Aaah, the good old days of taking a beat-up ghetto-blaster with black-metal mixtapes, a bag of weed, a couple of beers, some sausages and a bag of coal into the woods for some late-night grilling with a handful of other metalheads... That was back around 99 to 2001 if I remember correctly. The memories of doing stupid, irresponsible stuff and always getting away with it. I don't miss these days but I'm happy I lived them...

I have a soft spot for Natterns Madrigal but this, to me, is the hallmark of Atmospheric Black Metal. The sprinkles of dark folk give it such a heavenly touch. Many bands made came and gone, but none could emulate the magic. Thank you for this priceless gift Ulver.

If i were to call any black metal album a masterpiece from an artistic pov there would definitely be some, In the nightside eclipse, Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom), Far away from the sun, the Paysage d’Hiver self titled, 1184, and nonetheless Bergtatt. While NM also holds a very special place in my heart, no other album by them would be a Bergtatt.

@madswm3
@madswm3 Год назад
There's a little bit of context lost in the English translations. Troldskog = troll forest. Beckoning is a closer translation of locker than calling. Bergtatt directly translated is "mountain taken" - today it's used in a more broad sense to be captivated by something (i.e. a spectacular view (not necessarily a mountain)), but the original meaning is to be taken into the mountain by the mountain people (i.e. the trolls/dwarves or whatever many names there's been for the humanoid creatures believed to live in/under the mountains). But Spellbound still conveys part of the idea though - since these creatures were believed to also use trickery and magic to draw people in. Just some additional context that non-Scandinavians might enjoy knowing.

@@madswm3 Trold/troll is also an "old" word for a wizard or any other supernatural being (not necessarily the big green ugly ones), so troldskog could be translated as enchanted or magical forest. The root word trold/troll is used in making of many other words, for example, Swedish förtrollad = enchanted/bewitched.
@madswm3
@madswm3 11 месяцев назад
@@ilona6185 Yes true. I thought with the context of being taken under the mountain and all, it would make sense for it to be troll forest, but both definitely work, even with that context. And well it's also worth noting that trolls in traditional folklore are depicted/described in many different ways.

Listened to this album last night while tripping off lsd it was 4 am and I decided to go for a walk in the woods. As reality crumbled before my eyes the beautiful melodies gave life to a forest that was breaking its self apart and allowed me to see the beauty in nature in a ways I've never experienced through the emotions portrayed in these beautifully written songs. Loneliness, sadness, rejoice, horror, life. Although I don't understand the words in the songs I can feel the emotions of each word and note.

One of the first black metal albums I ever bought. I heard 'Capitel II: Soelen gaaer bag Aase need' on the Feuersturm compilation album back in 1998, and it was one of the songs that broke me into black metal. It remains one of my favorite albums to this day.

Is it strange that i'm crying in some parts of their music, then feeling so proud of them producing this type of music, then feeling anger in others in other parts? This album makes me feel all of these emotions with such intensity and I believe most of you feel the same way or perhaps not.

Sam Oneil lol why people consider deathcrush funcore?
@Finn-gx6ir
@Finn-gx6ir 5 лет назад
@@recipoldinasty Death crush is random actually. according to necro butcher they just wanted to make extreme music. they didn't call it black metal until later on so that's probably why people consider it funcore. i have no fuckin clue what funcore is but... Death crush was the start of something new and that was norwegian black metal. Black metal bands were Bathory, mercyful fate and venom. out of all the three i think they were most inspired by bathory because bathory has that kind of screaming vocals which deathcrush uses a lot. the thing mayhem did create that helped black metal was Tremolo picking so i guess you can consider them kings of black metal for inventing that. but don't believe what i say cause maybe bathory came up with tremolo picking first. its been a while since ive listen to bathory's first album with the goat. black metal is just a huge fuckin history book haha. also sorry for the big paragraph but i love black metal i love this music the most out of any metal genre.

One of the most beautiful Metal (opened to other styles as well) albums, beyond any subgenre (Black Metal, etc...) with such beautiful atmospheres, stunning melodies, musical skills (the bass for instance is so good, acoustic guitar too, etc..) & vocal performances (the clear voice is one of the most beautiful ever, the growls very good too) that work well over time ! A blast from the past ! Probably still my favorite album of them despite some nice other offerings....👍
