(Un)Privileged: The Cost of Being Poor at An Elite Institution 

Thank you for this video. I feel a little bit better about my situation given that I'm not the only one. I'm currently a senior at Salem State University in Salem, MA. I am 24 years old and lost my job this semester so I eat at the homeless shelter in Lynn, MA. The government helps me pay my rent other wise I would be homeless. I don't even have money to take the bus to my school to take my final exams for this semester. Being poor and having no income is an obstacle that has not stop me yet, but I fear that it will eventually. God help me please. I want to complete my bachelor's degree. One more year.

A much needed narrative. It's refreshing to hear students who I can relate to.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm so bad at the moment and I feel like it is mostly because of my routine where I am, all the time, with rich people. Whereas they are doing all this awesome stuff and not worrying about money or their future job, I am worrying about both. They only think about what they like and what they want to do, and I just think like "OK what area can I go which I can actually make money without a masters" because I can't afford anything. Not any extra skill or any fun like going out I just needed this documentary, thank you.

I think that for these students, going to an elite school is very scary.

It's interesting, I was an openly gay, Jewish inner-city kid from Brooklyn, NY and a public school graduate who found themselves at a small, liberal arts college in rural Massachusetts. I was from an upper middle class background, I was not a first-generation college student, and I had a fairly privileged upbringing. I made and had friends of ALL different backgrounds while I was there, but I DID notice that the wealthy white students kept their distance from me and were often cold and unfriendly. There's a LOT of truth to all of their experiences, and what they're saying. I would go to meetings at the Campus Cultural Center and listen to students of color on campus have these EXACT same dialogues as the students in this film. It really gave me a perspective that I could more readily identify with and relate to them, and their experiences versus other white students on campus. Yet, I was also at the same time viewed as being a part of the "white privilege" that ABSOLUTELY is a reality on college campuses in the U.S. As someone who truly values diversity and inclusion, I often get frustrated and angry at white people and their inability and unwillingness to cross boundaries and be friendly with people who are different from them. It really bothers me.

Martial arts was probably the only reason I got through my undergraduate and probably a big part of me dropping my graduate program when I no longer had time for it. It was such an amazing support group. All sorts of people of all different races, backgrounds, beliefs, disabilities, etc. A bunch of beautiful oddballs... but you'd never find such a respectful and kind group of people

My daughter and I have been watching college dorm room tour YT videos for inspiration (she's in 8th grade) but end up triggered by all the white privilege. We specifically searched out the poor student experience and came across this video. Thank you so much for doing this. My daughter just might follow in the footsteps of her older sister and be a welder! Of course, we could get into a whole host of gender, race, and class bias in trade schools, apprenticeships, etc.
