the camera down to eliminate the distortion?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography Год назад
No really, tilting down the camera will introduce more vertical distortion, you need to stay level with the subject to have zero effect, but distortion is more than just lines, there's also curvature that introduce by optical effects by being an ultra wide and distance to subject too.
