@@danielyang3140 it shouldn’t matter what the umpire thought, it should only matter what actually happened. When the umpire knew that he was clearly wrong he should have corrected his bad call. If the opponent was not forthcoming about being hit which apparently she wasn’t, he should have asked her if she was hit by the ball. If she answered yes, then she loses the point, and if she answers “no, it hit my racquet” then maybe she wins the point. But if it is determined after the match is over that she lied, I would think she should be punished somehow for lying. Umpire handled the whole situation very poorly, especially on an ad point. Brutal.
@HawkOfGP
@HawkOfGP Год назад
Well the problem is that the umpire can't really take a player's opinion on what happened ahead of what he thought happened unless it's a player conceding a point the umpire awarded to them incorrectly. And as things stand, there are no rules in tennis (or any other sport as far as I'm aware) to punish players after matches for lying during them. Now, of course there are things that could be done in the big tournaments to avoid situations like this, such as giving the umpire the ability to see replays for contentious calls, but that's not in the rules of tennis now. So as stupid as it may sound, after he made the initial wrong call, he couldn't really change it since he can't decide ad-hoc that he saw the event differently from what he thought he saw in the moment. The only exception to this that we have in tennis is when umpires check ball marks on clay courts on close calls.

The umpire's ruling is entirely correct, but perhaps saw it incorrectly. A ball does not typically bounce off someone's leg only to fly 4m, possibly why he ruled it had his the players racket. The fact that the umpire had not ruled a 'foul shot' means the ball was still in play at which point saying 'sorry' would be considered hindrance. Umpires make mistakes. Mocking an umpire is for making judgement calls is unnecessary. Had the roles been reversed and a male players mocked a female umpire, it would have been considered grossly unacceptable.

@Jeremy-f3s
@Jeremy-f3s 2 месяца назад
He did do his job though, he deemed that she called sorry before the ball struck the other player so applied the rule of let for any interference caused cos they can't be conducting conversations during points and saying sorry might've put the other player off through distraction. Players could use that loophole to make noises to put players off that's why the let call is the rule there. Now we and she might think she didn't say sorry til the ball hit the other player but as an umpire if she talks during a point there's got to be a let or else others will then start using that to interfere with play. That's why that decision was made. I'm sure her apology was genuine but that's not the point. You can't talk during points.
@milvao3400
@milvao3400 Месяц назад
he is being abused and mocked, for sure. Maybe not in America, where it's normal to act like that. Even if he was wrong, the player is not allowed to such behaviour and should not have done that. The point here is that he could not determine whether the ball hit the leg or the racquet, from his point of view. He could have asked the player, but he made a call and that's up to him. He can make a mistake but should not be treated like that.

@@Lishmaa That doesn't matter. You can not talk during the point. Only on a slow motion replay can you tell she didn't hit the ball. At first glance and at full speed I also thought it hit her racquet, in that case the umpire would have been correct for calling a let. But you can see her stopping play and pointing at her leg once she turns her back and walks towards her partner. And for all those claiming umpire should have revised the call: based on what? Because one of the players says so? There is no VAR or challenge with hawkeye for balls hitting a racquet or part of the body decisions… Only thing he could have done is ask the opponents to be honest about it but if they still denied it, he can only decide based on what he has seen.

The umpire made a mistake but it was a totally understandable mistake. It is very difficult to tell that the shot hits the body and not the opponent's racket. Also, the argument that "If it hit her racket, I wouldn't have said sorry" makes no sense. No umpire relies on player comments in that way. The problem was that the player who was hit never confessed. Most players would be more honest in a televised match. Seeing that the ball hit the leg and not the racket is incredibly difficult to gauge at such high speeds. I don't see why there's a view that the umpire was incompetent. Is it also incompetent if a ball that's out by a millimetre is wrongly judged in ? A mistake yes, but a totally understandable one.
@milvao3400

Commentators are WRONG. He did not interpret as if the "sorry" came BEFORE the ball hit the opponent. He thought that the opponent hit the ball with her racquet, he wasn't paying attention to the contact point of the ball or he didn't see how she hit the ball. But anyway, he could have asked the player if she hit the ball with her leg or racquet... come on, this is just a doubles match, she could have confessed and that's it! The one who's acting worst here is the player who didn't just say "ok I hit the ball with my leg", not the umpire who just made a mistake or didn't see the ball hitting the leg maybe because the player was covering it with her body from his point of view! And Riske should not have acted like that... very bad image of a tennis player, even if she was right, she had no right to react like that, explaining was enough, no need to be dirispectful to an umpire.

It's based on a technicality that if there's any noise or interference during the passage of play then they call a let. The umpire rightly or wrongly deemed she'd called out sorry before the ball had struck the other player therefore it was a noise interfering play that in other circumstances would be deemed as intention to put a player off. In this case it was a genuine apology and I don't think she said sorry til the ball hit the player but the umpire deemed it a noise made before the other player hit the ball therefore he was following the rule of interference. Yes he got the call wrong cos she didn't speak til it hit the player but he judged it differently so followed the relevant rule regarding that.

The other player clearly pointed to it hitting her leg in the replay so she should have owned up to it! Poor sportsmanship!im glad they ended up winning after this!

I can see the umpire's point ... Fruity spoke and said sorry in the midst of the shot exchange, which could be construed as hinderance. Having said that, I am not sure whether the opponent's shot was affected as she was just reacting to the volley by Riske.

They had to beat three opponents out there - and still won. The other two players should've been arguing for them as well to concede the point - zero sportsmanship. Chair umpire is wrong but they never admit being wrong or mistakes. Calls let then gives them the point. Idiot. Get out of the chair fool. I'm with the players 100% Glad they stopped to argue strongly with him - good.

Never helps to speak to them that way though, younger players don't need to see that. Make your point but keep your mouth clean.

I understand but perhaps the umps call was influenced by the fact that when the ball does come back Riske continues to play the point and hits the next shot after that back in play. Why do that? She said "sorry" because the other player got hit....good logic except don't keep playing the point when the ball does come back, and yet she did continue play which I believe influenced the umps belief that it hit only racket. Riske should have NEVER continued to play.

Referees ruin all sports all over the world, because they are too arrogant to admit they are wrong.. They should be penalized. Also the so-called supervisor blew it too. She's sitting there holding her radio and not paying attention. What a sorry crew.👎👎

So help me understand what happened here. So because she said sorry! for hitting her the umpire thought she said it before the ball actually hit her and seeing it as a distraction tactic to make her opponent miss the ball and lose the point?

there is intentional hindrance (hitting racquet on the ground to distract players, loud cmon before point is over) and unintentional hindrance (lose trash on court, lose ball on court). this is definitely unintentional. At most it's a replay, not given the point to the other players, if the umpire didn't see that it hit the leg. in this case this is alison's point. also umpire is human, maybe it was not a good angle to see that it hit the leg and not the racquet. had the opponent possessed some good sportsmanship and stated it was my leg, then it would have been reversed.
