Great little gun. I rounded the edges of the buttstock with a file and now I love it. Very accurate. I also have an Umarex strike point single shot pistol. The trigger is awfully long and heavy, but eventually, I got to grips with it. I also rounded the grips of this gun, since the edges were kind of sharp as well. I also removed the hood of the front sight with a bow saw. (It only took me a couple of minutes) it was horrible. Target acquisition was really hard because of that hood. Umarex is making good, affordable airguns, but I dont know why they insist on having those sharp edges on some of their airguns
Yes sir, I learned through videos on RU-vid that a scope/rifle combination was a waste of money. That's why I ordered my "new" Daisy 880 as rifle only. This Umarex looks like an interesting rifle, and thanks to your cleaning all that excess lubrication, whoever wins it will be double blessed!
@@modelnutty6503 I think it just needs seals. I will fix it one of these days. I've had it since new and was abused and neglected for many years. I need to give it alot of love.
That is a kids gun. It shoots best thirty yards or less. Kids with good eyes and proper technique do not need a scope on this entry level rifle. In the seventies I owned a crossman 760 pump master that shot bb's at about 600 fps. That gun was so accurate in combination with me shooting it every chance I could growing up on two hundred acres could shoot wasps floating across the pond at 15 yards. I killed rabbits, squirrels, giant barn rats with head shots from a bb gun also at fifteen or so yards or less. At Christmas time I used it to shoot mistletoe from trees. I have no experience with today's 760 , but the one I owned in the early to late seventies was a strong accurate rifle. I wish I still had that rifle.
@@ohshoot444 of all the pellet rifle s i have seen you shoot on utube i like the daisy 1101 s the best . It will be my next pellet rifel. I did just got the daisy 880 powerline . And I do have the 760 pump master crossman.
@@ohshoot444 o I for got to say the daisy 1101s you have got to go along way to beat it . And the price of it. I'm surprise it does not cost more . It looks like a 100.00 gun easily.
@@ohshoot444 I have found out that if you have a scope on a rifel and mount a flash light on the gun it pick s your target better. It lights up the scope in side it .
👍👍.. I don't think Ive ever heard of that kind of air rifle but it seems good. I agree about those little scopes! The one with the 880 seems decent I guess. But after trying it out I took it off bc I'm way more comfortable & consistent without it. I think just pumping was throwing it off. But I've always been a open sight shooter my whole life. I'm supposed to wear glasses too however my left eye I'm almost legally blind but right is a lot better, & together I don't notice the one is so bad. Only started about 2 years ago hunting with a scope & rifle. Until then it was shotguns & I used a open sight rifle once or twice. I do love a GOOD scope though, but one that won't zero or hold zero I can't put up with!
scope came with 880 here was an optical atrocity. the cheapo 3-7x 22mm from eBay for 13 bucks has been great. just did the 3rd mod to the little tinkertoy this morning, detailed in comment
Id like to try an umarex airgun! I ordered a ruger explorer younth break barrel at some point but cabelas never shipped it to me haha (thats when I bought the Phantom instead of being reasonnable) To clean those type of rifle without taking them appart id say a patch worm kit (or DIY Trimmer line) is the best option! I think this bad boy gets over the PAL limit after about 5 pumps haha The grouping was done with the sigs HP? I was wondering what was the weird effect on the last 2 shots and then you say the pellet came back at you 😅
fps per pump with that Umarex is right in line with an 880 too. sent ya e-mail, 880 got another really easy mod early this morning. first was FrogLube treating the straw barrel, second was mid barrel support, this morning it got the simple flat top pump piston fill job, how to: remove forearm leaves, hinge pin, 2nd pin and its wheels, remove piston. top+center of piston has a square V cavity, about 3/8" x 3/16" maybe 3/32 deep. use Q-tips and alcohol (I used acetone) to clean it really well 2-3 times, scrub with a wet one, then a couple dry ones, do it again 1-2 more times. thoroughly mix a small drop each part of JB-Weld, fill the rectangle.. you want it a few thousandths higher than flat, and slightly past the cavity. put it into something that will stand it up vertical a few hours (5-6), then put a file to it (gently) to bring the top back to level is quick/easy, if you didn't super over fill that cavity. grease stuff and reassemble. congratulations, you've just increased the compression ratio a little bit. PS, ya'll know its not my style to test before and after, right? maybe tomorrow I'll run it through the chronograph 5-6-7-8-9 pumps, with some 7 grain Daisy match pellets.
is my chronograph total junk? 3 shot average from 4 to 9 pumps, 7 grain Quicksilver match pellets. 4 pumps 520 fps 5 pumps 595 fps 6 pumps 649 fps 7 pumps 693 fps 8 pumps 734 fps 9 pumps 767 fps little 880 seems to be running a little warmer than I'd guessed for the penny mods done to it, the 7780 HP's will run a little lower muzzle speed with a little more reach, are they 7.6 grain or 7.9 grain? no scale here to know.. no biggie tho, it shoots them really tight at 15-20 yards.
seriously, is my chronograph THAT wack? I didn't do any before test, hope someone does it before+after, and comes up with really similar results! those numbers look silly high to me for an 880, even throwing slightly light 7 grain pellets. I'm floored.
