Very true. Choosing a preset and being done is just silly. A preset is merely the starting point from which you adjust the settings to the sweet spot between what you like and what your hardware is capable of.
@ETophales
@ETophales 2 года назад
While tweaking will always get the best results, my real take from this, which I think is what's new about this investigation, is that just moving back one preset will usually get a significant performance boost with hardly an effect on quality. That's great news for those who don't care to tinker.

Yep, High is a great starting point for binary search through all the settings :) then set one setting Ultra and compare visuals + FPS, then reduce it until visual downgrade is too jarring. Continue until every setting is tweaked, starting with texture resolution/filtering ultra and native resolution, then dabbling in DLSS/supersampling by the end.

That's the fun part in my opinion. Anyone with the mindset to just set it and forget it more often than tweaking custom settings will probably be better off just getting a console. And I say that without any malice intent. Ever since I switched over to strictly PC gaming after playing on consoles for years, the options to tweak settings have to be something a person enjoy to do or every new game they play will feel more like a chore to optimize for their hardware instead of being an enjoyable experience.

As a small-time indie dev, I'm kinda glad you made this video. When I've implemented graphical settings, I've always thought to myself that I might as well let people set the render scale to 16x native if they want to, or render shadows at 16x normal resolution if they want to. It's literally zero skin off my back to just increase the max value of the slider, and I imagine many of the "ultra" settings come from a similar mindset. However, I've started noticing people who just max out everything without second thought, even though the maxima are just ridiculous settings, and then they come and complain that it doesn't perform well, so your point of "complaining about poor optimization at ultra settings" really hit home with me. It pains me, but I've started thinking that I probably have to start limit the maximum settings to "reasonable" values just to keep people from harming themselves.
@dennisjungbauer4467
@dennisjungbauer4467 2 года назад
I think a good approach is to make somewhat reasonable decisions to push hardware and future-proof the graphics a bit, but if there's a lot of potential "harm", you can make it customizable via an INI file or such free of in-game boundaries. But I guess that depends on the engine you work with, how easy this can be done and if you want to spend the time for that. Also, resolution scale shouldn't be a part of the presets and default to 1x/100% and be adjustable separately. I assume most people just leave it like that and don't push the slider to max, like it's done for the preset.

That's absolutely true, and some game even warn you about it, like Kingdom Come for example. But that worked until last year. I can't afford (and don't want to) pay scalper prices, and when I upgrade it will be for something better than my current 980 Ti, but anything above that GPU is still $500+ today while it's really a mid-range card these days. Entry-level and mid-ranged GPUs simply don't exist anymore. A brand new RX 590 was going for under 200$ two years ago, often under 150$ with good deals, now you can't find a used one under 300$, and you'd still need to be lucky for that as most are sold 400$+

Myea, I pretty much agree. I also come from a time when it was just "Cool, this game is a thing and runs.", no matter how it looked or performed. - But that's just not how games are anymore. They're not two-dimensional side-scrolling games that are fine at like 30fps or anything like that. - Games are much more made after "real life", even if it's fantastical, and it SHOULD basically be high-fidelity and high-performance. - There's nothing wrong with that, it's just how it should be, really. - Then again, expecting too much is indeed not good.

@@Boodoo4You Many people are influenced by marketing and hype and while some of us are more aware than others we are all effected by it if you consume media from channels like Digital Foundry or other channels that glamorize high end hardware, maxed out settings and ray tracing. You can often see the effects of hype and marketing in the comments section when people talk more about maxing out the settings and their hardware than the game and what they liked about it. There's a reason why hardware manufacturers make sponsored content with some of the bigger channels, why they send them their flagship for "review" well before the item goes on sale because influencers are a part of marketing today. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with wanting to max out graphics of course but what I'm saying is that you can enjoy a game and get immersed into it playing in high, medium or even low if you had no other choice. I'm sure that is going to drastically change once developers start learning real optimization techniques for the current gen consoles. But by the time those games start rolling out, PC hardware will have had a few more upgrades to overcome the lack of PC optimization, and the settings will still likely be comparable to medium or lower settings for the PC versions.

After a while the honeymoon ends and rationality kicks in, so you lower them to high for more fps or for the same fps with less power consumption and noise. I think they do have their use especially for developers to flex an engines capabilities but I also think that we shouldn't bundle multiple aspects into 1 "Ultra" settings. Shadows for example can be broken down to draw distance, contact hardening, resolution, filtering, instead of just "Ultra". This would give players more room to configure instead of having to sacrifice certain aspects of shadows by dropping from just ultra to high. I've seen so many cases where dropping shadows from just ultra to high takes away soft shadows and dramatically decreases the filtering quality. This goes to other settings as well like reflections, lighting, post processing etc

My biggest gripe with PC gaming is the potential minefield of graphics settings. The games that offer an immediate preview of a setting change are a god send. This at least gives the user a chance of figuring out what each setting actually does in game rather than having to try and remember what the visuals looked like before changing a setting. And that's if the game even allows the setting to change without a restart.

I prefer going through each setting individually untill I find the perfect mix of quality and performance. It does take a bit more time but you only have to do it once per game so it's not too bad. I do it like this because not every single setting has the same impact on performance. For example anisotropic filtering won't be maxed out if I use a lower preset than ultra but 16x anisotropic filtering pretty much doesn't lower the performance while making the game look better. Also I usually don't like motion blur and selecting some preset often turns on the motion blur. One of many reasons why I prefer PC gaming is because I can play around with settings untill it's exactly how I like it.

