I wanted to start this off by saying that the appointment didn't go as well as we'd expect but then that would scare the living daylights out of you and of me having to watch it back - the appointment itself was terrible but the results were... good? Can I say good if they confirmed that I do have cancer? Stage 2A is good though, if you are looking at a really sh!tty scale where all the options are bad but you need a "not so bad" option.
Please give it a watch, ask remind people to get their smears and to check anything unusual out straight away.

2a SCC these days has an encouraging outlook for success of treatment, the Castle Hill team will plan to blast it into remission and keep it there so get ready for really gruelling treatment Mandy but you’ll bring a positive attitude to this and I promise, if you keep your chin up, you will do much better coping with this. Don’t let arrogant medical staff get to you, I’m not making excuses for him it’s just that as a nurse myself, I tend to find the more blasé the consult, the less worried the medic is, if that’s any help. Not an excuse, just an insight! Hand over any worry to your caseworker and shelve the anxiety in between appointments, and you and John get planning the days out, the treats, big and small, and find a mindfulness course to train your mind to keep itself healthy through this. You can do this 💖 Try not to worry about John, give him practical jobs he can do for you 🙂

John will be your rock. I sat along side my wife through every Chemo and radiotherapy. My wife had a very tough regime of radiotherapy and Cisplatin chemo. Cisplatin is very tough so you need to treat it like a marathon and focus 100% on just getting through. Maggies provided great support. As a warning, if you get too tired, they will have to pause treatment, that is bad. My wife had a very similar cancer and she made it through, but others tried to carry on with their lives and they had to pause treatment as their bloods showed they couldn’t carry on and had to have a break. 2A is great news. All things considered. As the carer for my wife, we met a lot of amazing people. And every day of treatment we thought she was a day closer to ringing the end of treatment bell that was very emotional. Love from Cumbria

Hey Mandy I’ve a few things to say. First of all well done on being so open. Talking about it really helps. I’ve been here with my wife, especially the kind of straight to the point, no emotion announcement of the diagnosis. Now my wife has been a nurse specialist for 26 yrs. she said they have to do it that way. Straight to the point without sugar coating it. Forums helped her immensely, chatting with people in similar situations. The waiting is the worst part. Once the treatment starts it all happens very fast, Infact bloody amazingly fast. You will get detailed info in time but at the moment a lot of work is going on behind the scenes. MDT meetings etc. There are lots of different medical specialists to involve. Oncology, radiology, surgeons and maybe even dieticians. Very complex meetings with very clever people. Its feels like your left in the dark but they are truly working on your treatment and recovery plan to give you the very best outcome. They are truly amazing people. Keep yourself busy, talk to likeminded people and before you know it will be a distant memory. Obviously the worry never goes away completely and it never will. Take care ❤

My wife also got free prescriptions (for 3 years I think?), free parking at the hospital for a year (saves worrying about how many hours parking you need if treatment is delayed etc) and what I jokingly called the "Disney fast pass / access all areas" triage phone number. We had to call at 3am a couple of weeks into chemo (heart palpitations) and we were given priority one for paramedics. Another time she went neutropenic (5% of the average white blood cell count !!!) and had covid at the same time. We called triage and they said come to the hospital. It was 15 minutes away, by the time we arrived there was a single bed room isolation ward ready for her. Lots of folk will ask you (Mandy) how you are, very few will ask John how he is doing. From one engineer to another, go talk to someone who has knowledge of what you are going through (John). I took counselling, worth every moment.

My wife got a breast cancer diagnosis in Nov 2015 and I totally understand the emotions both you and John are going through. Her consultant/surgeon had no bedside manner whatsoever and totally ignored me when I asked questions. However, he was a brilliant surgeon and that what really mattered. My wife was convinced that the comming christmas would be her last - that's what this diagnosis does. It makes you feel like the rabbit in the headlights, what can I do , where do I go, what is going to happen to me plus a multitude of other unanswered questions. I know what John is goig through - I've been there. You want want to protect your better half and want to support her but your not sure how to because there are no words or actions that can make it better. John's time will come when he can give you support and encouragment when you are going through your treatment and help you on the road to recovery. Both you and John are very positive and determined people and that strength will get you through this difficult time. Love to you both from us in West Wales.