@@rocknraptor3195 5 tubes FrogLube 6 bucks eBay, heat for the straw barrel was a chunk of 2" paperboard tube and a hot blow dryer about 15 minutes then swab the barrel with a patch takes 2-3 drops worth.. then a few dry patches after its cooled off, is when I did the electric tape "support bushing" for mid barrel.. was 5-6 weeks ago. did flat top piston thing early yesterday morning.. not counting non-work time, it can all be done in 30-40 minutes isn't bad. if my chronograph isn't an "optimistic liar", DANG!
Those are very accurate I have the same one but branded Ruger nxg apx with the full stock ..with H&N excite spikes u can shoot at 20 ft or little more and put pellet on pellet ..it surprised the 🤬 out of me lol
Great real world review of that rifle! I seen it at Walmart over the weekend as a RUGER NXG APX for around $65. I wonder if a picatinny conversion rail will work? What size (in mm) is the rail? What distance with a properly mounted scope do you think it will be accurate! Being an Umarex rifle always try the RWS sampler pellet pack because Umarex uses RWS pellet for developing their rflles. Nice job Travis.
I found a set of rings that will work. I think with a conversion rail, it would be fantastic! I’ve also tried a few more types of pellets and the terminators are surprising. I’m going to leave it how it is for now. I think it’s great now that I’ve shot some terminators and have a 4x mounted on it. I’m hoping to hunt with it before the giveaway.
@@ohshoot444 Glad you got it more figured out! It would be nice to see it shot well at 20-25 yards. What size is that plastic rail? Will a conversion rail fit? It would be nice to see a young teenager win or given to one!
It’s slightly smaller than all the rings I had. I found a cheap set that fit and I just ordered some adapters. If I have to I’ll get it set up and glue it. It’s really accurate. I’m sure the right person will win!
it looks really "880 equivalent" everywhere it counts, fps per pump too. did the simple 880 flat top piston job this morning, idk what to expect. no doubt it'll bump up the compression ratio a little bit anyway.
@@modelnutty6503 I just watched a guy do a chronograph test on that NXG rifle, and it only got to 584 fps at ten pumps. He didn't say how heavy the pellets were though he did say what they were; H&N excite, whatever that is. I'm assuming those are in the range of 7 to 8 grains but of course that's just a guess. For comparison, a stock 880 averages 582 fps at only 5 pumps, and 685-695 at ten pumps, with 7.4 grain pellets. Anyway, as far as boosting the 880, I just finished a performance build on one yesterday, and plan to send it to Travis for chrono/shooting/video, whatever he wants. I chrono'd it last night with 7.4 grain daisy pellets; 762 fps at 10 pumps, 850 fps at 15 pumps, and 870 fps at 17 pumps. Notice how the velocity continues to climb, instead of tapering off like a stock 880. If you want a detailed parts and instruction sheet on how to build it, let me know and give me your email. It makes for a fun build, and the extra power is so much fun!
The auto safety has pros and cons. To me it teaches someone that a gun will always go to safety, not good. On the HW97 the safety is non resettable so once it's off you better shoot it or you are sure to have an accident. The safety should always function manually and shooters should get used to using it completely.
I've found that pumping it more than 10x theres no gain. The 880 is cheaper and better and more powerful. The legacy 1000 is a beast and so is the daisy winchester XS77. You'll get 700 fps from the 880, (10 pumps). and 750+ fps from the 1000 and xs77. I chronied the 1000 @ 877fps using 7 g. Wadcutters. (10) pumps. The legacy 1000 is hard to pump past 8 pumps. I dont recommend pumping it past 12...its very powerful for what it is...
Would love to see “how” you take these down and do the mods… you do a great job and we’d love to have some of yours expertise and knowledge to make our bArgain rifles tip top.
Well I’m no expert or anything. The reason I haven’t taken this apart is I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to get it back together. But, with something like this, I’d clean really well, recrown, and knock any burrs off. Nothing crazy.
You need some 11mm scope mounts . I bumped my scope against something and the entire rear section of plastic rail broke . Wobbled for a while before coming completely off !
I love ❤️ this rifle, scope that comes with is garbage,I adjusted Iron sights to my liking and anything in 30' feet range is dead 💀... Just kidding 😂,mine doesn't have picatiny rail on the top,it's a dovetail, but irons are sufficient for me...I like how quiet it is and doesn't have twang like other springers...
Travis, Do you think Umarex puts all the oil in this and other rifles to make sure their o-rings and seals don't dry out while they wait to be sold on store shelves?
Get a tin of HN terminators. I don’t want to spoil it. But, I tried some this afternoon and I was able to get a cheap scope mounted. It’s very accurate and performs much better with the slightly lighter pellets.
I definitely can't see buying one of these. I was hoping it would be better than a Daisy 880 but it's not. First, I can shoot dime size groups at 25ft with my 880. Second, that trigger. The pull is terribly long. Lastly, I got my 880 on clearance at Meijer for $20 (regularly $40).
