Thank you as always for the quality of content. You are one of the reasons I got out on the Pennsylvania Mid State Trail. I am guiding a group of four guys, mostly new to backpacking, out on a short section tonight with temps dropping to 27 degrees. Thanks for the inspiration!

I was a diehard hammock camper for a few years. That was before I dropped dime on a Duplex and a Tensor pad. The hammock is so comfortable but the extra room in the tent is worth the sacrifice. Plus the Duplex is bombproof, and I can set that beast up in under 5 minutes. Yeah a tarp can go up pretty quick, but with the Duplex you got your full shelter set up in the same time.

@@FrozensAdventures I have the HG 12'tarp w/doors. I love this tarp, but if the rain is blowing I've had some issues. Probably some do with the setup as I really wasn't ready for the sideways rain. No way I'm spending anymore money for a long time on a tarp, but how much wider is that LiteAF? Visually is doesn't look that much wider.

Bought Altra Timps 3 in Hanover NH and got about 500 miles but they were torn up. NY, NJ and half of PA were not kind to them. Replaced them in Hamburg, PA with Merrills but went back to the 4.5s in Roanoke because they were so much lighter. Also love my Dream Hammock Darien.

I dig the people that use ultra light set ups and would never rag on them. Me being ex military though I’m going to go with an Ospray for my first major thru hike pack. Only because I like torturing myself. :) I’m sure once I hit a certain age though I’ll be going full ultra light to save my knees and back more. I always love everyone’s gear videos because I take picks from them all and go from there to see what I like. As usual, great video and gear list.

I have a heavy osprey bag. It carries well, most of my other gear is pretty light. Allows me to bring a few luxury items. Winter hiking requires more carrying capacity. I'll probably keep the Osprey for those times. Might try a frame less next summer.

I did the Dana designs thing (very very heavy) for years and then the Ospry pack thing (heavy) and finally pulled the trigger (see what I did there?) on A ULA pack. Never going back. It takes time (decades?) to refine your load. See you on the trail.

Frozen... thanks for the video. Regarding shirt - I've loved the Smartwool short sleeve. It does a great job not getting funky and an excellent job wicking that moisture. Yes, pricey -- but mine hasn't shown wear after countless walks and hikes. I've even tried to see how many sweaty days till a wash is required -- haven't come to a day yet vs. the columbia ridgeline shirt -- whew! Highly recommend the smartwool.

Always luv watching your videos man! I gotta add my 2 cents tho, and say that I really hope that Altra keeps the Timps a more narrow shoe because they’re the only Altras I can wear. I have a more narrow foot and I was able to really lock down my forefoot in that shoe. I have spoken with a bunch of other hikers that have narrow feet and they’ve really enjoyed that shoe as well. Unfortunately the Lone Peaks were just too wide and I found that they got too floppy over time, and the Timps’ quantic midsole really changed the game for me.

I love the Champion t-shirts. Pretty durable for a low price. Now that they aren’t Target’s in store workout brand, they are harder to locate. If you want to spend a little extra on a t-shirt, the REI store brand of wool t-shirts are pretty nice. Full price is lower than most name brands, and if you have time to watch for sales, you can get one for $35. I picked one up on sale for backpacking this year, and find it very comfortable. wool definitely gets less stinky than synthetics after 3 days.

Love the gear video esp the Hammock and Tent options, I also have both (rocking the BA). Out of curiosity I added the weights of the Hammock (Tarp, Ham+Sus, UQ, Stakes) at 1203g and the Tent (Pad, Tent, Stakes and 1 Pole) at 1146g so a difference of 57g or 2oz (did not count TQ as that is a wash). They seem pretty close... now I added the 1 Pole because you do not need them for the Hammock (yes I know Porch mode) but you HAVE to have One for the Plex. Food for thought, now if I can only wrap my mind around a trail bidet :)

Tops - from light to heavy...Paka - Mens Tee, Kokatat WoolCore T, Longsleeve probably an Icebreaker. Hoody - Melly or Burgeon Outdoors (these are essentially the same, but you CAN get the Burgeon w/out traveling to Colorado). I have a new Alpha Hoody from Senchi, we'll see how it goes as far as durability (?) but it IS light and warm. Mid-layer - a Give'r Ol' Faithful. I sat though the entire video and wasn't bored. Most gear videos get a third of the way through and it's yawn time. Are you brave or just use a well carved stick if you "misplace" a stake?

