He probably couldn't have killed without a super (would've been very close) and his other super leaves him at much less advantage after a kill, so he decided to play it safe, go for the guaranteed kill with swords and better oki than after dimension slash. Although regarding the commentator, I think he was just on autopilot and didn't think that far ahead in this specific situation.
