My first aid kit in my INCH bag is way to weighty, but I would rather have something and not need it than to need something and not have it. Also it is designed to help others too. I learned the hard way when I cut my finger while making cross bow darts. Because of where the deep cut was (middle joint of my index finger) it kept getting banged up and rebleeding for days. I quickly learned that I didn't even have enough bandaid so like I said I would rather have it and not need it...

It's funny people are telling you how to hike with as long as you have been doing this. You all have some real trips under your belt, not just out for the two day weekend hike. I agree with the pack cover, I do still have a dry bag inside my pack. With my ultra light pack cover it just keeps my pack dry and not weighted down by water weight. Also the stakes, you are correct, some times you have to balance logic and weight you carry. If you've ever went out and tried to use sticks as stakes...nope. I use titanium stakes as well, you come out ahead in weight by not caring a knife big enough to actually make a proper stake. Also your point about getting cought out in a storm is so true, not the best time to be looking for sticks in a down pour. To eaches own I guess. Great video.

Just getting in the backpacking myself but I got to say that I love your Channel. Thank you for making enjoyable videos that are down to earth

I got lots of soot from my alcohol stove when I last used it to cook in my canteen cup during a power outage but it was easy to clean up, I have a thin pair of SmartWool socks that are thin, they are going with me when I go to a "met-up" camp next month, other pairs of socks are also in my pack

Very Good Review! I have the same packcover from Dutch. So far over the years I have not once had any problems with my gear getting wet inside. I'm also still using fuel cubes. I have been testing cheaper cubes lately with good results. My base weight is between 12 and 13 lbs, but I will allow up to 2 extra lbs for a few luxury items.
@sintax77

I bought them at our local Meijer store for $2.49 -8 pack. It was so far my best cheap brand test. I'll leave an online link for you when I find it.This is one place, but others do sell them. www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwiGwIT68aXVAhWOtsAKHRnEBHoYABAEGgJpbQ&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESEeD2KgZpxO2gvXp69W_MEKb7&sig=AOD64_1JqVSHmKKLmfbcRlJZ0r43s34q4A&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwi-vvz58aXVAhVm9YMKHS2fC34QvhcINg&adurl=

That's a good price! It was $2.19, but $2.30 is good. We heard some strange animal noises in our backyard one night. Bobcats are common behind our house, but after researching the sounds I'll give it a 95% chance that it was a mountain lion. They are very rare in my area, but have been seen in the past. I don't want to mess around with that!!

I fell in a river the other day while crossing and thought of this video :-) I actually use both a Dutch pack cover for the reasons you said and also have all my quilts/hammock in a ZPacks liner. I was happy for that liner when my Ohm took a dunk. Looking forward to receiving my burgerwear t-shirt ;-)

Love your videos and have a question maybe you can answer. If you were to build one hammock setup that would be most versatile for 3 seasons and given fall can get to 0 Celsius in the earl mornings what would it look like ? I am looking for lightweight and as versatile for someone with about $500 to spend. One day I would like to own multiple underquilts and top quilts but I am wondering if you can layer your hammock gear like you layer your clothes. Can a sheet of reflectix out between the underquilt and the hammock fabric be a lightweight idea to get you from summer into fall ? Thanks for these videos.

The only 'skeeter net I use for ultra-light is a large head net over a baseball cap, both night and day. Sleeping in it is a bit claustrophobic til you get used to it, but it works ( at least until meal times! ). Then do without a fitted bug net on hammock, inner tent or bivi.

I want to get myself a SPOT for my Family's peace of mind when I finally get the chance to hit the AT. Also, if I remember, that Garmin has a camera in it that can put a GPS tag on your photos. That would be a neat little touch to add to pictures I want to take on the AT. So yeah, they may add a little more pack weight, but it is always good to have a back up in case cel service decides to go away, or your phone dies on the trail.

i agree with you on the Katadyn BeFree what a great filter. Do you ever have any issues with the flow rate slowing down over a couple days of filtering water? Also if you do how do you flush yours on the trail? But overall i love the system i bought a 3L reserve bag for camp. Thaat Makes it real nice when water is not so close to where i am camping. Thanks
@sintax77
@sintax77 7 лет назад
+Tweets From The Trail I have not personally had any slow down issues yet. I clean it in between uses by simply shaking it vigorously in the same (preferably moving) water source that I'm taking water from. It can also be ran under a faucet when back at home.