The circumstances and manner which you were treated was totally incorrect, irrespective of the fact NHS are under pressure there are ways things should and shouldn't be done. Some of these people reach a certain status and they become oblivious to rudness and the fundementals of caring, don't accept it consider the next person in your situation. Sorry but such a meeting whilst others were present is totally wrong, and the conduct during the meeting was also wrong. Bless you thinking of you ❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙

Many, first off I can see from your body language you have risen out of the depths of where you were - brilliant! And rightly so because the diagnosis sounds as good as any bad news can be so good on you girl 😎 But the way it sounds you were treated is diabolical. When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer the consultation was so different. It was just us, the consultant and the Macmillan nurse. Things were explained and SHE was the focus of the meeting. It sounds like your crowd had a total empathy bypass. So as I said, good on you both for dealing with it. Now concentrate on getting all the tests done, treatment started and most importantly heading out of the darkness and into the light of the rest of your life. ❤

My consultant told me all the horrible things that might happen with side effects, but the thing I reacted to most was, I had to stay out of the sunshine for the full 6 months of Chemo, all through Summer and Autumn…when I said ‘oh no, I was looking forward to being outside all through Summer’ he just stared at me like I’d lost the plot… funny how you do react to things..enjoy your Saturday fun day..x

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, after a month of tests and stuff, the treatment started with half a year of taking hormone pills. Then I'd have my operation. That operation was first scheduled during the camper holiday in France. We told my doctor, and she said: your holiday comes first. You'be booked it, you're looking forward to it, and mental health is so important in this treatment. A happy patient will get better easier, so you go for it and we'll schedule the operation after that (I also had a slow growing tumor). So we had that camper holiday, really enjoyed it, and the day after we got back, preparations started for the surgery, and I had that 3 days later. So yes, do tell your oncologist/consultant/doctor about the holiday, and ask if you can have the treatment after it. It's better to start treatment well rested and in good spirits. Go for it 🙂

I'm not sure I would deal with it so well. You are so brave and have such a positive attitude. I admire you so much. I am going to book my smear test tomorrow as I am overdue. I had put it off because of many reasons but the main one being my 80 year old mum had a hysterectomy recently as she had cancer of the womb (she has been given the all clear😄), and it has worried me sick. But as you say, it's best to get these things checked out. But hearing you talk has given me the courage to face my fear and do it anyway. Bless you Mandy. I had cervical cancer, I was 32 years old, I was devastated to bet told the news, my mum died a few weeks before so was already in a state of grief, she had cancer and was only in her fifties, I did think why is all this happening to me, I was so sad and then angry, kept all my thoughts n feelings bottled up. I had all the treatment you will be having,, 6 weeks every week day, and then the internal treatment, I was OK for the first 2 weeks of treatment but then the diarea started, I realised not to eat anything green, the extreme tiredness started so I slept a lot, when the treatment ended the radiation still keeps working so you will be tired for a while. It was gruelling, I know every emotion you are going through and sending you the biggest hug, I have watched all your vlogs from when you sold your house and moved into motorhome, so that's quite a while ago. Hi Mandy, it’s Craig the kitchen fitter I’m not sure if John told you but after I got him some hinges I took time out due to the fact I was diagnosed with bowel cancer I did make it quite public to my work colleagues at work and unbelievably two of them have come to being confident with issues that might point towards cancer so yeah making it public is important for yourself and other people. Good news is for me I’ve had an operation and it looks like it’s going to be successful. Keep your chin up and tell John to look after yourself because I know when I’ve got my diagnosis I think my wife struggled more with it than I did. Hope to see the show, if not look after yourself

