UN Security Council reform: Members call for changes to veto powers

As the UN General Assembly convenes, many members are again calling for changes to the Security Council.
In particular, there are questions about the veto granted to the five permanent members: the UK, the US, Russia, China and France.
Critics say the veto has been used to protect allies, as well as to prevent or stall UN peacekeeping.
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna reports from the UN.

No it’s not since all those voting on the council are not democracies. In effect the change would allow one person in a dictatorship to have the same power as 300 million citizens of a democracy.

@@AWalkOnDirtthat’s not the metric to follow. If you’re part of the UN, then you have a right to vote. You don’t deny a fellow citizen their right to vote, just because you don’t like or agree with how they run their household. It’s really non of your business.

@@eros727 not how it works. Individuals through democracies have the freedom to direct their government. It makes the government responsible for the wellbeing of its citizens. That’s why democracies are so good because people are generally good. An authoritarian dictatorship, that’s primarily concerned with a few citizens, should never have any control over free citizens in a free democracy. Not going to happen. For example Putin should not have any power over free American citizens.

@@AWalkOnDirt and I repeat, if you’re a UN member then you are a citizen of that body. The democracy is the UN. If the UN body wishes to kick out a “dictatorship” then as democracies go, they can vote on it. Your subjective view on what’s “good” is irrelevant. A democracy is operated by the rule of majority, and UN members are the citizens of that body. It’s really not that complicated, and a handful of nations with veto powers that negate majority rule is by definition undemocratic.

And she is criticising them although the US did the exact same thing in Iraq. Invaded a country and violated their sovereignty. I propose we have the following: Every continent should have 3 members that have veto powers. Veto should only be applicable when 2 members from each continent from the veto powers vote in support of or against a veto only in a situation where less than 60% of the general assembly votes in favor of a bill. If the GA votes 60% in favor or against anything, veto goes to the trash can. Simple and easy!

To have more members in the council will change nothing if one vote/ veto can overrule the majority. Malaysia made a good suggestion that you need two or three vetos from the permanent members and some from the not.permanent members and that you can´t veto grave crimes like war crimes, crimes against humanity and geno.cide and you can´t veto if your the accused. Although preferably they want the veto power gone too.
