Astradyne is a masterpiece I wish more people had heard. The whole album is a masterpiece. At times when I wish I were younger, I remind myself that if that were true, I wouldn't have been around for that magical time when the 70s became the 80s and Ultravox, Gary Numan, Human League, Duran Duran, and the like , gave us music that was so exciting and innovative . The New Romantics.

And how. I bought it, listened to it, call a friend saying: "I've got a masterwork! Care to listen?" Then we had it on repeat on the Technics turntable for several evenings. Note for the Young: actually sitting down, shutting up and listening to a record 10 or 20 times was totally a thing in those more civilized times called the Eighties.

It's funny, because the US version of the LP starts with Sleepwalk, so I got used to the album beginning with the "sssshhhhhh" sound of that song

I got the cassette on a whim, knowing some people (in certain circles) who consider this album a masterpiece. Just putting on the album, I knew instantly it was something special indeed. Especially deeper into the album. US cassette, so Sleepwalker was the starter. Mr. X is arguably one of the best songs ever!! I was amazed when the instrumentation reminded me so much of FM's Black Noise

A fantastic album with Midge Ure as singer. I remeber the 80´s like a "horn of plenty" for music. There was an unmatched creativity and in every genre. One explenation is that the 80`s was the golden era for the vinyl record. "Too much" was spended on vinyl records...
@dthorne4602
@dthorne4602 Год назад
Many reasons for good music in the 80s, among them. Midi, synthesizers became affordable, mtv, punk rockers maturing musically, independent labels signing artists that would normally go to big studios or never get contracts at all. Many more album oriented radio stations playing things other than top 40 hits. bands like devo, police, talking heads, the cars, blondie etc getting massive radio play and resetting expectations of what a hit can sound like, inspiring other artists.

+stefanos2691 Carlos, Wurman, and Tomita (Electric Samurai album) are all purely electronic and predate Phaedra. Cluster '71 too though they used oscillators and treated organs rather than synthesisers. However none of the above got close to electropop or new wave. I'd have to go for Kraftwerk for the earliest electropop.
@canadude6401
@canadude6401 7 лет назад
"synth-POP" as Rob H refers to above: "Pop" being the operative word meaning accessible music that would find its way to the radio. Most early Synthesizer music was experimental and were pioneered by the likes of Kraftwerk, Wendy Carlos (check out her/his soundtrack work on A Clockwork Orange), Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, etc. The POP or New Wave took what early artists did and made it fun, pop-like and accessible to the general public.

There are 4 or 5 truly ground breaking synth albums that define this period. 1) Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle (Replicas is a very very close second!) 2) Ultravox - Vienna 3) The Human League - Dare. 4) OMD - Architecture and Morality. 5) Visage - Visage There other brilliant albums by these and other artists but these are by far the stand out albums. Lets have your thoughts (synth albums only please)

Two remarks: 1) Your Top 5 is probably too UK orientedI'm sure you should include the German band Kraftwerk too. And what about good ole Jean Michel Jarre ? It's as if you're making a top 5 of hardrock bands, and don't include Deep Purple and other granddaddies... 2) The single Visage was very entertaining, but the album was an uneven exercise. So, not sure if it is good enough to be in a top 5. Top 20 yes, top 10 maybe, but not top 5. Indeed, I'd rather add Depeche Mode or Soft Cell. Anyway, don't be misled by the Ritchie Blackmore picture in front of my name, although I really love hardrock too, I seem to have all essential electropop records.

The first Saga-CD's / LP's too were very synthesizer-oriented, even if the band counterbalanced it with a rocking guitar. One foot in synth music, one in AOR. A nice cross over in fact, but of course, the real synthesizer fans find it too rocking, and the rock fans find it too synth oriented. It takes odd ducks like me to like it :0))

What a tremendous era this was - In 1980 the UK served us with such brilliant music and albums: Siouxsie & the Banshees "Kaleidoskope" , Depeche Mode`s debut "Speak & Spell" Human League with "Travelogue" , Visage debut "Visage" Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark ‎- Organisation, Magazine ‎- The Correct Use Of Soap , John Foxx ‎- Metamatic and this brilliant album!!! Vienna reached number 2 in the British singles pop chart’s , held back to number one by joe dolce with shadup a you’re face . Dolce faded into obscurity and ultravox succeeded and the greatest new wave 🌊 pop phenomenon emerged fronted by the great midge ure

I love this album. It really takes me back to early 1981 when I bought this, sitting in my flat, thinking back to the previous Summer, now it was cold and grey but I think back to warmer times. Im listening now and I feel myself going right back to those funny peculiar times. Im glad this is here.

I remember, back in that time we listened to this album as an acceleration, a speed up to that new world that we dreamed would begin in 2000. It seemed to be too far for us then but listening to the ultravox we felt we belonged to that age. We were dreaming of that age as a "Brave New World" But now after so many years There is only one thing that remained: the great ultravox. (Greetings from Hungary)

This album is ahead of it's time. A synth pop-rock masterpiece. Starting with Astradyne......EPIC......followed up by Passing Strangers, Sleepwalk etc....and finishing with All Stood Still. ASS KICKING GENIUS for it's time!!!!

It's funny because the Canadian (North American?) version of the album starts with Sleepwalk, so for me this album always started with the "shhhoooooop" of Sleepwalk, not the tinkles of Astradyne....

The title cut still stands up after 40 yrs.. Many years since I've dragged out the vinyl, forgot how good the opening "Astradyne" is. Lament is still my favorite album as I always felt it solid from beginning to end, but some great moments here....

This album was in very heavy rotation on my turntable from 1980 to probably ‘85 or ‘86, and rarely went long unplayed until the late ‘90s. I can’t believe no one has mentioned the dreamy homoeroticism of Mr. X, with its evocative WWII imagery, which I found fascinating. I agree with everyone who’s mentioned how the whole album holds together, beginning to end. Someone else mentioned it was ahead of its time, but I think it is a perfect embodiment of its time: the Cold War with its nuclear annihilation paranoia backdrop, Conny Plank’s echoey synthesized sound, budding sense of Pan-Europeanism, and subtle homoeroticism. In the same way, “Reap The Wild Wind” captures the AIDS era zeitgeist, with its own grief, fear, and loss of innocence.

I second you with that, for me Mr X is by far the best song on this album. They have never been closer to Kraftwerk than with this track. Never thought about the homoeroticism you're mentioning though, I just took it as some sort of mystery novel.... By the way, have you ever listen to the german version of Mr X, also very good ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qPGmERBLiT8.html

Had this album back then. Swapped it for Speak and Spell by Depeche Mode. Good swap? Listening back to this I realize what a classic album this was and still is. The title track for me isn't one of their best but it's still very good. Some of the best electronic music you can get in my opinion. The earlier albums with Jon Foxx are awesome as well.