I started using audio books as a way of calming down the constant overthinking at night. I set the timer to stop the book after 45 mins and just re-start it if I’m still awake. I now listen when I do gardening, housework etc or any time my inner over thinker goes in to overdrive. I always listen to a sample before I buy, to check out the narrator’s voice. Hello Mandy, watching your vlogs has urged me to look something up. Just over thirty years ago I had a hysterectomy, my uterus and cervix where removed. This wasn't due to cancer but another reason. In the past thirty years I have never been called in to have my vagina/cavity checked. I looked it up and there is a test that can and should be done so I'll be making an appointment with my GP asap. If there are any other women watching and reading the comments that this may apply to who also didn't know I suggest you seek advise from your GP too. Continuing to send positive thoughts and prayers 🙏🙏🙏.

God bless you, Mandy. I am really sorry that how the doctors handled your one on one meeting. It's good to know that it's Stage 2A and treatable. I've been through treatment for breast cancer - at the end it was Stage 1A. I went through surgery, chemo, and radiation. I wouldn't worry just yet about weight loss until you start chemo - it depends on the drugs they use. Also, they usually do the radiation last. My biggest advice based on lessons learned: REST REST REST and drink lots of water. I believe our body needs rest, which should be your priority. We're lucky we live at a time that treatment for cancer has advanced so far. It's not fun, it's grueling, but you can do it. Good luck!!

Ah I’m sorry you had to go through all that for your breast cancer but glad you’re still here to tell the tale. Chemoradiation is concurrent so I’ll have chemo and radiotherapy on the first day then 4 days of just radiation and that will last 5 weeks so my weight does need to stay the same. Resting won’t be so easy for me but I’ll be trying my best so I can kick this thing 💪🏻❤️

My mom’s oncologist started out a meeting she thought was to discuss an operable non-cancerous brain tumor with “So you know you’re dying.” She didn’t. I did, because the American Red Cross flew me home from overseas to be with her, and the diagnosis was in the paperwork. She had inoperable liver cancer. The brain tumor got her to the hospital (she hated doctors) and the body scan found liver cancer along with a benign brain tumor. Doctors have to distance to survive, but they could try to at least attempt to see things from their patient’s viewpoint.

I’m in awe at your strength! You guys are doing incredible don’t forget that. Saw you today in Harrogate and thought not going to bother you, I’m going to let you have quality time with your family and friends. I also thought you’re there buying some lunch and that lady taking your money has no idea what you’re going through. You show such courage. I just want to wish you all the very best. I live very local to Scunthorpe and know both hospitals too well I’m afraid. Your journey is long but take the strength from everyone to kick cancers arse!!! You got this….. ❤xx

thats the goodest of bad news, Mandy so on a scale 1-10 of bad a 3 is better than a 10 so thats good news. When the consultant was dictating, you absolutely had the right to interrupt. This is YOUR life! You have a right for due consideration and to be able to ask what may affect your life. Its not good!!! Anyhoo, main thing is, you are in the right place at the right time for treatment with a positive outcome. I think you're really brave and inspirational . I'm now only going to think of you as "Inspirational Mandy" and not "Unadventurious Mandy" I think you're brilliant. I'm glad you have a good and loving man in John by your side and you will prevail. My love to you both❤ - Kenny

Thank you for sharing another update Mandy. I’ve actually learned more from you than I did from my mum and her doctors when she had cervical cancer many years ago! We weren’t told as much in the 1980s. Mum is still going strong at 91 and no problems of recurrence. My friend who had breast cancer was offered massages, acupuncture, and reflexology while she was going through the treatment so take whatever you can get, it’s all about a holistic approach (My friend is cancer free now).

