LETS SEE....Many folks say you need to insulate a flexible flue liner for a Woodburning Stove. The potential problem being a dangerous build up of tar and creosote if the flue gasses cool. Here I go up a flue to find to see what happens in real life.
Caveats are, this flue is only 10m, the chimney is only part exposed, it's in mid UK, the logs are seasoned and dry, the stove is used properly. ie well lit and not left slumbering.

It looked like there were some small pits/holes developing in the ridges of the liner. Am I just imagining this? Maybe hard to see watching on a phone... Thanks for the videos. Very useful as considering whether to bother insulating the flue liner we'll be putting in. It's an exterior wall but cavity is insulated so I can't imagine it would get that cold.

Nice to know there is no tar buildup. My register plate has cracked (stove installer used 5mm board instead of 12mm) and all the vermiculite is falling out. I aim to replace the plate with a steel one and not put the insulation back again.

I will rarely insulate an interior chimney, because it’s insulated enough from the house itself, especially when there’s existing tile. On an exterior chimney, 95% of the time I will put insulation around the liner, because the chimney is to cold.

How long has the liner been there also how often do you sweep the chimney

12 year it has been in at the time of recording and I think it was two years since it was last swept.