Regarding the rain pants (42:23 on the video)... I concur with the two points made on the video... a) they can be cumbersome to put on b) you often feel like you are far wetter from your sweat wearing these things, than you would be from the rain that they repelled. I still use a rain jacket, but my solution for keeping dry below the waist was to ditch the rain pants, and go with a rain kilt. I took inspiration from this article. trailtopeak.com/2015/10/16/diy-gear-learn-how-to-make-a-tyvek-rain-kilt-skirt-to-keep-your-legs-dry-in-wet-weather/ The Tyvek kilt is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to put on......it keeps you reasonably dry (face it...if you are hiking in the rain, you are going to get wet....you won't stay totally dry). It also lets you breath because air circulates beneath you. You don't feel like you are inside a plastic bag soaking in your own sweat...like you do with rain pants. It can also double as a ground cloth. You have good freedom of movement if you are hiking with it on.... And I get a sense of satisfaction from making my own DIY gear.

Use the bottles to max of exp date. Reason: The BPA breaks down around that time. Trust me i had a drink from a plastic bottle that had expired and it had small particles in it that i actually could feel in my mouth and yea it was a sealed bottle so it had been there a while. (And if the BPA breaks down the bottle will break faster). for the rest on the bottle part i agree.

I'm a little new to your channel so maybe you've already gone over this before but have you tried using a Super Cat alcohol stove? Andrew Skurka says he uses one when he solo hikes and he says he budgets about .7 oz of fuel per 2 cups of boiled water. The one I use is a similar variation of it and I think I get even better efficiency than that. Because fuel is the heavy part of an alcohol set up it makes sense to me to try and minimize how much I take by increasing my efficiency.

Thanks for yet another awesome video :) I was wondering how the Esbit cubes perform under colder temperatures? Any trouble lighting them, or are they less efficient?
@sintax77
@sintax77 7 лет назад
+Silje Berntsen No problem with the esbit cubes lighting or burning in cold temps. As with any stove, the lower ambient temperature and therefore, most likely colder water sources, will slow heating times down a bit. Since the Esbit cubes don't really burn as agressively as pressurized stoves in the first place, I typically don't use them in deep winter for the sake of time and convenience. It's certainly possible though.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.Just pulled the trigger on the cuben hex tarp. Do you use a continuous ridge line? I have been told that a ridge line under the tarp will eventually damage it. Any thoughts?
@sintax77
@sintax77 7 лет назад
I do use a continuous ridgeline. I typically hang my tarp _underneath_ it though, so it doesn't actually touch the tarp. This allows me to pitch the tarp down a little closer to the ground, while still keeping the line high and above the hammock suspension lines.

They definitely are - I don't blame you at all. I remember buying my Sea to Summit cover back when I first started backpacking. What do you think of the Zpack Arc Blast for carrying this loadout?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 7 лет назад
As far the pack cover and your question, I had the same mentality when I carried the Osprey Exos. It weighs a ton when it gets wet. I had a very bad experience where on accident going through heavy brush, my dutch pack cover moved up from the bottom and when I set it down it soaked through and my sleep system got wet. Not a big deal at 65 degrees but had it been colder it would have sucked.. When I switched to a Zpacks Arc Haul it soaked up barely anything. I used a trash compactor bag for a bit but ultimately decided on a zpacks cuben pack liner which is just a gigantic dry bag. It's lighter than a trash compactor bag/the dutchware rain cover and seems to work great.
@sintax77
@sintax77 7 лет назад
Oh, man - that's a bummer. Glad to hear you've got a remedy for it now, though. Now that you mention it - my friend Mike uses a trash bag around his sleeping bag, etc in a addition to his pack cover due to some previous issues and he uses an Osprey Exos as well.