It was the same for my sister who has the same as you. After all the scans waited for another appointment to see specialist. Walked into a room with a woman sat there with McMillan lanyard and card around her neck, McMillan booklet in her hand. So she already knew before specialist entered room. Not much thought there is there. 🙄. Take care my lovely. X

Well articulated Mandy, i hope your next visit with the consultant is more helpful. Ask your case worker to reiterate anything you don't think they covered, that's what they are there for. Stay strong and positive and youll kick it into outer space never to be seen again. Stop worrying about everyone else, thus is your time for them to rally for you for a change, although i expect they are already doing that. Take care lovely lady x

Stay strong Mandy….your positive mindset will get you through this! Based upon my own experience you will get more answers regarding your treatment/side effects from your Oncologist & Specialist Nurse. I had to attend prior to my radiotherapy, for a CT Scan and tattoos…. This CT Scan was sent to the Radiotherapy Planning Team and my treatment started about 2 weeks later. Listen to your body whilst having treatment and rest up as much as you can. My radiotherapy was over a shorter period of time and was a higher dose. I felt fine whilst attending but the tiredness hit me afterwards and lasted for around 8 weeks - afternoon siestas got me through! Ask about a free parking pass and they will also give you a form to complete so that you can get free prescriptions. Sending you very best wishes for your treatment journey…. ❤

Mandy I think you are so right that your appointment could have been so much better and I'm sorry for that. I'm sure your case worker knows this but talk to her about it. You do appear to be stronger and more positive about this journey and I'm sure any further appointments will be more positive as you have a better idea of how things go. Stand up for yourself and/or get your caseworker to ask things for you, she will you know. As for the freebies take the lot. You've paid for them in taxes over the years 😀

Mandy you will save lives by giving all the advice on symptoms for cervical cancel without a doubt. I wasn’t aware of all the symptoms and have had a hysterectomy, so it wouldn’t affect me, but I will surely be passing the advice on. The hanging around is not nice and your life is turned upside down but stay as positive as you can. I know you have Macmillan who are fantastic, but try and find some other groups as this will be so helpful to you. Take care x

Well done Mandy ( and John) keep doing the good stuff…plan some nice things for later in the year. Simple things like a weekend away in a nice hotel, dinner and breakfast, seeing a show etc. You will most likely lose weight as you do not want to eat especially once the chemotherapy kicks in,again depending on what of chemotherapy cocktail you have, how bad the side effects are..( unfortunately there will be side effects),blisters, nausea, muscle weakness….most stop quickly once your body gets better and or use to the treatments…. Keep a positive attitude…and love in your heart. Sending you both love and prayers 👍🇬🇧

I am so in awe of your positive outlook (even though you allude to the dark moments too). And John's reaction is totally normal. My husband is the same, checking to make sure I'm not doing too much and trying to do things that I feel capable of doing. So while it may be frustrating at times, it comes from a place of love. But I am saddened to read that your appointment with the consultant was not able to answer the questions you both had and that it wasn't in a more private setting. Why there were other people there makes no sense to me, especially as they were such a distraction. It's hard enough to take in information without others talking in the background. So I'm not sure I would feel as gracious as you about the situation. At the same time I do have sympathy for the pressure that NHS workers are under at the moment and think I would try to hold on to the perspective of the consultant wanting to protect his heart rather than not appreciating the trauma of the diagnosis for you and John. I wish you all the love and hope in the world. Thank you for taking the time to share your journey. ❤❤

Oh my goodness what cruel rudeness. Saying that as a retired nurse I always found that the more arrogant they are, they usually are brilliant at what they do. Hi Mandy Don’t worry about how you feel you are on the normal emotional rollercoaster You are right the consultant’s bedside manner is not very good but the nurses when you start your treatment are brilliant My consultant never told me what stage my cancer was I had to ask him what the prognosis was which is the one me and my wife didn’t want to hear but the point blank answer he gave we new it was stage 4 and he did get me in a soon as bed was available You should be give a emergency card to phone 24 7 and that’s good cause I’ve used quite a few times and all that free parking believe me it’s safe’s you a fortune We had to phone the hospital car parking department to see how it works I’m still using the free parking during my 2 years of treatment and appointments and at £4 per hour or £15 per day you can see how soon the costs mount up ❤❤