Good point. I am meticulous about where I place my tent stakes putting in and taking out of the ground. One time i forgot my stake bag all together and had to make do with sticks. It worked out fine but wouldn't want to do it in bad or windy weather.

Hey Dandelion. No, but it's easy enough to do. You can buy also just buy the bracket with the shock cord mod on litesmith.com.

Hey frozen, I'm jumping into the winter backpacking game this year. I generally prefer a regular canister stove. Do you think I need to invest in a whisperlight or some kind of white gas stove or do you think I can get by with a supercat or fancy feast alcohol stove for cold temps?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 2 года назад
Anything under a continuous 20F degrees I go with my whisper lite. It's a bomb proof reliable stove as long as you perform the yearly maintenance.

I must sleep on my side or else I get sleep apnea on my back (I just don't get deep sleep as my air way closes off and have to come out of deep sleep to open my air way etc), so I have a nice thick air pad, but I want to try the hammock route but I have no where around my area that sells hammocks so I have to buy online. Whats the best lightest 'Dream Hammocks' brand hammock you would recommend for a 6ft male around 160 pounds, is there a specific model, length, width and weight of fabric you would recommend? I must be able to sleep 'straight' on my side in it. I can't sleep in the normal jungle style hammocks as they force me onto my back and even then they hyper extend my knees etc it was horrible. I need to sleep flat on my side. Would really appreciate the help. I emailed them but didn't get a reply, I think they are short staffed at the moment so probably too busy. I also hear the Warbonnet Blackbird model is good for side sleeping too? but I'm sure you've done your homework on them and decided Dream Hammocks are better? Thanks
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 2 года назад
So Dream Hammock had a family member pass away recently that's why they are behind, terrible and unexpected. For a hammock here's somethings to look for. You're 6 foot, get an 11 foot hammock with a wide fabric. The lightest fabric they sell that would accommodate you will be a 1.2 MTN XL fabric. Take a look at the fabric : dreamhammock.info/fabrics/fabrics.html You'll want a fabric that has a max fabric width of 65" or more. The wider the fabric the flatter the lay BUT the bigger the tarp you will need to cover yourself. Hope that helps buddy! I used to use Warbonnet but they recently limit the fabric choices and I've shyed away from them. You just missed a 10% discount code for Dream Hammock that I gave my subscribers!

Do you use some type of adapter to inflate the sleeping pad with the pack liner

I've had a ton of comments when I showed this off in a video but no there isn't an adapter in the setup. I'll get a video out for you next week on exactly how I do it as I thing a lot of people would benefit. I have known about it for so long I started to think it was just something everyone did, man I was wrong! Comin up buddy!

@@FrozensAdventures In the past I had what I would term a spout from msr that I attached to a my plastic bag liner that connected to the pad air valve. I have my two year old tensor in the mail to Nemo because of numerous holes on the bottom in what I would term the valleys of the inflated pad. I thought I had patched three of them and last week on a trip it seemed to lose all air in a short while so luckily the ground was not that cold and other nights I used it deflated along with a Thinlight foam pad on top of leaves and pine needles for some form of insulation and got by.

Ive ripped trash compactor bags… meanwhile my same nylofume bag has been going strong for 500+ miles and ~25 days. Id say for a long trip u should still stick w the nylofume :)
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 2 года назад
So when I used nylofume on my thru hike it leaked on 3 occasions. Water was sitting at the bottom of the nylofume bags. I correctly sealed it but after submerging in water I found air bubbles coming out of the seam. My pack an zpacks arc haul at the time and it was quite cold and rainy. My topquilt was on the bottom of the pack and it would have been a crappy few days had I not also had my underquilt from my hammock. I was sleeping in the shelters of the smokies at the time.
@eaferstl
@eaferstl 2 года назад
@@FrozensAdventures interesting! Ive even used the nylofume in BWCA where it was fully submerged once or twice... bone dry inside. I was using a GG Kumo so not waterproof pack. Goes to show the importance of redundancies(anything can fail)