For newer games these days, what I do usually for my setup (i9-7900X, 1080 Ti, 32GB 3200Mhz) is: 1. Use maxed preset. 2. See if I can get stable 60 FPS on it. 3. If not, turn down shadows first. Shadows are usually not even noticeable once you're immersed in the game. Anything that looks smooth and not pixelated but doesn't take a big hit on thge FPS is fine. 4. Check FPS again. 5. If still not 60 FPS, turn down reflections. These two are the two most hardest hitting settings that I noticed over the years. They don't even matter in games that hardly have any reflections going on, so make use as much of it when you can. Then you can start optimizing with the rest of the settings, or maybe not. If you already achieved stable 60FPS, go out of the menus and start playing.

One little nit-pick - I'm not sure turning down settings creates less stress for your hardware, since you'll see a commensurate increase in frame rate to go with the lower settings. I would think the stress, and relative power draw, would be about the same. This kind of claim shouldn't be made without specific testing (like, monitoring GPU temps and power draw). I wouldn't use the word "expensive" for the graphics cards in this day and age, I'd use the word "OVERPRICED" because that's far more accurate.
@BljesakiOluja
@BljesakiOluja 2 года назад
@Mc76 Same result does not mean equal weight. A 1000 dead of old age or a 1000 dead from desease in NOT the same. An expensive graphics card is a top tier card that cost a lot. An overpriced graphics card is the same card valued beyond its actual worth due to factors not relevant to the performance of the card itself. Get what I'm saying?

@JeremyCuddles Pretty much everything you said is wrong except for "circumstanaces", but that just avoids the issue of current price, real price and performance.

I agree its accurate looking at recent history but with announcements of shortages pretty much across the board for many components looking to hold out for quite a while (comapines announcing they expect to meet demand in 2024 etc.) tsmc increasing the cost of allocation by 20% and depending on most likely how accepted crypto remains and the way governments deal with it there is still plenty of uncertainty.

whoa there Tim your talking sense. Has Nvidia sent out another threating letter about your editorial direction yet? I mean they're "All in" on FPS draining features and your talking about something that goes against their philosophy of up charging up the sphincter for a minor bump in performance.

In a nutshell : Low = 20% quality Medium = 70% quality High = 98% quality Very High = 99% quality Ultra High = 100% quality High Textures vs Ultra Textures have huge visual clarity but for shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, tessellation and other shit stuffs, there is no significant visual loss on high compared to ultra.

The only settings I used is based on Gpu temperature not eye candy. Dial down and dial down till you get a good balance between graphics and desirable gpu temperature.

I mean its already quite common knowledge, so i thought, that games are made/optimized for low/mid/high settings, anything above is just achieved with brute force and the fps loss to quality gain ratio is laughable. For years now games do even lock good at low settings, something that was a big change at some point as previously games looked utter rubbish on anything but medium. The reason for all this development is simply put the streamlining process in multiplatform development. Where low/mid/high just resemble the different consoles the game is going to be released on. At least something good that came from multiplatform development.

Thanks Tim! it would have been very interesting tho to run the test also with an older GPU like a 2060/Vega or something similar, so even people with last-gen GPUs could see that they can still run most of the games that they want to play.

Yes you hit the nail on head if take a look at say steam This quick grab of the lists of top 12 GPU that total around 45% of GPU in play So I like to see guide that features GPU that most people have and playing with It is interesting that 3070 is 11 on this list and is only has 1.69% So most people are using older hardware can we see more of this and advice on getting the best out of it NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 AMD Radeon RX 580

I always play games on High. Ultra is meant for reviewers to provide screen shots and clips of the highest graphics settings. I can’t tell a difference between High and Ultra.

Great video! You should include No Man's Sky in your testing. The differences between presets in that one are easily perceptible and quantifiable. Also, stronger emphasis on VRAM and GPU temperatures would be much appreciated. FPS and texture fidelity are no longer the most important criteria in an ecosystem where the majority of GPUs are old and pretty burned from usage.

I don't think I've ever started playing a game without quickly running through its settings. Been disabling motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, TAA, oversharpening, DoF, vignette, etc since I was a kid. Also usually go with medium/high settings on most options except stuff like textures and model detail, regardless of my rig. It sometimes brings it from 60 to 100 FPS sometimes with next to no noticeable difference and 5-10 minutes of effort.

10000%. I argued with someone the other day on the AMD sub, he reckoned my 3060 Ti couldn’t push 4K ever lol. Some tweaked settings and even the latest games can run at acceptable frame rates (60 FPS) at 4K with very little loss in visual quality. And that’s even more true with DLSS and FSR. I also don’t both with raytracing typically, unless DLSS is also on offer and I can get it working well.

@@spectre722 weirdly the dude who was arguing with me and claimed a 3060 Ti physically cannot output 4K at 60hz+ has a 3080 lol, which is why I thought of it: I’m assuming the moron was running ultra settings and complaining that his 3080 couldn’t get the FPS he wanted, and so assumed my 3060 Ti couldn’t either. The art of tweaking settings for maximum perf with maximum image quality appears to be dying

One really critical detail that I'm surprised wasn't brought up is texture detail: These days, the highest level of texture detail is typically only meant for 4K displays. For anyone who has limited VRAM, this can seriously diminish performance. Otherwise if you have the VRAM, might as well max out textures because textures don't really do much to affect performance on GPUs with their VRAM filled up.

I don't buy a top-end graphics card to play modern games on max. I buy them to play games 6 years from now on standard.