Sending you both much love & positive thoughts. You will get through this taking one day at a time, the trip will be very rough at times, you already know that, but you will get through, you are stronger than you think. I cared for my husband through his Pancreatic cancer whilst I had breast cancer & very often didn't think I could do it but with the support of others I got through. RU-vid videos as a distraction were a saviour for us. Take care of yourselves & only do what you can, the rest can wait. Bronwyn ❤

Hi Mandy, It's me Suzi. You don't need to reply. I'm just here to support you. A nurse clued us in on a tastier drink for keeping weight up. The bottled stuff was horrible. She said to get Carnation Instant Breakfast. My husband liked it so much he still drinks it. You just need tasy stuff with lots of calories or carbs...if it tastes good, indulge yourself! Also, chemo can change how things taste. Don't worry about it...keep trying other foods and drinks and stick with what tastes good. My only other comment might sound a bit strange: You get to set the rules of engagement in your consultations. I don't know what a caseworker is, but she/he seems to be perfectly placed to implement your requirements. For example, those other people in the room who no one introduced to you...I would have asked who they were and if they had no reason to be there, I would have asked them to leave...they were unforgiveable distractions...your caseworker could possibly do that for you. I would politely ask (or caseworker can) the consultant to please refrain from dictating until the meeting is finished (simply because this is your time). I alwys hand in a list of my questions in writing, I sit there with a pad and pencil taking notes. (I admit that I'm an assertive person, a retired senior manager and I don't like "slushy" meetings of any kind.) Sending you blessings. I have the utmost faith in you Mandy. As for John...my 50 years married to the same man I've learned that they need to feel useful, to do things, fix thngs, be the help mate extraordinaire....Be that John!!! Make Mandy 1,000 cups of tea! Love to you both.

❤ your blessed to have John, I'm sure you are going to come through this hiccup (!!) in your life, I don't mean that flippantly, I have been through 3 kidney transplants and open heart surgery with my husband so I know what John is going through feeling like he wants to do more to help you, I have also been through the mill with my cervical smear , they found cancers cells which were treated back in 2000 🤞 I've been ok since then. We always try to make light of our health situation having been in a position of a Dr in ICU telling me my husband only had half an hour to live, thankfully the drugs they gave him as a last resort worked, 17 years later he's still with me, we look back on our journey and thing if theses things hadn't of happened we wouldn't have done the things we have done to make our lives more interesting. Sending love and Reiki healing to you and John ❤️❤️ xxx

Just finished watching your video and you are amazing to keep sharing your journey. Unfortunately oncologists aren’t the best with their bedside manner but I think it’s their way of coping but you’re right they should be more respectful of the patient as it is new for you. Firstly I wish you the best of luck with your forthcoming treatment. You have been amazing in how you are dealing with this and I am full of admiration. I sincerely hope you have a more positive experience when you see the oncologist. It sounds like until now you have been with the surgical team but hopefully the oncology team will have more empathy and understanding of what you need to see you through this. I was a nurse in oncology so I am disturbed by the experience you have had so far. Also PET CTs are often required if someone is being considered for radical treatment, so it is a positive thing that you are having this. Good luck and try to stay strong x

Bless u x go with the flo 😊 try to do some normal stuff in the time u have between appointments and look after each other xx ur emotions mood feelings etc will change constantly and yes maybe mindfulness will help focus and rest x from what I have seen in the comments the team I’m sure will scoop u up once the actual Treatment starts - but having worked in healthcare for many years I agree as nurses we do pick up the pieces after some consultations with consultants - and more importantly reassuringly not all apt are the same. Perhaps feedback in writing how this experience made you both feel and make it a positive thing that can be learnt from - hopefully 😊
